Good question. Define true country? I'd say he's way up there along with Willie, Hank, Johnnie, and Jones. All different but all country. He definitely embodies the rougher, earthy and honest side. For good or bad.
Man.. if he's not the greatest country singer.. he is easily without trying the coolest sumbitch to ever walk the earth.. that just happened to wanna sing 😉
He earned the title of "Outlaw" by bucking the traditional Nashville establishment, and doing things his own way. And he didn't give a damn who liked it and who didn't.
Waylon is a huge hero. Some may think he was just a musician with a deep voice, but he was so much more. One of the most important figures in country music in XX century. Absolute legend and a good role model for all other musicians that came after him. Seemed like such a great and humble man also.
It's not only Waylon's voice, but the steel guitar and drums keep coming at you like a locomotive. That deliberately loud, fast-paced drum sound always set their sound apart. Hard to beat.
This band is in the pocket constantly. And yeah even Waylon stays in awe of how good their band is. Shows the commitment on each musicians behalf. Just discovered these live performances and way better than the studio versions
Can honestly say that Waylons version made me a believer in him and have been hooked since ...Sings with such clarity , not a stumblin word .. Hear him sing a song and you know the words .Always will think of him as the finest country voice ever ..
Great point except I truly have a hard time calling today's stuff country. I don't want to "slag" the new guys as Waylon was also criticized for not being "true country" but to me the new stuff is just pop music with country clichés. Waylon was a country singer who sang about all sorts of stuff but the lyrics were real and raw. I personally cannot connect to the new stuff. It's well sung, produced, and performed but something is missing......soul.
The music, the voice, the songs, the huge number of songs, & the way he made them special...this works to make him just about the greatest country singer ever.
Waylon is my "go to therapy" every single day. He just makes every day better. I never get tired of his voice magic. He can sing anything and it sounds great, every mood known to man he has covered. So great!
I am thankful to the Lord above I grew up learning guitar in the mid seventies- I cut my teeth on Waylon and Skynyrd... At 56 I'm still in a band, playing this music ,in rural beer joints.... to a new generation . No greater decade for music than the 70's in my book..
Here I am, a swedish guy who learned from his grandfather who listened to german radio playing country music during the 40’s and after that he never stopped. His favourite was Waylon, and after he died I started listening to his music, and that’s why I’ll always carry my grandfather with me. Also, Waylon is the eternal definition of cool.
He looked pretty miserable at the start of the song (one of my favs for sure) and speaking from experience, he likely was. He hiked it up a bit and gave a few smiles but you can still see the lack of sleep deagging on him.. im so glad he got some years of peace. 💜RIP Waylon
there are so many reasons why Waylon was great but for me it always comes down to that voice. Instantly recognized, and always full of sincerity and gravitas. You know that it's a "man" singing, not some "tween". The guy was an Outlaw only because the media labled him one. He was just doing it his way. By all accounts he was kind, funny, and articulate..... doesn't me you could screw with him( or his music)

He was what is no longer politically correct. Anything he sings is heart felt, he was one.of the highway men. These were men who were labeled outlaw because their originating time frame was mainly gospel or folk (bluegrass). Waylon was an artist who cared what he had to say and was berated for it. He will always be one of the legends that times nor people can ignore. Remember your roots and where your music comes from. Today's crap does hold at least a thread in yesterdays, these kids and adults have heard this. It's not like today's favorite musician drew inspiration from his rear end.
Met him only once, at Stubbs BBQ in Lubbock TX probably 1974 or so. Stubbs was a small joint on the east side of town, gone now I'm told. Yes he was kind, and articulate... not a snob just a guy doing music. He wasn't there to perform (at Stubbs) just having supper
