  • The Yaesu FT-710 AESS Transceiver was launched just over a year ago. But what many of us may not have realsed was that this was Yaesu's first HF Transceiver that was fully SDR all the way through the RF chain. Peter G3OJV was amazed at the performance and this is perhaps underlined by the fact that it is fourth from top of all-time Sherwood Engineering chart of HF Transceiver, irrespective of price!

Having a mouse hooked up and an external monitor is a game changer. You no longer need to use the touch screen on the radio. The right button brings up the menu. The right button is used to go back. I'm using a 10-inch VGA monitor. it's great and a great radio.

I bought this for the same reason, the mouse and I am running a 24 inch curved monitor on it! Outstamding! ICOM 7300 does not have a monitor connection...

I will never stop hating Yaesu for not giving us this exact same feature on the FTDX10... Despite everyone asking for this sense the day it came out, they ignore us.
It's pure stupidity on an otherwise wonderful radio.

Something not in the video, being able to see exactly where the source of noise is using the "multi" screen, and then scroll the "notch" over that noise is really awesome.

A really well thought out and presented review, more an instruction than review - unlike so many others you’ve actually demonstrated and explained the features.
Still using (and loving) my FT857d but this is the I want to have radio.
Thing is I have an FX-4CR for portable use and ft857d for everything use, the 710 wouldn’t get mobile use nor portable use despite its superior audio quality

Had mine on pre-order before it was released. Had it 14-15 months now. Excellent performer for a small package. Mouse allows full control including menu selection and the mouse scroll wheel also acts as a VFO to change frequency up and down. All great features when hooked up to an external monitor. The noise reduction capabilities are also very good. But despite having it for well over a year, I still learned something from this review: I never noticed the AESS frequency cut off selection!! So thanks for that!

I have been licenced for just over a year and bought a Xiegu G90 as my first radio because I wanted a reasonably low cost radio with all the features this SDR provided. I have also used the G90 as a portable radio on camping holidays with great results. I have never used a traditional radio. Having now passed the intermediate exam I was looking to buy another radio. I was so impressed with the G90 I saved up for the FT 710 field because it was an SDR like the G90 and was nearer my budget. Having read the manual and watched demonstration videos on RUclips I haven't found it too daunting to learn and operate a far more complex radio than the G90. I have also been very impressed with the audio quality and operation of this radio. Using a mouse to control the radio and an old external monitor I was given for free has been the icing on the cake.

Hi Peter, excellent and very useful video. I've been looking at the FT710 since it came out. I have a sailing boat and intended to operate /MM. I have an FT847 and used it a few times on the boat. I like 40 metres but found the 847 very noisy, even if I back off the rf gain to reduce AGC pumping. At home I run a Flex and 40 metres is a joy by comparison, with an almost silent background. So the FT710 being a full SDR transceiver seems very attractive.
A ) it's smaller than the FT847. B) it has the possibility of a much quieter background noise on the lower bands and C) the internal ATU should handle the inverted V dipole that I usually use on the boat. Looks like I'll have to stop off at your shop as I travel South from Derbyshire to Portsmouth.

Great review and insights into the misunderstood 710. I am an ex big Icom then Flex guy. Friend bought a FTDX10 and it blew me away with its receiver and DNR etc. So much so I bought a FTDX101MP and then quickly sold my Flex 6400M. Pure joy to operate and the receiver and noise/Interference filtering stellar. Well, I bought a 710 for field work. I have to say this is the best value for your money in a HF rig there is and I can’t figure out how they did this in such a small package.

Great review Peter. Thanks a lot! I fully agree with your assessment. Just a few things to add. The DNR is adjustable. It really makes a lot of difference in how you match the settings to your environment. I am living in an urban area. In most cases I can kill all the interference it creates. Also the mouse operation is a big advantage. You don't have to fiddle with the fingers on the small screen. The ATU is amazing as you said! I never observed a situation with my end fed random length antenna that could not be matched. There is a small disadvantage that should be mentioned. It's the cooling fan that produces significant noise in receiving mode. I really hope that yeasu can fix it with a SW update. In summary I believe the price / performance relation is amazing.

I have the FTdx10 and IC-705. The Yaesu has a better receiver when conditions are tough but I find the Icom user interface easier. Both are great radios. If you care about working weak stations in a crowded band, external display, etc you’ll like the Yaesu. If you enjoy rag chewing with your buddies or even chasing DX, the 7300 might be more fun. As Peter says, you can’t really go wrong. If you can, find a way to try them at Field day or visiting a friend.

But for those that say its the end for the 7300 i disagree. the 7300 has a lot of feature the 710 doesn't have . the 7300 antenna swr analyser, band edge beep that can be edited and ft8 pre-set button. the 710 does have the atas feature which was the only reason i got one. so the 710 sits in the truck. but for those people buying a radio don't follow fashion do your research first. that bit extra cash gets a few more features. i'll be honest 2 things i hate on the 710. no band edge beep and the 70mhz select.

The FT"DX" 101MP, you quote as the top of Sherwood's List is NOT THE OLD RADIO, ( FT101MP ), ....The FT"DX" 101MP are equal to the FT"DX" 101D....they are both NEW flagship radio's from Yaesu and share top spot on the list. In Fact the flex radio is disqualified ( read the foot notes at the bottom of the list. It was not a stock radio....it had been heavily changed) so the FT710 AESS is #3 on the best radio's list !. I also saw a statement that said EQ was available for receive. I know there is a bass - Mid - treble available....where's the EQ access ?

There's a risk to Yaesu and Icom of shooting themselves in the foot. You produce a budget RF sampling SDR radio with specs that are close to or even exceed their own conventional superhet based radios, and who is going to buy radios like the FT101, IC-7850 or TS-990? Perhaps that explains why several manufacturers are ceasing production of their flagship transceivers.
I know it's only a receiver but the SDRPlay RSPdx, pound for pound, dollar for dollar is the best radio purchase I ever made! The receiver is superb!
The days of requiring a high end box costing many thousands of pounds, to get high end performance are drawing to a close.

Nice radio, but think the "AESS" is a bit of a gimmick. This is something easily achieved by a good two-way loudspeaker ( or two loudspeakers) and an external adjustable crossover. Even a multiband parametric eq will give you what you need....

I agree it's well spec'd and very good value for money, but it's Windows centric.
Good luck trying to work with Linux or Android.
I made that mistake and there is no way of upgrading the firmware without a Windows PC. When you add the cost of a cheap PC it's no longer so cost effective.
I simply do not understand what Yaesu are thinking of. I'm guessing they are tied in to Microsoft by contract.

I have got my 710 for almost a year now in operation. The AESS in my view is a marketing joke. Once you connect the 710 to a real hifi system with amp and loudspeakers, you will be super amazed what kind of sound it can produce. Just go with the field version and an external audio system!

This AESS is a Xmas joke for the hobby newcomers. Replace the cheap ext speaker with a proper one and you'll hear the difference. Also, if temp inside yr shack over 20c, you're going to hear the 60mm cooling fan non-stop, even without transmitting. It is loud enough to be completely ignored.
