    This has to be the cleanest lap I have ever seen on the mountain. Inch-perfect. Using the track to that extend on any track is an achievement, but in the night on THAT track... just WOW

      actually it looked to me like he did make a couple of extremely tiny errors. Seemed like the back end stepped out a tiny bit under acceleration once, and that jump off a kerb looked sub-optimal to me. That's not to diss his lap, i'm an F1 fan so i know how great Max is. I'm highlighting those things more to point out just how good this lap was. Those two tiny things that might not even be things at all, and i'm only saying "looked like", as an acknowledgement of my own inexpert judging. The fact that he can be so close to the limit and not bin it into a wall on that track is mind-boggling. It's even more so when you realise that he could do it lap after lap 100 laps within a few thousandths of a second of each other. I've been racing at my level for thirty years and i can do 5 pushing laps in the same 0.05-0.1 of a second, about it.

      @@johnbeer4963 The rear never stepped out from what I could see. There was a perfect example of slip angle though. The main principle of that being that there is an acceptable amount of tire slip if that falls within a certain angle(usually a couple of degrees) and the tire flex coincides with a small enough amount of centrifugal force and/or inertia that it is actually faster than if there had been no slip angle at all. It is a cool phenomenon I only recently learned about by watching some of the driving technique tutorials on Driver61's RUclips channel.
      Other than that, I think the lines he took over the kerbs was accurate to the way real GT cars take them. Though he was straight up supernatural through the mountain section and downhill onto the back straight. Up to that point, I was pretty confident I could match his lap time. Not so sure after lol. I have gotten to the mid 2:02's there.
      Edit: Just watched it again. I think he may have been as close to perfect as humanly possible. At least from my own knowledge and experience with Mount Panorama.

    Raw pace isn’t the only quality a driver needs; adaptability is equally as important, and I think Max has proved that with the Red Bull being stupidly difficult to drive, and with being able to genuinely compete with the pro sim drivers. Driving in a top team is not what makes Max a fast sim racer. He is both a gamer and a racer which means his skills or knowledge of how to get the most from the car are relatable between real and sim. Some real world drivers that don't play sims much or not at all can become real fast in a game if they are able to adapt, but there are also plenty of racing drivers that can not make the transition because of the lack of G Forces and so do poorly because they are trained to feel the car and reacting to it, as apposed to seeing a slide and reacting to it as in the case of driving on a monitor.
      A lot of the younger folk these days are fast in game and in real life as todays kids are brought up with computer games so the transition is much easier for them. For the older generation it is more of a problem so finding one of these guys that are fast in real life and the game are more spread out than kids of today.

      Driving at night is faster than during the day. The ambient temp is cooler which means the air is thicker, more power.

    • @midslam
      @midslam 2 года назад +3

      @@stagger87 Yeah typo, was talking ambient temp, meant air. Corrected.
      It's just a known fact that a car travels faster in colder ambient. Yes it's dark but the best drivers aren't bothered by this, and yes colder track but tyres are warmed up more to compensate.
      Once both those things are taken into account, the extra horsepower gained by driving in colder air far outweighs the very small loses from night and cold track, car in the hands of a professional like the bloke in the video.

    • @SpocksBro
      @SpocksBro Год назад

      @@stagger87 Colder air means higher air density. Higher air density means one can inject more fuel (while trying to stick to an ideal fuel/air mix ratio of around 1:15 depending). That in turn causes bigger boom and generates more power. No clue where you got that "thicker oil" argument from but it's irrelevant. Don't know about iRacing but it might not even include air temp/air density in their engine power simulation.
