  • No matter how silly the idea of rewatching ‘The Naked Gun’ might be to Bill Simmons and Kyle Brandt, as Americans, they must be gracious and considerate podcast hosts. The guys revisit the 1988 classic ‘The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!’ starring Leslie Nielsen, Priscilla Presley, and Ricardo Montalbán.

    Best quote you guys missed.
Frank: It's the same old story; boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girl dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Day.
    Jane: Goodyear?
    Frank: No, the worst.

Solid breakdown. I know it is impossible to hit every gag in this movie, so here I my top 10 not referenced by Bill and Kyle.
    • Frank in the police station walking around the set/door in front of the camera.
    • “Sexual assault with a concrete dildo!”
    • When Frank and Jane coathanger the couple on the beach (during the Herman’s Hermits montage).
    • Ludwig: “Drebin”……..Jane: “Frank”………..Frank: “You’re both right”.
    • When Frank searches the man at the dinner and reach into Ed’s pocket. “He’s got a picture of your wife”.
    • “Do you want to take a dingy?” “No. I took care of that at the press conference.”
    • “I’m sorry, I can’t hear you. Don’t fire the gun while you’re talking”
    • When Frank tackled the Queen at the dinner and the photos in the newspaper showed several photos, including one with Frank taking the Queen from behind.
    • Ludwig: “Lieutenant”………Frank: “The feeling is mutual”
    • Jane: “Goodyear?”……….Frank: “No, the worst”

Favorite related story involving Weird Al and this movie: “The first time he ever did a cameo was The Naked Gun (1988),” Wallace writes. “Al was single then, and he took a series of first dates to the movie, not telling any of them he was in the film. When he’d show up on screen emerging from that airplane, ‘they just flipped out‘, he told me, especially when they realized he was wearing that exact same Hawaiian shirt, in two totally different realms yet at exactly the same time.”

Your podcast failed to notice that Frank's "I shoot the bastard, that's my policy" was a direct parody/homage of Clint's response to the SF mayor in the first "Dirty Harry"....only the SF mayor kinda agreed with Clint afterwards, whereas Frank was reprimanded because he shot the wrong (innocent) people!

Bill - you must have seen Leslie Nielsen in Creepshow.. as he sadistically torments a then-unknown Ted Danson. Seriously f'n scary - Leslie was originally typecast as a heavy and only Airplane! helped him find a new career... The ZAZ guys said he was the one guy who instantly got what they were going for, with no coaching. The playing it serious, which actually was the funniest way of all.

Police Squad/Naked Gun spoofs a late 50's TV cop drama called M Squad starring Lee Marvin as Lt. Frank Ballinger.
Also, Leslie Nielsen was a dramatic leading man in the 50's who starred in several films, most notably Forbidden Planet (1956) which is considered a sci-fi classic.

One of the things this film does well, and ZAZ were masters of them, is sight gags. I'm a sucker for a good sight gag but you rarely see them anymore. Comedy is to some degree generation and it feels like the sight gag is from a bygone era.

    • @75aces97
      @75aces97 3 месяца назад +1

Sight gags like theirs would still work, but the kind of comedy ZAZ made at their best is hard to do. The visuals in Airplane, Top Secret and Police Squad work so well because at first glance they look uncannily like the movie tropes they’re meant to parody. They know your expectations as an audience and then pull the rug out from under you before you can anticipate it.
This takes discipline and attention to detail. If you half ass it the joke doesn’t work. Garbage effort in, garbage results out.

It's the Rocky Marciano of comedy movies. Probably most of the fighters Marciano beat were "better" than he was, but he knocked them all out by never taking a backward step and continually throwing punches. Maybe most of the Naked Gun's jokes aren't all that funny, but they never stop coming, not for a single second; eventually you find yourself on the floor and you can't get up.

I don’t know if it’s funni*er* but it’s up there. in my book, Airplane, TS, Police Squad/Naked Gun are all part of a peak of perfect spoofing. NG 2 1/2 and Hot Shots had moments, but just weren’t as funny as their 1980s material with both Zuckers.
If the 80s material was the master class in feature film parody, sadly no one yet has gotten an A in that course.
