    I love both 03 and BH, but the manga is by FAR my favorite, for many reasons- including the ones you listed.
    I still haven’t forgiven BH for taking the scene where the Elrics and Hughes acknowledge that Winry was right, that sometimes words are necessary for communication- and completely reverses it to prove Winry wrong, for no reason that I can discover.

    I like how the manga and 03 handled Tucker and Hughes death way better than FMAB. They took their time and developed the characters first. FMAB feels like they're just telling you to care about the characters before they do something while 03/manga actually makes you care about them.
    I also don't much care for the random comedy in the middle of a very tense moment.

  • @charcoal200

    "I don't think Ed has much personality in Brotherhood."
    Accurate. Especially coming off of '03, Ed feels watered down in Brotherhood. Oddly enough, where '03 really explores Ed as a character and makes the story feel like it's about him and his journey, Brotherhood feels like Al is more of the main character. Even going so far as to give Al more of the 'epic fight scenes' treatment.

    • @etheri0n959
      @etheri0n959  3 года назад +11

    • @esthelleg7037
      @esthelleg7037 10 месяцев назад +2

      To be fair, I think both Elrics get pretty watered down in Brotherhood, compared to their manga portrayal. They’re both a lot less flawed, entire chunks of Al’s arc and personality are missing, and Ed starts to feel strangely complacent, when he’s meant to grow in the opposite direction.

  • @ThePreciseClimber
    @ThePreciseClimber 3 года назад +16

    I think they could've scrapped the first episode of FMAB and used those 22 minutes for Yoki and the train. I mean, Episode 1 only exist to tease some story elements from the manga. Honestly, that's kind of obnoxious. "Ha ha! We'll show you how loyal this adaptation is going to be! ...by creating a completely original Episode 1."
    The manga also doesn't give us the full picture of the brothers' human transmutation until much later (Volume 6). So that means in the manga the Tucker incident was the first time the brothers failed to save the day.

    • @etheri0n959
      @etheri0n959  3 года назад +3

      True, that last point about the tucker part is crucial. Thanks for your input.

    • @esthelleg7037
      @esthelleg7037 10 месяцев назад +2

      Exactly! Brotherhood’s Episode 1 also makes the entire Liore episode pretty obsolete, since it reveals the Elrics’ trauma, has the antagonist discover Ed’s automail and Al’s empty armor, introduces the philosopher’s stone, and proves the stone a fake. As a result, when Liore rolls around, it feels rushed and repetitive, which is tragic because in the manga, it’s pretty much the ideal introduction.

    Having read the mange for the first time back in 2019 I full on agree with how the manga in a majority of the time was better than how Brotherhood adapted the material. Plus looking back on it it did feel like they were rushing quite a bit to get to the Promised Day arc which is my favorite part of Brotherhood but it is unfortunate the adaptation had to be rushed along the way to get there. I might have to give the manga a try. I've heard that brotherhood is not a manga perfect adaptation (despite fans claiming it is), which isn't a problem in itself of course-- except that brotherhood seems to only make changes for the worse, cutting out a lot of great moments from the manga. I feel like brotherhood messes up the introduction to many of its characters, which also negatively affects the rest of the series. That first episode, which throws a lot of characters at the viewer really quickly, doesn't help. 2003 nails character introductions, and I'm guessing the manga does too. Good stuff, keep up the good work!

  • @spaceocean2530
    @spaceocean2530 3 года назад +14

    Brotherhood makes everything...easier. Especially when it comes to characters. Their motivations and personalities are simplified to a great extent. No one in brotherhood is hard to understand, no one. It is very black and white in it's depiction of morality, personalties and systems. For example, Hughes is a great example of a character being purity washed in brotherhood. Certain actions and comments that were ambiguous in 03 and the manga become unironically "good" in broho. Like Hughes compartmentalizing during the war, the manga gives you space to have your own judgment on that. However, Brotherhood has Mustang say that Hughes is really strong for it and gives him heroic music. It's so gross.
    I have my issues with the manga, but I agree that it is much better than Brotherhood. If I had to list my most fav fma media to my least favorite, it would be: 03, manga. Brotherhood, Shambala, Milo's, the live action movie.

  • @Lemmy8935
    @Lemmy8935 3 года назад +5

    No I actually agree with you on this. As much as I love Brotherhood, I have to admit it was corny at times. Sure, I think there were scenes that had excellent delivery and stellar animation, but it doesn't make up for the rushed introduction or the over the top comedy. Even the cinematography is not a strong point for Brotherhood since numerous shots seem to be copy pasted panels from the manga. Yes, there are impactful panels in the manga but like you said, it doesn't necessarily work in an anime as it is a different medium. The manga has scenes that I'm surprised were omitted from Brotherhood and the artwork is exceptional, especially for a softer artstyle. It may not be as heavily detailed as other series but its strengths lie in being easy to follow since it doesn't deviate toward minor details and it has it's own personality. Even then, I think Arakwa has incredible panels that unfortunately go unnoticed since the quality of online scans take away the shading and linework she implemented. I still love Brotherhood as it has its strengths but I as well prefer the manga.

    I’m not surprised. I watched both shows last summer and I’ve been wanting to get the manga because I was curious about the possibility that it fixes many of my problems with Brotherhood. The fact that so many of BHs problems (from what I can now presume) werent even there in the source material becomes much more laughable when you remember that the manga was written AND DRAWN by one woman by herself publishing one chapter a month over the course of ten years all the while (to my knowledge) popping out TWO KIDS during said ten year period while still remaining on schedule the entire time WITHOUT the benefit of source material. Those guys had no fucking excuse. Like literally none.
    By the way what do you think of BH’s music? I don’t like it at all, personally. I think the tracks completely lack dynamics and every instrument sounds like it’s playing at the same volume. Not to mention it's just so fuckin loud. Not only that but the OST has around eighty tracks total but it feels like they keep using the same ten over and over. If I had to guess how many times they play the last 30 seconds of THIS TRACK (m.ruclips.net/video/H-W7xveVzUw/видео.html) over the course of the series my completely unironic estimation would be about fifty.
    Be sure to let us all know your overall thoughts when you finish it. Especially be on the lookout for whether or not Envy’s death scene is more tolerable. I have no doubt that it is.

    • @etheri0n959
      @etheri0n959  3 года назад

      Yeah the mangaka for fma is a champ. For the ost, I didn't find it to be memorable. My main issue with the ost is like you said the repetitiveness of it, but also the fact that so many tracks are incredibly one dimensional and bland. And yeah, I'm for sure gonna pay a lot of attention to envy in the manga and make an update video when I'm finished. Thanks for the comment.

    I’m having my brother watch the first few episodes of 03 and read some of the manga, first before FMAB for this EXACT reason. I watched all of 03 first blind knowing nothing other than what happened to Nina. I loved it so much and after I watched CoS, which I have mix feelings about and believe could be so much better, and after that I couldn’t wait to start FMAB. Now I actually love FMAB better than the 03, mostly bc of the ending and part 3-5 are great, and understand Ed’s character more bc I watched the 03 version first. I recently understood this when I was begging my friend to watch FMAB and she told me she was having trouble getting into it and really disliking the 3rd episode. I realized that Ed is more of a jerk in that one and had to explain to her that Ed isn’t always like that, he just immature. Also the the mechanical arm and mining episodes really do Ed justice, in showing a part Ed that is hard to find in FMAB. Now another thing they really messed up, that honestly made me mad after reading vol 15 of the manga was how they adapted the Ishvalan War. Out of a WHOLE vol they have a few flash backs and like an episode, and I hate that. If only the 03 waited or even FMAB wasn’t created until mid 2010s we would’ve had the perfect adaptation, but that’s only in some alternate universe somewhere.
