Fall Harvest & Cook - Acorn and Mesquite

  • Primitive tribes in the southwest of the USA and northwest of Mexico harvested an abundance of many nutritious foods during the fall months preceding winter. Acorns were a major food source in the mountains and coastal area while mesquite was more abundant in the desert regions. In this video I use primitive methods to harvest ripe acorns, mesquite and toyon fruits from native trees and show one of several methods to process the acorns and make a nutritious acorn mush or soup.

    Nice acorn mush! I've seen people grind the mesquite beans into a flour and bake little biscuits with it. I bet an awesome recipe for what you have available would be mesquite flour + acorn flour + toyon berries baked into small biscuits/loaves on a flat rock on your oven. They'd be like primitive fruitcakes, just in time for the holidays.

    4:20 what a great visual! And I also love what your doing, I once made a primitive farm of corn and also wheat. The corn failed but the wheat worked out. Then I crushed it and made some nice primitive flat styled bread. Totally natural. I added some natural honey into the dough and some crushed egg white to add flavor. Tasted noice.

    Acorn porridge. Here in Australia Acacia seeds are the closest equivalent that I can think of. Many species all over the country, most are edible but have small seeds, a commonly available food. Long/yellow yam and cycad nuts need to be leeched in running water before they are edible but cycads are highly carcinogenic and toxic even when prepared properly.A survival food in extreme times and nothing more.

    • @ChadZuberAdventures

    That's an interesting and much faster way to prepare acorns.
    I know the Indians used to put them in a river or stream for a few days to get rid of the tannins.
    Could you also make some small flat patties mixing the ground acorn with a little water? I guess so. But a hot soup would be more pleasing..

    Have you thought of making some loose weave covered baskets to put the cracked acorns into and let them leach the tannins out over a week of soaking in the water? Also a nice small food cache to keep things cool and store with a big flat rock over would be a nice investment over the years. saw the black markings on the basket. Did it get burnt being near the fire? I hope you didn't have to scrap it. it's such a cute basket.

    • @ChadZuberAdventures
      @ChadZuberAdventures  4 года назад +1

      I did that technique to leach out the tannins of whole acorns last season. I left them in the stream for a week but there was still a mild bitter taste. I need a more tightly woven basket to do the same with ground acorns. That will work well. Also need to build an acorn storage.
