Master Huang was a master of Fujian White Crane when he met Professor Cheng. His White Crane background influenced his Taiji.

This seems to be a common practice. Dr. Yang teaches White Crane also.

Cheng Man-Ch'ing said, "Tai Chi is 30% technical and 70% YOU." Hence the subtle changes in articulation. Yang Cheng-Fu notably changed the Yang Lu Chan form to make it more palatable to "civilians" when he gifted Yang family Tai Chi to the people of China, removing the FaJing (explosive) aspects of the form. Of course, as you say, the martial part is still in there, just taught in different ways (push hands, da lu, san shou, etc.) Yang Cheng-Fu's reinvention of the form was a genius move, and Prof. Cheng's shortened form made it easy for many more people to learn Tai Chi. The martial part was carried forward by the likes of Master Huang, William C.C. Chen (my main teacher), Ben Lo, and others, but, as time goes by, one realizes that the greatest "self defense" of Tai Chi is defense against old age and infirmity.

That is so true, I always say that Tai Chi is not going to make you live longer, but it will help you live a better life in your old age.

@@ShifuDonabsolutely right. I'm almost 65 and I'm working at my Tai Chi more than when I was 25!
My biggest mistake was taking a hiatus of 15 years from 2003 to 2018. It meant having to virtually start from scratch again.

Modern Chen Style is different from the Chen Form taught Yang Lu Chan. The Old Chen Frame looks a lot more like Yang Tai Chi.
