My headcanon is:
Morax orchestrated faking his death, and planned it so that his Alter-Ego would organise the Rite of Parting in order for him to actually Organise it to Honour the Memory of Guizhong.
He picked the perfume preferred by old women [I Headcanon the Goddess of Dust as older than Morax], went searching for wild Glaze Lilies, and while everyone was mourning his fake death, he was mourning Guizhong according to the Old Traditions of Liyue, the way she would have Mourned him had he died.

For all we know they were the closest friends but whether Zhongli has romantic feelings for her is not revealed.Xiao said "For Our God is the God of Contracts" which means he never did anything unless he had a contract but when Guizhong asked him to protect their people he did without ever having a contract with her.Not to forget her death is what caused him to become the Warrior God who killed hundreds in the War.
