I really love the newer format you’ve been rocking. The little bits of media help ground these games as cultural artifacts that didn’t exist in a vacuum.
H.E.R.O. did also get a release on MSX cartridge in Japan, based on the European cassette release. It's a pretty great version of the game, too -- identical to the Colecovision port, which is almost indisputably the best-looking port of them all.
Okay, Champion Hockey, for some reason, reminds me of those table/rod hockey sets with the little figures controlled by turning and sliding rods in the table. In other words, it looks like a ridiculous good time.
You tell me there’s Lode Runner fatigue setting in and I absolutely believe you. This felt like Summer 2014 all over again, when Derek Buck of Classic Game Room fame, got conscripted to review How To Train Your Dragon 2… for EACH CONSOLE IT RELEASED ON. (That’s five, for those keeping track at home: PS3, 360, 3DS, Wii U and even the Wii.) Difference is: Lode Runner is actually a good game, and HTTYD2 is anything but. Also: Nice Dirty Pair eye catch. I need to get the DVDs someday.
.iirc you could destroy barriers in H.E.R.O. with your laser if you stand there for 10 seconds or so constantly firing at the barrier....at least you could in the 2600 version. I think this was done in a "just in case you use up all your dynamite and can't proceed" scenario.
Yup you could do that on the c64 version too. The wall would change graphic to smaller blocks half way thru your blasting and then disappear at the end.
Aah, sounds like my childhood... my school had a BBC Micro, and the ultimate in fun was sneaking in to play Granny's Garden (The British Oregon Trail) or Doctor Who and the Mines of Terror on it.
Granny's Garden is a huge nostalgia trip from my childhood, and getting to create cool interpolated art on the "new computer" (which was an Archimedes)
Always glad to see a new upload Jeremy. Hope this finds you well and wish you a Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays. Thanks for the work you create and share with the world.
H.E.R.O. was my favorite Apple II game back in the day. I'm still fond of it. Glad to hear the SG1000 version was good! And speaking of chaotic ice hockey, one day you'll discover the joys of the Kunio-Kun hockey game, if you haven't already. It's utter madness.
I loved H.E.R.O. on the Commodore 64. Something about that game made it super addictive to my 7 year old brain. Also - multiple Queen references. The Killer Queen one was especially good. Well done, Jeremy. Very well done.
"The enemies are observing Castle Doctrine" is gonna stick with me forever, I think. Are we not the aggressors? Are we not the instigators of violence? I didn't expect a crisis of video game faith after the (excellent!) Killer Queen line. Thanks Jeremy.
Love these older Lode Runner versions that fit on a single screen even if the graphics are lacking. One of the best examples where newer versions of a game aren’t better versions of the game.
I had a review on Glitchwave for Champion Ice Hockey once that went "The music is really cute! The ice-sliding physics are surprisingly good, too. Grab a buddy and play together." I only rated it 2.5/5.0. I suppose I might want to re-evaluate it after this.
Wait a minute... This episode brought up a good point. Hockey video games almost never employ ice physics with inertia, sliding and being bounced around... and yet, they probably should.
9:12 That one green and yellow hockey player on the cover has a face that makes it look like he got kneed in the balls . . . by the invisible man? Oh well, at least the game is decent.
I also played a lot of Lode Runner in school. I didn't have the game at home though, instead I got a weird sequel-in-name-only called Lode Runner's Rescue from Synapse, an isometric action game which is sort of like Alice in Wonderland meets Crystal Castles. As for Lode Runner, we were sufficiently addicted to it that, much later, when Battle Lode Runner for PC Engine/TG16 was released on Wii Virtual Console, we actually got a lot of play out of it, almost clearing all of its levels (in the end we got stuck on one of the final stages of the whole game).
Championship Lode Runner - That wasn't the only way to collect the two boxes in the middle. You could also coax the guards into falling on them and they would likely grab them on the way down. You then dig down the side wall, luring the guard to you and trp him in a hole to make him give up the box. It's a little more work, but safer. H.E.R.O. - A good rule of thumb: If there are two paths and one is behind a wall, that's the path you should be going down.
Even if you're not normally a fan, somehow it seems like ice hockey games always end up being a fun time for you: NES Ice Hockey, Blades of Steel, and now Champion Ice Hockey. It's a curious coincidence.
5:37 I can't confirm it (but I suppose it is) is the same in the Sega version but (in the Atari 2600 version) your laser beams can destroy walls but you have to shoot at them for a very long time. It means you're not blocked when you run out of TNT but you will be slowed down(and time is limited).
lode runner I did play a bit on game boy, but I remember it mostly on my school's macintoshes. H.E.R.O. I probably mostly played on emulators but I think the PSX activision collection had it as well? was kind of a fun one.
I only beat the first few levels, the first time I tried to play that game. It was also my first Lode Runner experience. It kind of broke my confidence...why was I the only one struggling? And now I know. And suddenly, my humiliating defeat has become a humble brag.
Champion Ice Hockey sounds like a fun multiplayer game. Added it to the list of stuff to try next time my buddy comes over for the normal arcade/classic computer sessions we have. Looks like the kind of brainless action/sports hybrid we would both enjoy. ^-^ H.E.R.O. looks pretty fun on the ol' SG-1000 also. Thanks for the recommends!
Doctor Wolfman and Absolute Zero Now said it best before me, but the short clips of stuff and references are great. In this case, the Dirty Pair OP left me so vexed I almost had nothing to say about the actual games. But I do, HERO always seemed like fun. Championship Lode Runner is a pass for me, and it's more like Loathe Runner for you at this point. And how could you hate ice hockey? It's hockey, but actually fun!
Oh, you think Lode Runner fatigue is bad? How about Q*bert fatigue? Even before the Famicom/NES version, you had A5200, A2600, Vic-20, C64, Intellivison, Colecovision, TI99/4A, A400/600/800, dedicated handheld, SG-1000, DOS, _and_ the Arcade Original.
Sad that the 1000 version of Hero looks mostly awful compared to the Colecovision version, the definitive port of that game. You would think they would have just done a quick port. Oh well. I still paid around 50 for it boxed on the CV last year. 2 button control beats the otherwise as good looking n playing C64 version. (Plus I have a modded NES style pad and a db9 splitter for those games that need the keypad. The OEM CV controller is.. not very good.)
I really love the newer format you’ve been rocking. The little bits of media help ground these games as cultural artifacts that didn’t exist in a vacuum.
That Killer Queen moment, that is writing worthy of an award.
Dirty Pair eyecatch, Killer Queen lyrics, kaizo Lode Runner, this episode has it all. And a good sports game too! Segaiden delivers as always!
H.E.R.O. did also get a release on MSX cartridge in Japan, based on the European cassette release. It's a pretty great version of the game, too -- identical to the Colecovision port, which is almost indisputably the best-looking port of them all.
Just had a look and the Coleco one is virtually identical to the c64 version. I think the c64 one had better sound for the rotors though.
Lode Runner and HERO were the two games I always wanted to play on my half-sister's Atari 800XL when I was a kid. Good stuff.
Okay, Champion Hockey, for some reason, reminds me of those table/rod hockey sets with the little figures controlled by turning and sliding rods in the table.
In other words, it looks like a ridiculous good time.

You can laser through the walls in H.E.R.O., but it takes time and energy.
.iirc you could destroy barriers in H.E.R.O. with your laser if you stand there for 10 seconds or so constantly firing at the barrier....at least you could in the 2600 version. I think this was done in a "just in case you use up all your dynamite and can't proceed" scenario.

For the Sega version H.E.R.O. could stand for Hoverjet Emergency Rescue Operation.
H could also stand for Hunky, look at that dreamboat
Aah, sounds like my childhood... my school had a BBC Micro, and the ultimate in fun was sneaking in to play Granny's Garden (The British Oregon Trail) or Doctor Who and the Mines of Terror on it.

@@tolindaniel "Do you want the witch to eat you?"
Yes
"Don't be silly".
The nuts are hurting you.
It's nice of you to spend all this time digitizing these 90s game reviews and adding modern screencapture footage. :D
Love the channel Jeremy, thanks for all the entertainment over the year. Merry Christmas and/or happy holidays to you and yours!
Always glad to see a new upload Jeremy. Hope this finds you well and wish you a Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays. Thanks for the work you create and share with the world.
I have done nothing but practice Lode Runner for three days.
This version of HERO looks quite good!
H.E.R.O. was my favorite Apple II game back in the day. I'm still fond of it. Glad to hear the SG1000 version was good!

I tried for Fat Bottomed Girls too but no go
A good video to start off winter break with, lookin forward to more in the future!

5:42. Jeremy, my hat’s off to you. That may be one of the dryly funniest lines I’ve ever heard in a game review. Bravo.
Love these older Lode Runner versions that fit on a single screen even if the graphics are lacking. One of the best examples where newer versions of a game aren’t better versions of the game.

Love the Dirty Pair at the beginning
Wait a minute... This episode brought up a good point. Hockey video games almost never employ ice physics with inertia, sliding and being bounced around... and yet, they probably should.
Props for sneaking the word "churlish" into a RUclips video in the year 2021!
Always love watching your reviews. The effort you put into them shows and you always present them in a great way.
9:12 That one green and yellow hockey player on the cover has a face that makes it look like he got kneed in the balls . . . by the invisible man? Oh well, at least the game is decent.

I used to play the hell outta H.E.R.O on the 2600 back in the day. The SG 1000 version looks great, I’ll definitely give it a go!
lode runner I did play a bit on game boy, but I remember it mostly on my school's macintoshes. H.E.R.O. I probably mostly played on emulators but I think the PSX activision collection had it as well? was kind of a fun one.
I almost completed a Championship Lode Runner level once.
Once.
I only beat the first few levels, the first time I tried to play that game.
It was also my first Lode Runner experience. It kind of broke my confidence...why was I the only one struggling?
And now I know. And suddenly, my humiliating defeat has become a humble brag.

SG1000 Hero is fantastic! It's up there with Hustle Chummy in terms of memorable playformers
Doctor Wolfman and Absolute Zero Now said it best before me, but the short clips of stuff and references
are great. In this case, the Dirty Pair OP left me so vexed I almost had nothing to say about the actual games.
But I do, HERO always seemed like fun. Championship Lode Runner is a pass for me, and it's more like
Loathe Runner for you at this point. And how could you hate ice hockey? It's hockey, but actually fun!
Are you going to cover the whole Master System library like you are doimg with the NES? It would be nice, even if it will take ages...
The U.S. library, but not quite in the same depth as NES
am I the only one wondering why the mine shafts in H.E.R.O. are packed with curling rocks?
Haha, I like the castle doctrine joke. Stand yer ground, bats and spiders!
EDIT: Misspelled "yer."
Doesn't using your beam lower your power meter?
I don't know about Ice Hockey, but Hovercraft Bumper Polo seems like it would make for an interesting spectacle.
All praise the Lovely Angles.
All blame the Dirty Pair.
Yes but when will you review Video Olympics for the Atari 2600?
Finally H.E.R.O. I have something to look forward to after work
H.E.R.O. always felt like a top tier arcade game trapped in a cartridge.
Glad you were able to enjoy yourself with a sports game for once
'DIRTY PAIR'! AWESOME!
Dirty Pair!! 😍
kudos on the queen reference
Boy Championship Loderunner for SG and Fami ramp up the difficulty to the MAX. I don't think I'll ever be good at either of these releases.
Great video, but Ice hockey rules!
great queen reference.
Sega should have released those three games in the first place. 😀👍🎮
Your making me really want an sg1000 😁
All right-thinking people should want an SG-1000!
Getting tired of Lode Runner? Sounds like you need a game you haven't played before, like Soukoban.
"Hilarious and infuriating fun for two people..."
THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID
