IKEA Kallax Shelf Reinforcement for HEAVY Vinyl and HI-FI Equipment

  • I have been using this IKEA shelf for my records for a few years. I needed to reinforce it in order to move my vintage AV equipment on top of it. plus it's always been a little wobbly. IKEA didn't intend this bookshelf for 800 lbs of weight. Since I was moving and had to remove EVERYTHING, I decided this was my golden opportunity to build it the way I should have on day 1.
I reassemble the shelf (for the 2nd time), reinforcing with wood glue and clamping the unit tight to keep it perfectly square. Then I add two cross braces out of 1x3x8 which makes the shelf rock solid. I also add shelf stops to keep the records flush with the front. Everything is painted to match the original shelf. I also took the liberty of reorganizing and cleaning my basement recreation room and built myself a great sound room.

I just published a roller cart that goes underneath it too. You can check that out as well.

I'm moving at the end of the month and was looking to reinforce mine on day 1 in the new place. This is a perfect guide and most likely how i'll be going. Thanks!

Save yourself the agony, and build the rolling cart for it as well. Recently did a video on that too. Some thing I wished I had done from the get-go this way every time you need to rearrange the room, it’s not such a chore.

Good guess my friend. I was pretty close to a black belt when I stopped and decided to have kids instead.

Nice job, looks good. I got a kick out of your boy, as he reminds me of my neighbors son who looks and acts exactly the same, lol.

Kids really are a trip for sure. I remember helping my dad many times at that age. A lot of running for tools too!

I’m working on a video right now where I built a rolling cart for it because I’m tired of moving 450 records every time I want to move the shelf

Great video man! I have two of those, and they are wobbly. For sure copying this video 😂😂😂

I’m glad you liked it. After doing this project I wished I had done it when I had first put it together to begin with. Having to take all the records out and put them back in was not a lot of fun as they wait quite a bit. Good luck with yours, my friend!

The video that’s coming out next week. I built a rolling base for it so you can roll the shelf around.

I need to think about doing this - did your shelves come with doubled dowels? Pipe clamp extensions are quite the discovery!

    • @armedanddangerousdiy6096
      @armedanddangerousdiy6096  7 месяцев назад +1

Yes they came with dowels. Some of them broke when I took it apart so I made new ones out of dowel rods.
The extensions are a way to store your long clamps in a short way. Build all your clamps as 24 inch long which are easy to store. Then make 60 inch extensions. Piece of cake. I actually did a video on pipe clamp storage.

Wonder if this could be used for old crt tvs for retro gaming. Can't find much on the market that can hold a chonky 30kg + TV

I would think so. The old school hifi system I have on top weights more than 30 kg. Make sure the cross braces screw into every divider it crosses…not just the thick edge boards. It would be even stronger if you used plywood and covered the entire back…but I’m cheap and used wood I already had.
If you are putting the crt inside a cubby do this:
mount the shelf so the two long middle dividers are parallel to the ground. that would be the strongest. Records are VERY heavy and I’m not having issues.
You could also add filler strips of wood underneath the two long divider shelf ends. The reason is the thick outer edge is hollow core and won’t support the two thin dowels into the long board divider edge. Otherwise The weight might cause the dowel to tear through the shelf edge. The filler strips should be the same as the divider thickness. Am I making sense? If not I’ll send you a video.
