Primitive Bushcraft Shelter - Stone Roofed Lean-To
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 15 сен 2024
- In this video I build a permanent lean-to with a stone roof. It was built by myself with mostly young maple trees, poplar bark, flagstone and earth, all gathered from the immediate area of the building site.
No outside materials were used and only 4 tools: a Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel, Cold Steel Spike Hawk, Svord Von Tempsky Bowie and a Svord Pig Sticker.
During the warm months I like to stay away from water to avoid insects. This was built on one of the finger ridges of the middle ridge of the property and is nice and dry.
The build took five days to complete and I stayed out there during that time period. Food consisted of a pound and a half of pemmican, half a pound of jerky and approximately 5 liters of water each day.
Due to our location up in the Appalachian mountains sound travels very far and the distant train can be heard along with the occasional survey helicopter (especially during the hand drill fire)
This is our first video and as our channel grows the first investment we'll make is high quality cameras, microphones and a decent computer. Until then we'll go with what we got and keep shooting.

To address those that criticize my use of live trees; This is proper forestry stewardship in action. If you'd like learn more about how to tend to the forests, read "Harvesting Timber in Broad-Leafed Forests" here. vikinghawks.com/blogs/greenbrier-bushcraft It's a short read and it will get you started on gaining a deeper understanding of forestry principals.
Type in Summers County, WV into Google Earth and see where we live. This area is almost a deciduous rain forest, there is no dry season here. If it's on the forest floor, it is rotten. Even dead standing trees are usually full of mycelium and the cellulose is greatly digested and can serve no purpose for construction.
If you are going to take the time to build a shelter, it might as well be built to stand for decades. Doing so utilizes less resources in the long run and serves as an emergency shelter for anyone caught in the area during a storm.
My neighbor that I allow to hike on my property has had to use it many times due to sudden cold showers. He's a wildlife and landscape photographer and there's a pond close by the shelter he likes to linger at. He's fit, but he's an old man and was very grateful for this sturdy and dry shelter.
There are other factors as well. This forest was clear-cut 100 years ago and so the quickly growing species, such as maple and poplar, have come to dominate the forest. This area before the deforestation was originally dominated by the food producing species; nut bearing trees such as oak, beech, walnut and hickory and fruit trees such as pawpaws and persimmons.
These trees form the base of the food chain in a healthy deciduous forest. I never harvest these species unless they are growing too closely together. When trees are too tightly spaced, they become weak. In such a moist forest, fungal infection will take root in the weakened trees and jeopardize the other trees surrounding them.
I selectively harvest the maple and poplar, which does very little to feed wildlife, to help bring the forest back to it's natural abundant state. By bringing the forests back in balance, the wildlife become not only more abundant, but also more robust. My practices assist in healing the mistakes of previous generations. ruclips.net/video/BLVgrfnrMqQ/видео.html
its actually a good thing to cut some trees it helps smaller trees that wouldnt have a chance to grow .
I also encourage those who would offer criticism to look around you. Look at what materials your house is made from, your furniture, your clothes. Individuals and communities that live close to the Earth are not the authors of the modern environmental issues we face today.
It is the industrialized utilization of natural resources that consumes the wilderness. It is the urban lifestyle and those that live in the cities that are the ones most guilty of damaging the Earth.
Ask yourself; Where do the resources come from that make up your city and the goods you depend on? Where does the waste go? Do not be blind to your hypocrisy.
@@GreenbrierBushcraft Well said.
I'm not concern about a few trees been cut down. What I concern about is the site you choose for camping. You choose a slopping ground which means, if it rain, there will be a constant stream of water pouring down to your camp. I'm not sure if your camp can hold on to the constant stream of water which might weaken your roof foundation(the point where your roof and ground met). If the water pours down long enough, it might slip through some crack, and then widen the crack, and then water pours down your camp while you sleeping. Have you tried camping at this site during heavy rain? I'm afraid that all your hard work might come to nothing if you encounter heavy rain. If you built this type of camp on the flat ground, then yes, your shelter looks pretty solid. But building on the slope? This is questionable(if you encounter heavy rain that is).
@@yztiffitzy6132 You should have watched the video I linked to in my initial comment. It is very short and answers your questions and criticisms. Here it is again. ruclips.net/video/BLVgrfnrMqQ/видео.html
Knowing the considerations that need made and having the knowledge and experience to properly read the land allows one to build in just about any environment. Humans have been living and building homes in the mountains and on slopes for countless thousands of years.
I built it almost 10 months ago and it has rained and stormed violently MANY times since then (frequently for weeks on end) with never an issue. If one builds with sound principals, a building becomes more solid due to settling and compression. Which is precisely what has happened with this little hunter's camp.
Too many people arrogantly assume to have knowledge beyond your realm of experience. Ask questions and gain in understanding, assume and remain in ignorance.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. In steep country with such a high clay content in the soil slips and falls are inevitable. You have to accept that it's going to happen and be prepared and practiced in landing softly. I fall just about every day to be honest, much of the land here is at 45° or greater and very moist most of the year. If you try to wear lugged soles they'll just fill with clay and be worse than something with less tread. That's why I never walk around with an exposed blade outside of camp, I would be a dead man by now otherwise.
I am reminded of glory and beauty in man's toil.
