Dear Ruby, usually I’m a silent viewer but these days I felt the need to comment on one of your videos to thank you. I ordered your planner in August and it really changed my life. I switched between bullet journaling, different calendars etc. for quite some time and never found the right thing for me. But now that I’m using your planner since the start of September, I feel so productive and powerful but still super calm - I grab it several times a day, check some to dos or add something. I know it helps me become an organised student who keeps track of everything in her life 🌞 wishing you all the best
I love this new direction you've taken with your channel! I'm one of those "weekend academics", and balancing academic pursuits with the responsibilities of adult life is difficult. I enjoy learning foreign languages and try to set aside time each day for study. But, I am a full-time homemaker and mother to four children, and two of my children have special needs. Caring for my youngest is a 24-7 job, so finding the time to explore my interests can be difficult. I'm inspired by your example, of balancing your businesses yet finding time to study outside of the guidance and schedule of university. Thank you for sharing as you go through this phase of life!
I'm also an older (than Ruby) viewer and work full time and God eys balancing things is so hard. The fact you have a high needs kid, make time for learning and are a homemaker is remarkable!
Oh this gives me a lil hope- im a first time mum (our daughter is only 9 months old) so i was like how am i going to ever study again ? And carve time out for myself - but gosh youve inspired me - cant imagine being a mum to to 4 and who have special needs and are able to study even just for a bit. 😊
Some free PhD application advice. The PhD idea you start off with doesnt always resemble what you end up with, so dont be too set on the one idea. Its also a good idea to research the staffs interests at the university you are applying to. Because these are the people who pick PhD candidates, they generally want candidates with the same interests as them. So look at their research output. It can also be useful to have had paid research experience when applying. Which is why looking out for funded posts is handy. They not only give you paid research experience, they also provide you with potential refs going forward as well as experience writing up a professional proposal. Writing a great proposal is key to getting an interview. Its good to show enthusiasm for self directed learning but it comes second to paid experience. When you do get a place, keep track of your time because funding is time limited. Have an idea of what you want finished and by when. And dont be afraid to change supervisors, because they will change you if or when they get a better job offer which is very common. I finished mine with an entirely different team than when I started. You will be a Dr before you know it.
I'm applying to PhD positions in biology and the process is *very different.* I only apply to advertised positions were there's already a project description and almost all of them already have funding for a PhD student. Of course, there's always the option to come up with your own project and find someone who is willing to supervise you, but then you also have to sort out your own funding. The key to getting an interview for a PhD in biology is a relevant background, references and a motivational letter/cover letter where you describe why you want the position and how you will benefit the project. For example, I have experience working with ancient DNA in one of the most prestigious research groups in the world, even though my grades are meh I still end up in the top 5-10% of applicants for most positions I apply for.
@@ellenkarlsson9490 we apply for advertised positions which have a broad topic of interest which is generally in an area which attracts funding. The sectond point applys to pretty much any PhD candidate. If she applies it will more likely be the model I described.
@@harryhill8543 Do you have to submit writing samples for a PhD in literature/humanities? I'm guessing language and being a good writer are more important in literature than in STEM. But do they ask for proof? If you have to submit your own proposal, I guess that can count as a sample. Only about half of the positions I've applied for ask for a thesis or paper. I suspect the reason is just as much to check where my expertise lies as to check whether I can write or not.
@@harryhill8543 I have seen ads for positions in the USA that are more general, like you describe. (I don't apply to those for a number of reasons.) I have only applied for one position where you got to write your own project proposal. Instead they decided that the project would focus on fish, very similar to what the supervisor is already working on. So what was even the point of writing a proposal in the first place? I’m so excited to see you on this PhD journey! Even though I’m years out of school, I started self learning Norwegian. For context, I’m mostly Norwegian, but my family never properly taught us, and I want to visit there someday. Your school videos make me want to get back into learning since I unfortunately fell off the wagon.

To bring the academic environment to your room, you could always create a syllabus. I'm teaching online right now because I need to rest from the classroom, but I decided to create a syllabus for my own independent study. That keeps me on track too.
I study with the Open University and independent study is indeed hard to keep on track with. Especially when we connect with other students via WhatsApp groups and forums rather than in person. It’s so satisfying though to do the work and know you pushed through the unmotivation and completed it. 😊
@karen. I did a BA in humanities with art history with the OU. It was about 10 years ago now and I was in my 50s. For the final year I studied children's literature which I really loved. We still had a few face to face sessions then with our group and tutors. I loved the studying. Good luck with your OU studies, keep enjoying it.

I’m attempting to finish a degree and it’s all a bit daunting. 20yrs since I’ve been in college but I tell myself there are innumerable amounts of resources now that will make it easier.
Good luck with your studies! Which degree are you doing? I'm 31 and I'd love to study again :)
I'm 6 exams away from finishing my degree and I'm 42! The first degree I finished in my early 20s. You can do it!!
Thank you for the encouragement! 😊 I’m looking at the social psychology field or become a reading specialist.
can't wait to watch the new vlog!! hope you're having a lovely September :)
Thank you for another wonderful video. It gives me so much joy watching these. Also I love how you still do letter writing! Can you share how you got pen pals?
Love that you studied the Brontë’s Juvenilia the same week I did! We covered “Mina Laury” and it’s so interesting to see how these influenced their later works!
Thank you for providing me with a nice long “Ruby fix” for today! I’m staying up late just to watch it, which will not help me get up early in the morning. I’m trying to become a morning person but I keep defeating myself by staying up too late! Ugh! I admire you so much for your maturity, determination and discipline. Not only that, but I like you as well because you are so genuine and nice! I figured you were aiming toward a Ph.D., so go for it because I know you can do it! 😊
Ruby you should come and surf in Australia one day! I live near the town where Ripcurl (the brand of your new jumper haha) was founded, which has a big surfing culture - as well as pretty much anywhere else that's coastal here! The nature is different to what you might find in Devon, but equally just as pretty and varied. Excited to see where you go with your PhD plans!! x
Wishing you all the best in your next journey getting a PhD. I’ve followed you for years and somehow felt you would get into Oxford and always thought you would be an excellent PhD candidate. Your writings are so expressive and thoughtful and you have all it takes to succeed in life. Best of luck!
everytime I feel I wanna give up study, I click to Ruby channel, just unintentionally
It is admittedly a little bit damp………oh Ruby, you summed up this week perfectly. I feel like I’m getting mildew. What a lovely holiday, thanks for taking us with you. I miss being young and having a family like this. Enjoy every minute.
the "we are born beautiful" quote is from rupi kaur, ruby
A lovely vlog as always Ruby, thankyou. I'm so pleased you decided to pursue your DPhil (I'm assuming you are hoping to do it at Oxford), I'm sure your obvious love of research will stand you in good stead - all the best and I look forward to watching your journey.
Love your cozy vlogs Ruby🙂 You are always an inspiration❤️❤️
What a lovely vlog. Thank you Ruby ❤️❤️
Lola is having such a great time, very sweet dog.
"we are all born / so beautiful / the greatest tragedy is / being convinced we are not" is from a poet name rupi kaur, she's a wonderful writer! ♡
i'd like to share: thank you for sharing your life in the way that you do. your videos feels like a warm sunrise, comforting, light pouring everywhere. i recently found of your channel through mina rome. since then, i have been writing more, reading more, commonplacing, and overall expanding my knowledge. my heart has been heavy with grief lately. your videos are like a safety net. thank you for being you. i wish you kindness with your PhD journey. you deserve good things. :)
Love your channel, always watching for cosy vibes and always get that! Keep up the fab videos m’love!❤
I really enjoyed this vlog. So cosy, calm and comforting. Thanks for sharing!😊❤
Love the Leviosa part so much!
31:23 stunning Ruby! What a great time spent with family. Surfing is the greatest x
Lola eating ice cream and enjoying the beach ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Once again your videos make me miss the UK!
I really enjoyed your video, as I always do. I understand the struggle in self learning. There always seems to be responsibilities and I feel guilty reading when I could be doing something else. I have lots of books but I never seem to take the time to read them and I really need to start doing that. Let us know when how your PHD application turns out.
How enchanting a trip and with no one around. Love
I am so sorry you lost your laptop Ruby! Your new laptop case is so beautiful 🤩
Your hair is looking beautiful Ruby!
I'd like to do a re-read of To the Lighthouse at some point. I had read Mrs. Dalloway before that but I found the stream of consciousness a bit easier to follow in that. I think I missed a lot with Lighthouse the first time around.
I'm a Japanese student studying in Australia and visiting England is my dream.Thank you for always sharing such wonderful videos.I look forward to watching more in the future🫶🏻
What state are you in?
Heyyy ruby!!
I just wanted to say, you are a beautiful inspiration for me as someone who has recently graduated school (just yesterday!!!)
I can't wait to see what you post in the future - it's been a lovely 3 years since I have been with you on this youtube journey!
Would you be able to make a video reviewing some books that your are reading atht emoment? I'd love to get some new reccomendations :)
Stay safe and happy ~~
I'll start by telling you what I'm reading - its a novel called All our Shimmering Stars by trent dalton and you may search it up if it sounds interesting. I highly HIGHLY reccomend it t you - its got some beautiful themes and invigorating characters
Congratulations for graduation🎉😊🎉
It was so good to see new things apart from your usual stuff, which is also lovely, feeling so inspired by you❤
I really love watching your vlog. I live in Exeter and studied with the OU between 2005-10 on classical Greece and Rome but never finished my degree. You inspire me to go back to academia
I'm interesting in studying with OU on the side of full time work. Is there a reason you didn't want to finish?
This is my 1st semester back to finish my degree ❤ it's hard but worth it 🎉
I received an ultimatum from my NHS manager and terminated the next module of my history. Really bad decision
@@bluemethbunny I did want to finish but pressure from my female manager forced me to terminate the next module. You wood think the NHS wood encourage studying part time !!!
I am currently working on my Ph.D. and love it! Would it be possible for you to list titles and authors of books you reference in your videos in the video notes? I enjoyed so many of the books you’ve mentioned, but sometimes it’s tricky to catch the title/author. Love your channel! 😊
Hearing you describe The Drownings reminds me of the aesthetic of the book If We Were Villains
Yes! It’s really similar actually! (Not in terms of content, but vibe!)
Loved the unboxing part! 😍 I always find new tech so exciting. Also, your writing website sounds amazing, can’t wait to check it out! Keep shining, Ruby! 🌟
Added The Drownings to my tbr, I also love books with elements of non-fiction. I found The Cloisters and Babel brilliant for that as well
Ruby, I love your videos! They are so beautiful and well-shot. You are amazing and kind. :)
I love long videos, I love your vlogs, I love your channel❤❤
I lived my whole life by the beach and now live in a big capital city so this brings me so much peace!
not sure how, but this whole vlog is ultra comfy
Lovely video! Me and my family were in North Devon for the week from the 21st, but it absolutely chucked it down aaalll week! Glad you still got some surfing in despite it 👍 PS I tried To the Lighthouse recently and had zero idea what was going on in it! 🤔😂
Hello Ruby, I follow you from Iran and I really liked your lifestyle and studies. I hope I will be successful like you. I wish you the best.❤❤❤❤😊
Let us try to build a peaceful world together, inspite of our crazy leaders. It's sad to think that us people long for the same things and want to live in harmony with each other, but our leaders instill conflict all over the world ❤
@@lifeiswonderful2023not our learder but your leaders doesn't like to live with peace. Killing inoocent people, women and children and oldpeople for absolutely nothing.
Beautiful house, beautiful garden .... next to an air field ....
This video was SO COZY. 🥰 I literally just finished reading a book set on the Devon coast called “ The House on the Cliff” by D.E. Stevenson. Highly recommended!
The last blackberries here that were still good to eat were like 3 weeks ago. I never really enjoyed them but this year they were kinda of a treat while taking a walk. Just be careful cause i realized some have fly eggs inside and we might not notice. Try to open then first before bitting
You are a great example of an academic explorer . Good ideas to you in career. 😊
AH! Losing my laptop would be an utter nightmare. It must have been a really tough time coming to terms with it - so glad you took it in your stride Ruby! :)
Hey Ruby,
Loving to see u like surfing! I am a surfer too and there are not so many of us loving the cozy bookish things and in the same time enjoying a good surf..
Would love to see u in surf-action as well the next time u go for a surf with ur dad again 🥰
I like how this video is structured. First the tease of things to come and then the magic unfolds.
P.S: could you please please tell me where you get your music from.
Ahh that’s so lovely! Thank you! And I can add the music in the description. It’s all from epidemic sound though :) x
Is it just me or that tree lief was moving on its own at 28:40!!! Thank you Ruby for taking us with you, I was kind of traveling with you HAHA. For PhD, I was thinking for days why doesn't Ruby just apply for a PhD program since she loves academia this much?!!! so happy to hear that you're thinking about it.
Thank you Ruby ❤
Ruby, you look so alike to Hermione Granger . You are the greatest inspiration to me these days . Thanks 😊
Ruby try using find my laptop, like I do for my Apple watch and iPhone. You have probably already tried it. 🌻
I have done :( it stopped showing up the day that I lost it which is so strange!
I really want to read “The Drownings " it’s on my wish list 😊 Great video thank you 💜💜
If you like The Drownings I think you would really enjoy The Burnings by Naomi Kelsey!
‘It is, admittedly, a little bit damp’ Another existential statement, with a rhythm to it 🙃
Ruby, I wish you the best of luck applying for your PhD. Are you focussing your thesis on Charlotte Bronte or Jane Austen? I love the Devon countryside. It looks so beautiful with its pristine sea and picturesque green hills.
What a lovely vlog, Ruby! Good luck on your PhD!
Watching your videos from North West Wisconsin USA
Good morning from NYC!
Morning!
Lola is adorable!!!
Ruby, I'm watching from Brazil, and I love your channel. 🥰🇧🇷
