Owner of a '97 GT-S here. Yeah, people often forget now, that when these were new, they were not cheap cars at all. If you had one, it was quite something that people got jealous over. haha
I plan to keep mine permanently, as it's my little piece of my youth that never really ages, and allows me to (kind of) go back to the 90s whenever I sit in it.

I've owned a '90 for 22 years and I love the car. Need to make a correction though. When equipped with the original Fujitsu AM/FM/CD/Tape unit the car had a retractable cup holder under the stereo. Didn't hold mega-mugs but it did hold standard 90's sized cups/cans/bottles. Car has few upgrades but a local speed shop did a total main bearings up engine rebuild, including a new factory head, around 10,000 miles ago. Also added a Japanese market 3" stainless steel exhaust and replaced the 10 speakers w/same size Infinitys.
Toyota produced & exported just enough of these to qualify for World Rally Cup racing; other than mine I've seen only one other. Still turns heads :)

Excellent video and car. I had a 91 GT coupe 5 speed that was around $16K new so $26K for the top dog was a lot more. The quality was top notch and I really had no major problems. A friend of mine bought a 90 All Trac years later around 2005 and we did the clutch on it that was a nightmare job that took 2 days. A LOT of disassembly is required. The Toyota 86 is sort of the successor to the Celica these days so kudos to them for still making an affordable small sporty car.

I have a 1992 JDM GT-Four, so it's nice to see these getting some love. Great overview.
You got it right about the low revs not being inspiring--I mean, it's only generating about 100hp down low. It's a square motor so it's balanced hp/torque. If you're trying to keep it quiet in your neighborhood it has sufficient power to creep along at 1000-2000rpm, but it really comes alive at 3000rpm+ and screams at 5000rpm when it hits the top of its power band.
I agree about the transmission--it's clunky and mechanical. But it lets you know you're working it.
As for the big bottle, you put that in the passenger seat and your would be passenger can get bent because who wants to carry all that dead weight?
This AllTrac's sale price of $26,438 in 1990 dollars is equivalent to $58,000 in 2022; these were halo products back in the day. No wonder they didn't do well. But as they were really only a byproduct of Toyota's WRC aspirations, commercial success didn't really figure into Toyota's thoughts. Plus, bubble-era Japan economy led to optimism and visions of grandeur.
The owner of this one did a really great job keeping it stock, and that's probably why you reviewed this one. But if you add an aftermarket exhaust, it's easy to get a robust engine note from it. As for pizazz, I remind you of what I heard about Toyotas: "The joy of driving a Toyota kicks in at 15 years when you haven't made a payment for ten years or had a major service and you realize that's likely to continue for another ten years."
As for personality, the driver adds that. These are stable appliances and a bit heavy. But a light tune to wring 250bhp out of the 3S-GTE will have no real impact on reliability.

  • @bwofficial1776
    @bwofficial1776 2 года назад +8

This car is so clean. The original owner loaded it up and the subsequent owners (if any) kept it mint. Toyota can really build a good sports car if and when they want to. I'd take one of these over a DSM car, especially after Mitsubishi starting chasing engineering gadgets and made their cars overweight.

Its a good 6 footer, it has its issues up close but its so solid and held up very well. What shocks me is how heavy it actually is, this being the widebody, ac, leather, sunroof, system 10 version probably the bulkiest of the generation, it does change direction quickly but as it sits right now its not much to speak of speed wise, she is a great highway car tho. Itll ait at highway speeds for hours with no issue, just smoothly eating the miles.

This is a good overview on the ST185. From my perspective, the Alltrac/GT-Four(essentially the same car; I've owned/driven both JDM and USDM variants outside of the RC/CS) is a bit understated and lacks a bit of drama, though there's this feeling of solidity underneath that you don't get in the FWD Celica variants. It feels more tanky. They do respond well to upgrades; I've got a few on my ST165(previous generation, '88-'89), though you still have a pretty civilized car on top.
Now, if you want that rush, pizzazz, and drama you'll want to go for the SW20 MR2 Turbo. I own one side by side with the Celica; despite sharing essentially the same engine it's a far different experience. You get to hear that 3S going off behind you; even with the stock bypass valve you hear it. The 'out to get you' factor is also there by design, and being significantly lighter than the Celica makes it surprisingly quick(that same boost controller will put it on par with most of its contemporary 'betters' like a stock A80 Supra Turbo, NSX, and even spitting distance of the Ferrari 348). Both cars are incredible fun, though maintenance and parts availability can be a bit of a chore.

Shift action on these is pretty decent when new, but it gets sticky & notchy over time due to rust & grime build-up on the linkage. Simply spray some cleaner/lubricant on the linkage several times while working thru the gears with the car off. Shifter loosens up and feels like butter after this. Do a final spray with a thick lube that will cling for an extended period. The linkage is visible from the engine bay. It's just behind & under the engine. Use a spray can with a spray tube attachment on the nozzle so the spray stream can be directed onto the linkage.

It's an extremely cool car. Best of the Celica's IMO. If you really want more, you go for the luxurious MKIII Supra. It's better in every possible way except for the weight. Even so I never hop in my MK3 and think "Man this car looks cheap inside, boring, not a blast to drive, and it doesn't have a personality!"
The MR2 is the REAL Toyota sports car, but the interior feels like an econobox compared to the Surpa. Ironically the MK3 Supra is still probably the cheapest of the three still.

A 90s all track celica has as much power as a 2022 turbo civic si smh honda should of at least upped 20 hp after this long... nice review bro, I seen the 6th gen vid also...celica has super potential as a project car and great looks through the generations

Toyota should just bring the Celica back in this form for 2025, since many modern cars are Turbo I-4 AWD anyway. Just slightly modernize the look, but keep the car the same size and shape.

Ive read between 13-1700 being made between the 90-93mys. Not sure how many are left but given how toyotas of that generation rusted there cant be many left.

The cup holder would had been located where that massive headunit it. It would had still failed the big friggin bottle test though. Also the system 10 does sound good as long is it is controlled by the stock head unit. Toyota over complicated their systems in this era and it is hard to get an aftermarket head unit to really work with the stock sound system without redoing most of it. Toyota had an identity crisis when they launched this car. It was a homologation special, but somehow it was aimed at audi quatro buyers. They put good (heavy) materials and focused more on luxury rather than being fast. That choice hurt the car in the end by making it more expensive and hiding its racing soul. Luckily some simple mods can rectify that and it can hoon with the best of them.

I personally love that it doesn't have "boost noise." Subtle and classy, yet can still rip especially if you mod it for more power. Blow off valves, etc. are annoying, pointless, and overall very overrated.

It started off as a gimmick to add some consistency and something fun for repeat viewers to look for, and now it's a part of my regular routine! I've done it in every car since the start of 2021.

i almost got one of these back in 2002 but i knew i'd have to hold on to it for too long for it to be worth anything and i didn't like it coz it was ugly. there was a really badass celica out at the time that had a really good high band top speed in 5th gear etc...the gts. what really is also rare is the previa alltrac that is also an s/c. overseas the corollas were a big deal.

Damn you messed up man, you can swap the front end and hood pretty easily for the better looking RC style bumper and hood and then you have one of the most beautiful rally cars ever built, in quite literally thee rarest model/trim ever made (less than 1750 units, so its rarer than the RC or the WRC ST205)

Ugly? Most people (including me) think the Gen 5 is one of the best looking Celicas of all time and the All-trac is the best of the best. Bought mine in '98 and was recently offered 4X more than I bought if for. However, she is not for sale.
