@@TheQuantifiedScientist I watched all your Apple Watch videos thus far. Seems you’re leaning towards the sleep cycle app for its sleep identifiers. However, it’s validity for its alarm system might be slightly askew. Would you recommend disarming the alarm and allowing yourself to wake up naturally if possible? I tried Pillow, AutoSleep, Sleep Cycle, and Sleep++. None were as accurate or user friendly as my Fitbit Charge sleep tracking . Wish Apple would come out with a full featured native sleep tracking app since the Apple Watch sensors and hardware is top notch.

I really like that you suggested "if you liked my video, please give it a thumbs up because it makes it so other people find my videos easier." I've been on RUclips since the beginning, and you're the first person I've seen who broke it down that /that's/ the reason why we should "thumbs up" the video. I've know that's why, but you tied it in with "it makes it so other people find my videos easier [and if you liked it, then maybe they would too]." That was really cool. Very authentic. Thank you for being the first person I've seen to do that. & I never subscribe just because a RUclipsr tells me to. But you won me over, man. How you said it was truly authentic. I didn't feel pressured (which is why I never subscribe). This is the first video on your channel that I've seen. Really proud of you. I liked, subscribed, and left a comment. Go you, man.

I've got sleep apnea and I'm not really convinced with smartwatches for sleep analysis. The question is if a device at your wrists will ever be able to actually detect REM-sleep instead of estimating/calculating it. A camera or sleep-mat probably got better results in detecting movement. Also in my comparision a better finger-pulsoxymeter has way better results in spo2 and puls measurment than my smartwatch. There are some watch-like spo2 devices with finger sensors, especially for night-application with nice data exporting features.
But of course I do understand that most users will prefer one single device with easy output just for the basics and the future could bring more. There are rumors which say the next Apple Watch can meassure blood sugar throught the skin which I never thought would be possible. Could be a game changer in that aspect. So there might come way more interesting stuff until we got internal nano chip sensors in our blood which will open completly new worlds^^
Nice video as always. Maybe you should mention the version of the apps while you are testing them. Stuff can change with every update obvs.

Yeah, I was just wondering if you have done this same comparison with the Fitbit sleep tracking. I've really been wanting an Apple watch but my Fitbit sleep tracking is something that is very important to me these days. Apples sleep tracking seems to fall very short of the data I've grown accustomed to:) Now you have me wondering just how accurate the Fitbit really tracks my stages of sleep as well as the other data like restless sleep etc...

I went from an older model Fitbit to an Apple Watch, using the Pillow app, but I think the Fitbit sleep tracking is superior. My results are quite different between the devices and correspond with the results discussed in this video - particularly REM stages. I love my Apple Watch but am disappointed in this aspect of it.

Maybe you could also do a table in which you compare the watch and the eeg normalizing on the rows, and not on the coloumns: like to say “if the watch says it was a light sleep what are the chances that it actually were light sleep, a deep sleep, rem phase or awake?”

Thank you for these reviews. But in regards to the Apple Watch apps, aren't you overlooking a more fundamental issue: namely that the Apple Watch sensors are simply not good enough to detect a difference between REM sleep and AWAKE stages? In that case, it doesn't matter what app one uses on the watch.

    • @craigackroyd

I think unless you have a sensor strapped to your head with infrared cameras recording all the time, you will never really know how good your sleep was. I think sleep tracking is so complicated and smart watches just don’t have the technology to accurately record.

Is there a feature to say wake you up after you have sleep enough? say for someone like a musician that is flexible to wake up whenever they’re like but can be in bed late & could sleep too much if not woke ?

I like rigorous scientific methods to assess sport devices, this was one of the reasons I subscribed to your channel, I however find your methodology to be shallow and lacking accuracy, I would have thought many recordings would have been necessary in order to assess accuracy, room temperature, vigorous physical exercise, alcohol and drug intake, many variables can influence blood flow which is what the watch measures or should I say attempt to measure in the case of this so called fitness watch from Apple.

Hy Wyoming, thanks for the feedback. So I think more tests are always better, but if I did that I could only test one or two devices. From experience I think I test enough nights to the point where I feel that new nights do not add so much more information. Its a balance, and I am happy with where it is now. Have a great day 😊

Great review! This is really outstanding work!
Just a minor note: Pillow's documentation claims that their app needs a lot of data before it can give "accurate" sleep stats. So, if they're to be trusted, I'd only do a review after gathering at least a couple weeks of data.

sadly this isn't something he's taken into account, even in his more recent videos. god knows why, he spent a lot of time testing for it to all be ruined or at least not nearly trustworthy enough for people like me who are trying to decide what sleep app to get. Guess I'll go with the best priced option, Autosleep. Wish he went the extra mile to stabilize testing conditions, it's a big shame that all this work can't be trusted to make an informed decision bc nobody else has done testing like this.

@@avgvstvs96 The reviewer said that Sleep Cycle is probably the best of the Apple Watch apps. The results were pretty outstanding, although I still want to know more about the Pillow app's longterm accuracy.
