  • I tried 5 kinds of coffee for camping and I’ll tell you which one is the best.
I put three easy backpacking coffee-making methods to a
taste test, none requiring special equipment. I test
    brew-in-the-bag (brew-company)
    classic cowboy coffee
3 popular instant coffee brands: Medaglia d’Oro, Folgers, and Starbucks VIA
to see how they stack up on the trail.
I wrap up with my go-to recommendation for easy, great-tasting coffee in the backcountry. I’ll share my favorite option and a handy hack for packing coffee for multi-day trips.
Do you have a favorite coffee method for camping or backpacking? Share it in the comments-I’m always looking for new ideas.

We do a variation on Cowboy: Bring water to boil, take it off the heat, add the coffee, put a lid on it, cover with my beanie cap, and let it steep for 4 to 5 minutes. Pour the coffee thru a tiny fine mesh strainer. It's basically French Press. We find it much more satisfying than any of the instants including Charbucks.

Sounds much better than my messy attempt at cowboy coffee. How do you dispose of the grounds?

    • @pimacanyon6208

@@Madmotion I scatter them over a wide area. I know some people think they should carry out everything including food waste. I don't agree with that. Widely scattered coffee grounds will just go into the soil. At home, coffee grounds can be added directly to the garden without composting, although I just include them in the compost.

I agree that instant is too easy to pass up for camping ! In fact we travel so much, and take instant everywhere with us, that we've gotten in the habit of just having it at home because it takes less time from wake up to Coffee in our gullet 😂. I would have been ashamed to say that years ago, but caffeine takes priority lol.
I prefer the Starbucks as well. But not all flavors. If they sold it in bulk size we would buy that. But for home use or car camping we use the Md'oro, and mix it with Mount Hagen organic decaffeinated. It has a slightly smoother and Fuller taste. So it gives us a little more coffee flavor but not necessarily more caffeine . As an alternative, the other thing I've been liking a lot recently is the ryze mushroom coffee. It has nice earthy tones. And I usually mix it with some chai herbs for a little extra kick , a little salt, maybe a drop of stevia, plus cream and/or butter if I'm at home 😋

Several people have suggested Mount Hagen, I may need to do a round two testing video!

Nice video. As a newbie backpacker one thing I’d always like to see addressed is the issue of trash and clean-up. Maybe it’s obvious to the more experienced, but I’ve started to think more about these things as I watch these types of videos. Thanks again!

Great suggestion, it's definitely another argument for premixing instant. That way there are no wrappers or coffee grounds to dispose of on the trail.

Cowboy coffee rules. The trick to avoid boiling over is to rest a peeled stick on the pot rim. When it finishes brewing, the grounds will settle. A dash of cold water will insure that the grounds settle. To avoid using your teeth as a filter, pour carefully to avoid agitating the settled grounds.

I've been home roasting my own coffee since I was 28. Hands down, my home-roasted coffee is the best! You went as far as coffee filter, then a coffee in a bag solution that you have to carry out again. You seriously should consider the GSI Outdoors Ultralight Java maker. It has a reusable screen and you use YOUR OWN home coffee. Easily rinses off and its good to go again and again... The Aeropress with the metal espresso screen on it makes top notch extractions that make flawless Americano's. If pure espresso is your thing, Bialetti makes a single person Moka Pot, which produces a very rich cup. It's a bit heavy for ultralight backpackers, but at a few ounces, not that bad... Those are in order of my taste preference...

@@Madmotion technically you can start with a hot air popcorn popper. Look for a popcorn popper with a metal grid/ plate, not a coarse wire screen... You can even roast coffee in a cast iron pan. That said, it's easy to burn when roasting this way...

@@Madmotion Starbucks Via is just about the best instant coffee there is. I've tasted dozens of instant coffees over the years and since I prefer coffee that is almost a dark roast, but not quite, prefer Via House Blend and Columbian. Personally, I find French roast and other dark roasts too bitter and the lighter roasts just not rich enough flavor wise...
