Regarding shooters in the Commando vein that preceded Ninja Princess, I was thinking that Taito's Front Line, which was a 1982 release, came out before Dough Boy. Of course, there might still be some earlier run 'n' gun that I've never heard of that beat both of those to the punch...
I adore Ninja Princess and was surprised to find the SMS version superior to the arcade original (which I played through on the Saturn Sega Memorial volume 2 compilation).
I've got those too. Mostly for Up n Down which I think I like the Commodore 64 (and to a much lesser degree the Atari 800 port) version better. Sometimes home ports of arcade games lose the technical chops but gain playability in not trying to eat kids' money.
I've been angry at The Ninja not being a straight port of Ninja Princess since I discovered the arcade game. The Ninja was still a pretty good game on the Master System though.
Ninja Princes did get a near arcade perfect port for the Japanese Saturn on the Sega Ages Memorial selection Vol 2. Also featured near perfect ports of Star Jacker and Monaco GP, as well as the arcade Doki Doki Penguin Land (which is damn near identical to the SG1000 version).
Ninja Princess is, hands down, my favourite SG-1000 game. Incredible title, with some flaws sure, but still playable and enjoyable nowdays.... What a game!
I remember playing the arcade version of Ninja Princess at some store in Pennsylvania back in the 2000s. (It was called Sega Ninja, but the protagonist was still a princess).
Looking forward to seeing the Ninja on the Master System. Definitely potential for Wonder Boy on SG-1000 and it's more graphically impressive brother Adventure Island for the NES back to back.
Also! Super Tank is a kinda-sorta-port of Heavy Metal, a really cool and rare future robotank shooter with very similar play mechanics. Rarely seen in our out of arcades, it never ever had a proper home conversion.
Considering historical ninja would want everyone to lower their guard, and all the ninjas in black are referencing a meta joke from Japanese theater? (The black was what the stagehands wore so you didn't see them manipulate the stage props. Making one of them the ninja was a great visual gag.) I'd say we should all respect Sega's dedication to historical accuracy. All that's missing is a giant enemy crab or two. Besides, I don't see Wonder Boy or Flicky wearing pants either. And speaking of Flicky, what's with leaving her off your tribute to Sega's girl power?
So i am watching the video really small at work, so forgive me, but is the Helicopter sprite in Super tank the special attack from the tank with a propeller and a 180 degree rotation? I have been loving our journey throught the SG 1000 libary!
There is a good home release of Ninja Princess. It's one of the many rarities on the recent Sega Astro City Mini. The English menu calls it "Sega Ninja" but it's definitely the Ninja Princess version.
Yep, Astro City Mini will be getting an episode before too long, and I'll be touching on it then. But having come out two years ago, that device is not exactly in the spirit of this discussion of vintage home releases.
This has likely been stated in the past but the graphical prowess of the sg-1k vs the mk-3/SMS is kinda similar to the Genesis vs 32x imo. My classmate's Master System was extremely impressive to me back in my early elementary school days, lol.
That quasi-flip-screen does seem very true to real life, where your view of other adjacent areas is limited until you cross into them, which then causes your view of the original area to be limited. Some 2D games actually black out areas where a sight line cannot reach, but this seems like a much more intuitive and unintrusive compromise.
Super Tank and Ninja Princess do share one other element in common: the main character has no pants. At least, I am assuming that the tank has no pants on.
The aliexpress arcade box (Linux emulation)I finally broke down and purchased has the various versions of Ninja Princess and the Ninja. Glad you hit the highs of all three versions. Sorry about the lows. Question: what was the Japanese satellite EDF game called in arcades? Wasn't it a rotary control on the arcade machine?
Are you thinking of SDI: Strategic Defense Initiative? In the arcade version the player controlled the movement of a satellite with a joystick and aimed its weapons using a trackball. It was ported to the Sega Master System with a different control scheme and was re-named Global Defense in the west.
@@MarcBarkyMarta thanks Marc!! I played it on SMS when a friend loaned it to me (a really long time ago) and really craved playing it recently. Pretty interesting gameplay and the tune sorta sticks.
The Ninja on Master System is a great game, but the location of some green scrolls, required to unlock the final stage, is practically impossible to guess without a guide. Also, the Ninja looks more like a samurai than a real ninja
Definitely reminds me of Pocky & Rocky! She's cute too. I'm surprised an SG1000 game can look that good. Also lmao 2:54 at Bird Week being discussed 😂 I refuse to believe anyone has actually completed all 36 stages. That game is soooo damn hard.
Ninja Princess is my favorite SG-1000 game. The Ninja is also great, but the character replacement is really unfortunate, they should have stuck with the original lead...
@@JeremyParish As for Vietnamese, Dutch, and Korean, it is much more common for RUclips to mishear a video in English as one of those languages, and quite a lot more words show up in those subtitles. In Italian it doesn't think you're saying anything for minutes at a time, only [Musica].
For those curious: The anime at the beginning is They Were 11!
These videos are always a treat.
A nice rundown on some SG-1000 card games. Ninja princess being the highlight.
Ninja Princess did get an intact home version in the form of a SEGA Ages release for the Saturn.
Love your channel
Especially good script and delivery this time around
Probably the best Works opening line yet

Down with pants!
Up with miniskirts! Or, in this case, mini-kimono.

I'm impressed by Ninja Princess graphics for the SG-1000
Well, after seeing that two second clip of a kendo competition, I know my next RUclips rabbit hole expedition...
I was so shocked when I originally saw Ninja Princess in the arcade. At the time, I thought The Ninja was wholly original.
In Super Tank's defence, the protagonist is at least has a skirt on.
Now this makes me wish they'd done a MD/Gen port of Ninja Princess. It could have been arcade-perfect. Oh well.

Shout out for that Lensman clip there in the beginning 👍👍
Ninja Princess was on of the first SG1000 games I got. I owned it for an embarrassingly long time before I discovered the vanishing mechanic.
I guess the ninja princess starts crying when she gets hit, but it looks more like she's a chipmunk hungrily noshing on an acorn.
There is a definitive home release of Ninja Princess - please see Sega Ages Memorial Selection Vol 2 on the Japanese Saturn, it's great!

Days since the last mention of Xevious: 0

Ah yes... perfectly recreating the limited FOV one experiences in a rice paddy, a flat expanse covered by 4" high grass.
She's myopic!
Never heard of this game

the missile attack in Super Tank looks alot like the attack from Sega's Heavy Metal arcade game

Satellite 7, maybe?

Are you thinking of Sega's SDI? It had a joystick and trackball, I think. Also came to the US Master System as Global Defense.

They clearly recycled Ninja Princess for The Ninja on the Master System. PS: Ah yes, should have known you'd bring that up in the video. Kudos!

Ninja Princess on the box cover looks an awful lot like Penelope Pitstop.
That UPA vibe
There’s a more blatant inaccuracy with Ninja Princess.
Say it with me (in cadence):
🎼 Real 🎵 Ninja 🎵 Wear 🎵 Blue!
Uhhh if ninja don’t color code themselves, how can you know which attacks they’ll use?
So the Power Rangers Ninja Force stuff is all fake? What the Disney?!!
Real ninja wear whatever lets them not stand out in a crowd. Could be anything.
You know who'd make a good example of a proper ninja? Agent 47.
If Godfrey Ho ninja movies taught me anything it's that ninjas have a broad color spectrum and headbands that say "Ninja" on them.
Ninja Princess is my favorite SG-1000 game. The Ninja is also great, but the character replacement is really unfortunate, they should have stuck with the original lead...
Wait...what did you mean exactly with "commando style"...?
You may feel free to envision a pair of waggling eyebrows there if you like
Which _would_ be historically accurate for Edo-era Japan.
Ninja 🥷 princess I will play that game. 😀👍🎮
Love your videos Jeremy! Hope you do Neo Geo one day!
boy..i wonder...boy
don't you know that pants limit your power
Filing this one away as evidence for when we're inevitably called in to testify at your indecent exposure trial
I want me a ninja princess babe, duh dn duhdundunnana.
yes, Super Tank is more boring, but does it wear pants?
Vietnamese, Dutch, or Korean I can understand, but ITALIAN autosubs?
I don't know what you're talking about
@@JeremyParish RUclips thought this video was in Italian, so there are almost no captions at all.

Wait, a ninja princess who wears conspicuous red clothes and no pants...
Was this the original inspiration for 2005''s Red Ninja: Kekka no Mai?
Wow, I’d forgotten all about that one.
