Hi Peter, I was 14 years old when I was licensed in 1964. I never dreamed that equipment would evolve into transceivers like the Yaesu that you have. We are indeed fortunate to have companies that can invest the money in order to produce new sophisticated equipment for a relatively small market. I too have a valve (tube) amplifiers. I enjoy building amps so one of my amps is homemade and it too takes 3 minutes to warmup. My other amp is a Drake L4b that I modified with several improvements. The Drake is instant warm up with directly heated cathodes as opposed to indirectly heated. I do have a homemade antenna tuner. It is fairly high Q and so a bit of retuning is sometimes necessary. My 3 element yagi is also homemade. I mention all of that because I am getting to a stage in my life where less will be better. I am spending a lot of time maintaining "stuff" instead of operating. Thanks for the video and the advice. Oh, my first crystal was 7155kc, yes kc. I never took a class in electronics or engineering. I have learned by doing over these decades with the help of many others who were patient with me. Thanks again Peter. 73, Jim W6LG

Hi Peter… thank you for your insights and information exchange. 71 years old here and I really enjoy the content in your videos. I just purchased the FT 710 and I am looking forward to using it in portable situations with a Magnetic Loop Antenna and an end-fed antenna. So glad to hear that it has a good antenna tuner as I have heard others say that it is limited to 3 to 1 SWR. Take good care.. looking forward to your next video 👍

I’ve only got an Icom IC-705. I enjoy operating QRP, I use a V2000 for 6/2m/70cm, and a wire for HF with AH-705. I’ve worked the world on it. Love the radio, and also that its batteries last forever and fit my ID-52e. Does what I want it to do, and it’s perfect for my enjoyment of the hobby.

Always enjoy your videos Peter. I use a Kenwood TS 440 with a home brew off center fed dipole. Where I live I can’t use a beam because of high winds. Occasionally I use an old Heathkit SB 220 amp but limit it to 600 watts because the output tubes are extremely expensive and hard to find. I have many many contacts in the log all over the world with this gear. 73 KD5JCW

Peter, I love it! I was watching a video of a chap whose shack was choc a block with gear at his station and supplies of every sort in containers in the shack. To each his own, but I don’t have that level of budget or interest,to be frank. I’ve got an FTDX1200 and a manual roller inductor tuner for HF and an FT-60 for VHF/UHF, although I’ll get a better VHF rig at some point, and a QCX mini, I built from the kit. It’s great to see a knowledgeable amateur whose station is reasonable and serviceable. Thank you!

    Oh, *THAT* _”Radio Shack”!_ 😀
That was also the name of a chain of radio/electronics stores here in the USA that has gone out of business.
We also used to have _Lafayette Radio_ stores, too. And _Allied_ that eventually merged with _Radio Shack._ Ham radio doesn't seem to be as popular here in Southern California as in other parts of the country. The nearest store is _Ham Radio Outlet_ that's an hour's drive from here.
My favorite (former) ham radio store was _"George's Ham Shack"_ run by George Callow, W6FEP, now a silent key.

Great video! I'm happy to see your simple radio shack. I have one radio and one antenna and I'm considering an amp. I chuckled that you have an amp with "valves". Reminded me of the old quote, "two countries separated by a common language". I'm in the early phase of researching amps and see you have a video from a year ago. That's my next watch. Thanks again!

Totally agree, simple is better. One can waste hours obsessing over new ham radio kit but it’s better to spend the time operating instead. I spent the last 6 months cluttering/downsizing the shack. I just have a plain desk with a FTDX-101d and a 24inch monitor. On the side a 2m FT-2980. With CW I took the move to sell my Acom-1010.
