You have developed a whole culture there. You have a comfortable house, fresh running water, supplies of fuel, and plenty to eat. If I had to name your culture I would call it Neolithic rather than Primitive. (That's a NICE house!) That turns out to be a much closer approximation to how the old California Indians lived than we could otherwise picture. And you show us they lived well. Do you realize just about the only things I've seen in your videos that might be anachronisms are the machine-tanned breechclout and a poodle? OK, the smreka was probably made of a different fruit but there were millions of people; you know somebody tried it and they liked it. Spanish brandy made them forget their recipes. I find that plausible. What I don't find plausible is that you could find a tree bigger than a telephone pole where you are, cut it down and cut log sections of it and then hollow it out like you did your stone metate with the basketry rim and then split another section into boards, all without iron tools. It would seem to be easier for you to make a ceramic vat, if you already don't have several. (You might. At your cultural level they are quite useful) I am astounded at what I'm learning from you. Now I know why that Cherokee ghost showed me his drum. He wanted people to hear it. Working with bone gets more and more refined with practice. Acorns can be real food for long term settlement. By the way, what you said the California Indians did, having families go to where the trees are when the acorns are at their best, New Mexico Indians still do with certain stands of pine trees where they go to get the pine nuts. It's still a profitable activity. Just remember; if it thunks, it isn't tight enough. Trucker's knots make all the difference.
Great comment Pete! Very large sycamore trees grow here. Cutting one with some tools would prove to be quite a feat! Using fire to cut and hollow it would be more likely. I'm going to start a new settlement in a new location. It will be much better. I invite you to follow along.
@@ChadZuberAdventures You know I am waiting to hear your drum. I looked at Mound Builder pottery last night, and found one footed pot that was perfect for a water drum. I checked the rim for any dents, and there were none. The leather protects the rim of the drum from rimshots. If someone had abused it there would have been chips. I think it's 1,000 years old. You already have a pot that is nearly that shape, but footless. Oh yeah. Make your drum. Taste the magic. (it's really all physics but looking at the world through the boom of a really big water drum can be understood well through a magician's perspective.)
I should write of my experiences with making large wooden powwow drums out of hollow logs. I watched a Mataponi Indian in Virginia get a slice of living oak three feet around and eighteen inches deep. He then carved the outside beautifully. He then drilled the inside to where the drum was an inch thick. As soon as it dried, the next day almost, the drum turned into kindling as it shrank. Learning from this, when I got a hollow log of old growth oak about two feet in diameter and four feet tall I debarked it and cut it into two cylinders and reamed out the hollow until the walls were thin enough that my nerve failed me. That left walls about three to four inches thick. Then I finished the top and bottom edges. I talked with other local powwow drum makers in that area and found that they do the same. Including the part about their nerves! It means their drums are heavy, 20-50 lbs or so. But they hold up. I made four of them. (If you have a big drum, including a big water drum, and you are going to a powwow, bring your drum. Drum failure has been known to occur at powwows. When you can sing with the water drum you may be invited to play. I certainly was.)
