I was at that recital (St John's Smith Square). He also played several Scarlatti Sonatas with Reflets dans l'eau as an encore.

I think Gilels' tone got increasingly harsh and "bangy" as he got older, especially in loud passages. I'm of the school of "pulling" the music out of the piano so that one NEVER makes harsh sound, and I am not an idolator who thinks every single note played by an icon is perfect.

Yet you must admit that Maestro Gilels' fame greatly outshines yours. Hoomeyow!!

@@extrasalt4595 Gilels wasn't a voice coach for famous Opera singers. Is "fame" is your ultimate criteria for a person's excellence? I'm sorry for you.

This the reason why british school is not so good as russian. You try to "pull" sound instead of play music.

Just try to listen "reflects dans l'eau" debussy, played by Gilels and you will be surprised. Also, some pieces are passionate, and some are lyric, so you can play them differently.

@@andreyi3233 Josef and Rosina Lhevinne taught their students to pull the music out of the instrument, and every great pianist does just that.

The piano is out of tune in the bass.
