- Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong reviewed by Gabriel Moss on PC. Also available on Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. Narration by Ryan McCaffrey.
Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong constantly threatens to be a competent detective RPG, and it might've succeeded if not for the fact that it tirelessly gets in its own way. Its premise is interesting, but its heroes and villains are bland, and as a result, the lukewarm story takes far too long to rev up to its maximum potential. By the time you finally become decently invested in its three playable characters and their individual quests for survival in the politically-charged vampire underworld, Swansong has already reached its finale. It might fare better on a second playthrough since even its most brutally obtuse puzzles are only difficult to bypass once and you'll have some idea of which skills you should specialize in on a given level; then it's all about getting to see those alternative paths that you could've taken the first time around. But it takes such a level of patience to get there in the first place that it might just be too much to ask from any mere mortal.

They are so harsh on developers that are indie but give leeway to games that are always the same . They thought Vampyr was eh and that was a great underrated gem to me .
Money 🤑 is why .
if an AAA studio charges the same as an indie dev then the indie dev is competing against the AAA studio. It is their job to make sure their game is worth whatever price they set it at. It doesn't matter what resources the devs had. It matters what the value of their end product is.
If a game is bad it's bad, it doesn't matter who makes it

And Redemption, redemption deserves a lot more recognition. Gamepkay wise not the greatest, still a whole lot of fun, AMAZING music and an amazing story.

The animations and facial expressions in this game looks pretty bad.
It seems like they had the very correct thought that a Disco Elysium style approach to a game like VtM has the potential to be amazing, but then couldn't or wouldn't put in the time and effort required to pull something like that off

...if it had the indie approach this game would be praised thoug. Some always find reasons to complain about anything
Now you made me think of a VtM game with the depth, writing, and effort of Disco Elysium, and I'm sad that doesn't exist...
Bloodlines is still the best RPG vampire game.
Although, Legacy Of Kain and Soul Reaver were awesome as well.

Bloodlines is one of my favorite games so this really breaks my heart. Swansong seems to lack that same action-packed combat system and skulking and prowling open-worldness that Bloodlines had.
Redemption was also a great game! Guess Ill Watch the tv series again, instead :-)

The criticisms at the beginning of the video are more about the lore of the source material than the game. Vampire the rpg wasn't invested in combat as much as it's cousin, werewolf.
True and if you're not familiar with the lore of the source material some of the terms like Code Red, and Final Death will leave you confused,

When Vampyr is more of a Vampire the Masquerade sequel than the actual sequel.
Swansong isn't Bloodlines sequel, if that were the cause any number of the other VtM guess the Battle Royal is also a sequel, what about the werewolves games that take place in the same universe are they sequels?

Huh. Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines came out way back in 2004, but it's facial animations and lip syncing during dialogue look a lot better than they do in this game.

The game's definitely catered to fans of the World of Darkness, specifically VTM. And that's why the jargons aren't explained very much, which is not a huge issue, as they expect you to have at least played Bloodlines, where you play as a fledgling and you learn what most of these terms means. I'm more disappointed about the graphics and clunky animations, man it's 2022, and they out here making a game that looks like an Xbox 360 exclusive. I'm real worried about Bloodlines 2 now, even though it's most likely already in development hell.
not same dev team that made bloodlines, this game is made by Big Bad Wolf Studio, not Paradox Interactive. :)

Reviewers always state that Telltale were the first or the trailblazers of the linear narrative style of gameplay. Quantic Dream had been doing it for years prior to telltale and were also successful.
But they also had odd twists that weren't set up properly. Telltale leans more into player agency and quality consistency till the game is over.

I'm skipping this one. It's going to be difficult to sell me a $50 game in 2022 that uses 2007 era mouth/lip animations for talking, especially when so much of the game is dedicated to looking at their stiff faces talking. LA Noire did better and it's a decade old. Hell, Mass Effect Andromeda did it better with just software (so don't tell me MoCap was the issue here) and that game was trashed for how bad it was. I'd still play a game like this but not for $50. It's just one of those things that in totality tells me something about the quality of your game

Wow this game looks so horrible it’s comical. It’s like they tried to make the worst game possible on purpose.
Really like the lore and the graphics wish they went down a more vampyr like path with combat and powers
World of Darkness has gone down hill. They have a discord server about new games and releases and supposedly help with people organizing for the table top but the discord is no joke full of Communist political ideologues and World of Darkness mods pretty much do nothing to address it. They also released some of the most convoluted rule books to a game possible with v5 where finding the rules is basically an easter egg hunt. There are literal fan made pdfs that are sold just to tell you what page of a book the rules are in. They’re killing the IP it’s sad.
Man, they probably were planning on releasing all these VTM games after Bloodlines 2 to ride on the coattails of the hype, but alas that game seems to be stuck in limbo so these guys have to release their games to an audience who are hankering for the action RPG experience and are subsequently disappointed time and time again.

The character models have the stiff plastic look of mannequins, it's disturbing.
It's supposed to be disturbedinf the game is set in a World called the World of Darkness

How many levels (or scenes, as you will) are there in this game?
5 chaptres, but you will go through some with 3 characters who will go in different places, learning story from different angle so... 10+ :D
Less then 15 since some scenes are same for all 3 characters (with different dialogues of course, but the map is same).

Development hell, basically. Was supposed to be out in 2020, then got delayed till 2021, then delayed again till 2022 after Hardsuit Labs was taken off the development of the project. No idea what's happening now.

Yes VTM bloodlines 2 did get announced however it is in developer hell currently as we'll this game was mad by a different developer tame then the one working on vrm bloodlines 2 as well this game has nothing to do with VTM bloodlines 1 and 2

Seems weird to judge this game based on the lore of wod as a whole. And people who have no idea what wod is probably aren't going to buy this on a wim anyway.
Exactly that was one of the main problems WtA: Earthblood had if you're not familiar with the lore you're going to whine about the plot, and terminology used and say it's a confusing mess because you literally have no idea about what's going on, but if you're a WoD fan and the various TTRPGs in the setting which there are a lot of you'll have no issue following the plot and easily recognize the terminology used.
People that say the story is too long just have a short attention span

Swanson? Bloodhunt? Bloodlines? I'm so confused are all of these coming out around the same time? What's the difference between all of them
Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines 1 is an RPG from 2004 and it is arguably the best vampire game of all time and also one of the best RPGs of all time. VtMB - Swanson is an adventure game with morality and choices but without rpg elements, the open-world or combat. VtMB Bloodhunt is just an online battle arena. The only one that is worth it is Bloodlines. It was a cult classic and a sequel is expected this or the next year, and it looks fuckin' awesome!

The animation is amazingly bad. Look at it. It's glorious.
So the review says you need to approach the game with the correct expectations or you end up like the uninterested and uninvested host, confused by game universe specific jargon, left with text that you need to like to read (because reading is meh, esp. in a text-based RPG, right?) and multiple choice RPG without combat and an RPG that provides replayability because you can't 100% it on the first run because the choices you do matters.
Maybe reading the synopsis helps, but then again.... reading. Yak. Right?
The problem is that the games competition currently has all of those features and more, and I’ve done them all better.
So if this game existed in a bubble by itself, we are sure it would be fantastic.
Looks like the first overhyped flop of 2022. Saw the metacritic reviews and it was without its faults: terrible glitches, characters were wooden, generic voice acting. This game should’ve been better if it weren’t for the development issues like a toxic workplace environment that led to the director quit the company.

Nothing against the voice actors but the dialogue is so awful in this game. None of the characters are convincing even in the slightest. The game isn't even visually appealing. Definitely disappointed. Not worth $60
