I feel this was the best explained of all the instruments. Well done. I learned so much. I'm transitioning from woodwind to brass, playing trumpet for a month now. It's such an amazing instrument.
I've played brass for a long time and knew most of what was said here but I never get tired of videos like this, I love when talented people talk about their craft and share knowledge. Nicely done.
I've been playing trumpet for 7 years. Its pretty much the best instrument I have been played. Edit. I’m now in my 11th year playing trumpet. I’m now experiencing with all different trumpets. Picked up the C Trumpet a while back and hoping to learn all of them soon.
I had no idea I could be so passionate about an instrument. Never mind that, a brass instrument! :P Mr. Mackie's excitement with the trumpet is obvious.
Former trumpet player here. This instrument was very triumphant at its times. Nothing quite like it. The thing always generated a large ego influence sphere and always gained everyone's respect. If you want an instrument , this is the one.
I am amazed at the professionalism of these presenters. And the information is always top notch. Makes me appreciate a lot more what goes through the orchestra, which is already extraordinary in itself.
Thanks to Alistair Mackie for giving such a condensed but complete summary of the trumpet. I am a player in my 70s so I know just how good this clip is.
I love how the Philharmonia Orchestra is so close to the public. You inspire many people in to the wonderful world of classical music. Mr. Makie transmits so much passion. Thanks!! ❤️❤️(I will always come back to your videos and app)
These videos are hugely helpful. As a music major early in his journey aspiring to write and teach, these videos are really helping me to better understand the instruments of an orchestra that I never knew very well before. The only thing better than these videos would be to personally know people who play all the instruments of an orchestra.

I'm here 10 years late, and I thank you for keeping this up! I have never been as fascinated by trumpet in my life! Thank you Mr.Mackie and the Philharmonia Orchestra
Fantastic video!! I've been playing trumpet for 13 years and even I learnt something new. I love your series and I think it does a great job in inspiring people into music. :)
I am a musician but I've only ever played a single note on the trumpet and this guy just taught me enough to teach myself how to play. Wonderful explanation.
This one is the most beautiful explanation about instrument. Why the other don’t do like him. He takes about the difficulty and challenges of the instrument and the possibility of the instrument
hi sir I am in a orchestra you say you just started playing the trumpet I can give you some lessons my name is fredrick I played the trumpet for a decade. thanks fredrick, best
I used to play the trumpet when I was in 6th grade, before I switched to the baritone horn in 7th grade, and played the baritone horn in tandem with the tuba when I was in 8th grade. Thenn I started playing the tuba full time in high school, although when I was in 11th grade, I had 2 band classes, and I played the tuba in the first band class, Symphonic Band, and then played the euphonium in the second band class, Wind Ensamble.
As a classical pianist, classical trumpeter, and jazz trumpeter, I find that pianists, cellists, and violinists tend to get all the glory as the main solo instruments, there's not nearly as many trumpet concertos as there are cello, violin, or piano. Its a shame, the trumpet truly is a great solo instrument and should get more spotlight.
I don't play an instrument, but I found this video very interesting as an insight into what's going on when someone plays a a brass instrument. Thanks.
Going to learn how to play the trumpet in the new year so found this and the rest of the series fascinating. At the moment I can't read any music or at any instrument but have fallen in love with the trumpet, tuba and horn from watching these videos so hope to gradually learn them all
I am in the band at my school and I play the flute. Because of this video I am going to find a way that I could play both the flute and the trumpet because those were the two I was deciding between when I was choosing but I chose flute. Thanks for the video!!
Based on the fact you said deciding between I am assuming you have only played for a year or two, and I think it would be best to pick one to focus on more intently if you ever become slightly serious. I play trombone in my high schools top jazz band, and I practice about an hour a night, and I still always try being way better and think I have a VERY long way to go to become really good, which I honestly do.So I suggest, for at least a few years, just focus on one instrument and get pretty good on that instead of being mediocre on two instruments (unless you invest A LOT of time). But if you are interested in playing jazz, trumpet is a great choice, I trying to learn trumpet right now actually. So I suggest you pick one and stick with it for awhile before stemming off (unless you plan on spending a lot of time practicing, which is what I did to learn trombone(seven years) and drums (4 years), but it's your call, practice hard!
I think it would be great to have a video dedicated to the piccolo trumpet. Maybe even the bass trumpet too! I would like to learn more about both of those instruments. As a composer, I am constantly absorbing information on different instruments so that when the time comes I will be able to compose for them effectively. These videos work wonders, and have provided me with a lot of valuable information.
Getting back to playing trumpet after not playing for years makes you see how much muscle strength is needed in the embouchure to sustain high notes and having enough endurance to last long enough.
This video made me nostalgic about playing trumpet. More and more often I think about starting practicing again, it's just so awesome. Thanks for a great vid, incredibly informative and well explained!
We don't always use circular breathing, but when we do, it's really effective. Jokes aside, I've always been fascinated by brass intruments, and the Philharmonia Orchestra's Instrument introductions are a big help.
What my brass instructor always tells me is that the pitch that you buzz and what your embouchure is like comes first. Valves exist for the purpose of changing the length of tubes to resonate with that buzz but if the initial buzz is not good, you’re not gonna have a good time.
I compose my brass and percussion works with Trumpets in C. Most composers prefer Trumpets in B-flat. If I want a B-flat brass instrument I will choose a cornet, which sounds a major second lower than written.
I play the trumpet and bass clarinet and they are amazing instruments I want to play the bassoon one day it is my dream instrument but they're so freaking expensive

Why do you think it was done in one take?
you have to channel your inner jet engine to play trumpet well. Lots of air.

So does brass consist mostly of lip work? I'm a sax and piano player and I cannot comprehend not having a key for every note...
Yes, it mainly consists of loosening and tightening your lips and using valves, slides, etc.
