Fishing With WD 40

- After hearing about fishermen using WD-40 as a fish attractant, I decided to do my own research and experiment. Many fisherman spray WD-40 on baits or lures believing that it will attract fish. The Truth is that it is just polluting the waters and doing more harm than good. I did this ONE TIME experiment to show that WD-40 does NOT catch fish or attract them. Please refrain from using this method as there are plenty of natural attractants that work just fine without harming the environment. To learn more about us please visit our website at: www.muddyrivercatfishing.com/i...
Using WD-40 as a fish attractant was first discovered by winter steelhead fishermen who used WD-40 to keep their reels from freezing. The WD-40 got onto their hands and transfered on to the baits they were using. Catch rates went up. It takes very little WD-40 on a bait to stimulate a fish to bite. Walleye fishermen on Lake Erie had success with it, too. As far as pollution goes you 2 stroke outboard puts far more oil into the water.
Why are there so many dislikes on this video, this man went through a lot of work to try his best to make a quality video. More this is the most professionally made non-professionally made video I've ever watched. He didn't say anything heavily controversial, and there is nothing wrong with the video. There is no reason that there should be any dislikes, what's wrong with people?
And thank you for the insight, I will not be using WD-40 any time soon.
+Me Because people are too fucking stupid to read the description...they just want someone to yell at.
he used a harmful product as a bait. its a petroleum based product.. so its gonna fuck.the environment
Lukas Weber lol do you really think that a microscopic amount of wd-40 is going to "fuck.the environment"? You could dump an entire can of wd-40 in the water every day and not even come CLOSE to the amount of damage that big corporations do in 1 minute.
***** look, i get it dude. i don't agree with it either, but in the grand scheme of things it's nothing...like pissing in the ocean. pick your battles. jesus.
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to show this. Give a hoot don't pollute. That water sure looks like it's moving right along. I don't get to go fishing anymore, but it sure was fun back then. Take care...Ken....Marina CA.
That's a really good idea of the sponge, I'm so curious for the outcome of this test.
I appreciate this man taking the time to put these myths to the test.
probably the most interesting fishing related video i have ever watched. good job and nice experiment
That is one cool dog. He was watching you at 100% attention spraying the wd40. Very alert. Smart dog.
it probably sounded like a snake to the dog xD
Just had this discussion with a friend of mine as trout season started here. Thank you for doing the leg work for me.
It only work with rusty fish. Do another video with rusty fishes, I hear they are very attracted to WD40.
yeah, like...Salmon Rusty.... the well known author of "The satanic verses".......
Haaha! Got that right off. That is so funny.
River is already rusty do not you see that mate he says it does not work?
You win the comment section 🏆!!!
🤣🤣😆
Damn those rusties. Always gotta scrape em off the hook haha
My old man used to use peanut butter balls to catch bull heads.
I love your doggy. Give him a pat for me.
I've learned a lot watching the Muddy River videos. Thanks for the info, bro, and good luck out there. Keep the videos coming!
thanks!
Ive heard that it not attracting the fish, it just covers the scent of the human smell on the bait
It used to have fish oil in it but i do believe its been removed and made illegal do to pollution in most states. Its retarded honestly why would u wanna use that to catch fish ur gonna eat?
You can do the same thing with salami the strong meat smell covers your scent
I always thought that was an urban legend.
What did you use for your camera rig? Seems too steady for someone to be holding it without a steady cam. But I could be wrong
Great camera presence. Your comand of sentences are clear and to the point. Keep up the good work...
I've known about this trick for quite some time Japanese folk taught it to me I can put WD-40 on a Bear hook with no bait and still catch a fish
Good video, it helps to keep the water cleaner. Happy fishing.
chefgiovanni Now we know who is polluting out water ! LOL
Dont know why but I really like the sound of the sponge being cut lol. Great video and I think calling the manufacturer was a great idea.
I assume you're into asmr then
Where are you at? Where is this river ? Because I lived in a town that had a river that ran through it. And the river was names "Muddy River" so I'm just curious.. the town I lived in was in Overton, Nevada. In moapa valley
I have learned so much info from this sight thank you
Spray your frying pan with WD-40 instead. Keeps your fish from sticking to the pan.
😂😂😂
lol
so truth
I can't believe it's not pam
Hajahija
Curious question
. Let's say you do catch a fish using wd 40 on a bait. That the fish ate... would it be harmful to whoever eats that caught fish?
Any thoughts for what your doing to the water that you hope to catch fish from?
Thanks for the information kris I wouldn’t use it either because it’s harmful to the waters
Better to show than to tell, good video.
Could it be possible that the WD-40 works as a carrier when used on a bait? That it carries the scent of the bait to bring fish in? That could conceivably explain why there's so many accounts of it working but it failing to do anything when tested on its own
My question is if you would of set regular bait and gone back would you have cought anything
If you just came to this video, skip to 10:18
Thanks
Just read description. He says it don't work. No point in watching anything.
camera guy farted lmmfao
lmmfao
Trust me fisherman farts a lot. I dont really know why but once you get on the water all by yourself, you'd feel like to fart. :)
This was made to discourage the use of pollutants? How ridiculous! Any petroleum product in any quantity in any body of water is a negative. I am a keen fisherman with a healthy respect for the environment without being an enviro-freak. The waters and fish stocks are not promised for tomorrow. Even in my short life ( I am 51) I have seen good fishing grounds fished out, by amateur anglers with no respect for the environment. Far better to use natural baits and respect bag limits so we can go fishing tomorrow.
antonio betancourt There is no fish oil in WD 40 Here are the ingredients.51% Stoddard solvent (In 1953 this was the predominant cleaning fluid used by dry cleaners.)
25% liquefied petroleum gas (presumably as a propellant; carbon dioxide is now used instead to reduce WD-40's considerable flammability)
15+% mineral oil (light lubricating oil)
10-% inert ingredients
Robert Jones Thanks for your insight. I stand corrected I always thought it was fish oil..LOL'
Robert Jones.... Stoddard solvent also known as White spirit
Density: 700.00 kg/m³ Boiling point: 149°F (65°C) Classification: Volatile organic compound
Owing to the volatility and low bioavailability of its constituents, white spirit, although it is moderately toxic to aquatic organisms, is unlikely to present significant hazards to the environment
I was just wondering if I used it in my spooltek lure if the fish wouldn't like it..trying to keep the $20 dollar lure around for a bit..but since they might like it I guess that's cool
@11.25 What is that, that is in the water over his left shoulder that shadow that swi,s pass him
LOVE the hat. i have a few people that i would love to gift that to.
+Sethemiah thank you! They're available on my website at: www.muddyrivercatfishing.com
50 years ago, an old timer told me to wash my hands anytime I gassed up the boat or lantern, and I found out by touching the bait after touching petroleum, it stops the fish from biting. I sprayed my rusty baits with WD-40 once and it effectively stopped any hits, I dipped them in bait scent the rest of the trip, and fishing picked up, I hung all my baits in the dishwasher when I got home (much to my wife's dismay), and sprayed my reels off with starting fluid then applied a light coat of fish attractant. Oil and water don't mix, especially fishing water.
Jerry Collins I'm glad you see the point I'm trying to make in this video. Thanks!
muddyrivercatfishing I enjoy your videos
Is this a good test since you put it on a sponge opposed to bait. What if you did 10 with WD40 bait and 10 without?
I think that would be a little more conclusive.
This would be a much better test!
did you make them retractable fishing spools or can you already buy them like that? If you can let me know I would greatly appreciate it. Keep up the great fishing bud 👍
I was going to ask the same thing. I have never seen, or even heard of them.
You're a Great Guy, going to a lot of trouble to help people learn alittle something good.
Thank You, Kris, for your time and trouble, care and attention!
And, I'm sorry for any of these silly rednex who will insist on harrassing good people like you
who are so obviously really trying to make this world a better place.
And let me tell you, the world IS a better place just because YOU are in it!
And other Good Folks just like you.
+Christopher M Thank you for your kind words. I really appreciate it!
yea misleading people on fishing with spray lube
good thing he
didn't hear fishing with trash or old tires
Faith in humanity restored. Great video.
Fishing with pollutants isnt making the world a better place ... If you believe that then you are a waterhead !
I wonder what's gotta be next. Rectal suppositories? Here in Philly, I heard some anglers say that they work for Catfish. LOL. Tight lines from a Philly Multi-Species angler!
🤔
😂😂 best comment hands down I'm dying. 💀 No shit man. Wd 40 c'mon man. Has 3.4 mill views to 😂😂😂😂😭😭
Man, i watch this today, it is mid-end of 2022, and the guy in 2013 had the better camera than the most people now.
This man is keeping folks from wasting time and effort on wd-40! great video!
Thank you for dispelling this myth.
I've heard the same thing in my travels about WD-40. I use it for many many things, but never did it make sense to me to put it in the water.
My philosophy is simple, "we are what we eat eats" and I personally would not want to consume WD-40.
WD 40 is good to clean roof tar off hands clothes andtools
Kris, I arrived at your video completely out of the blue researching a breed of hogs I am looking to raise. Ended up watching your whole video. This is great; best youtube video I've seen in a while! Thanks for busting a myth and keeping oil out of the waterways. A lady recently told me to spray down my entire quad with WD-40... Hmm. I think I'll save my money for an oil change! I wanna come down there and go fishing with you. Cheers!
Tristan Banwell Thanks! I'm glad that you get my video.
I'm also brand new to fishing like I went fishing g for the first time a few weeks ago what are some good tips regarding reel drag
Becky R Ward you don’t want it to tight should be able to pull a little off the spool with your hand and the light lb test the less drag you should have
I grew up in El Paso and fished both Elephant Butte and Cabiallo on the Rio Grande , but never remembered seeing the reed beds that I see on your videos. I was wondering where they were located. how far north of Las Cruzses.
cru
*love this stuff been using it **enjoyable.fishing** recommend it’s for years..although it is starting to get a bit pricey. Used to be under $5.*
Very valuable video that makes a necessary point about some of our environmental responsibilities as outdoorsmen. Especially about following silly and downright absurd fishing claims. As always, great going, Kris! Thanks!
It works depending on your area. Up here in Virginia lots of people use it on the James river for flatheads. They spray a little bit inside of a dead chub then hook it through the gut cavity. I spent a whole week trying chubs hooked through the gut cavity and caught one fish. My cousin and 3 of his friends were using wd-40 in the same place and in 2 other spots and they came away with 17 fish total in one day
+ian “treejunkie101” martin Anecdotal testimony does not mean that it really works.
what is that swimming behind you at 11:20ish on your left?
i was about to comment something nasty but i change my mind at the end this is a great video
Home made soap cut in cube I wonder will that work on a cat fish thanks god bless
Lol funny you brought that up. Soap does work on blue cats
what was that at 11:27 on his left side swimming down river??
Hey ken drake here jus wanted to see how you set your pole up what line do u use how much lbs
Im glad i came across this video! Had a local fisherman tell me to use wd40. But not anymore, screw that! Thank you, big fan!!
10:20 - did a fish just swim by him?
Looks like it. Sad part is, it's probably a big fish, to. The looks like it's just the tip of the dorsal fin. Probably a 20 inch fish.
Haha, that's too bad. Would have been a nice catch.. >.
It's just a stick. @ 1080p at 10:21 you can see it original orientation of the stick which is left to right. Then it rotates 90 degrees while moving at the same speed. If it was a fish it would have caused a wake moving at that speed.
never mind, i think you're right. haha, 1080p makes a huge difference. But hey, thats one fast moving stick.
***** sorry sherlock
Nice video, I can't even imagine who the hell would believe anything like that would work.
Where do you get the line trigger that you were using
11:26 - Watch the water on the right side. Loch Ness Monster?
What the hell was that?
You can eat Garfish too! Garfish are eaten fried, baked, barbecued or smoked.
@ 10:21 was that a fish swimming by screen left?
The Sqoou Aliens
Yeah but a little one
The Sqoou I seen it too but I couldn't make out what it was and was fast too but was not moving ! I think it was a peace of wood in that fast current ! A wood fish ! LOL
The Sqoou Yea saw that, haha
11:min & 27 secs in, it looks like a fish swam by on the right side of the video. Great video. Happy fishing!
Excellent Vid! Won't be using it as a bait. Well Done. Reguards from across the pond (Essex in England.) Wishing You Tight Lines my Friend. Gerard.
Hey I certainly appreciate your video. it is a petroleum based product most definitely. it's certainly a shame that you had to pollute your favorite fishing fishing spot a little to prove a point but your point is well taken and I hope many people watch this for years to come and do not do stupid things to help them catch fish and destroy the habitat in doing so just saying thank you for your efforts and bringing this to us keep up the good work
+David Schultz Thanks David!
I was just thinking that too!!!
David Schultz
David Schultz the original formula for WD 40 was banana oil and coconut oil ...the sceintist who developed it mixed allot of chemicals and oils to try to find the best water displacement formula to prevent missiles in silos from rusting during the cold war....water displacement formula#40 was coconut oil and banana oil...was the best formula...nowadays though Wd40 has petroleum and synthetic oils because it makes it cheaper, but of course the makers won't tell you that banana oil and coconut oil is more effective...now it's not WD40 it's WD297 but they won't tell you that...if you find a pre 1993 can of WD40 it will work...
Matt Luxner is that true? I can't find any information that says wd40 was made from coconut oil and banana oil.
Where did you learn this?
many better baits out there than this poison my brother.
Wd40 isn't a poison wd40 was made for nasa it's a water detergant #40
Very well done video. Your sponges clearly had been in that water a bit. Good enough for me! Not sure why anything would want to eat that stuff.
Very interesting ! Thanks ! I'm not a fisherman but enjoy your videos ! God bless you !!😁👍
Thank you for the great information, I have heard the same tails as you and have used it from time to time. With the answers you recieved from WD-40 I will no longer be using it, my boat engine spews more harmful exhaust in the water than a few sprays of this water dislocator but why infect the environment with even more!!!
Well, back in my early year's in the 80's all my fishing buddies swore by it and I say nothang beats the good ole' tobaccy juice!
Back in the 80's all your friends must have been idiots. Read the can. Its toxic. Why would you poison the water and the fish you are going to eat?
Well my friend lastdollarfilms back in the 80's we were just kids and didn't know any better like we do today. Yes, it's toxic just like the shelf food that's probably sitting in your cabinets that you fix almost every night for dinner or the diet cola that you drink. Don't most of the river's that flow here in the United States flood out because of the run off coming from most roads...just think about all the motor oil, anti-freeze etc that pollute the rivers as well? I really don't think a little bit of a water based formula would do much harm as run off rain would. Think about it my friend and have damn fine day! ;)
lastdollarfilms
I guess you aren't aware of the fact, or don't want admit, that for decades, 2-stroke outboard engines leaked ton's of oil and gasoline through their exhaust systems, into rivers and lakes, with no apparent danger to the waters, or the people who ate fish from them...
Do you really believe that a quick spritz of W.D 40 on a thumbnail-sized sponge is going to cause more damage, or are you just spewing some of that wild, exaggerated environmentalist propaganda?
The fish swims in a lake at a distance from a gas/oil leaking engine and by the time it gets to them its diluted. Feeding the crap to the fish is a little different so yeah there is a difference.
lastdollarfilms
According to every biological study I've read, the only way that the flesh of a fish is likely to be contaminated, is through long term immersion or ingestion; even so, most fish who come from heavily polluted waters, are adjudged to be safe to consume in limited quantities, which is determined on a parts-per-million basis...
I have never used this product for this particular application, but would have absolutely no qualms about do so, or consuming a fish caught with it...
Is it possible that using WD40 with some types of bait attracts fish? Maybe it "amplifies" the scent of the bait or something.
what is that u put the bait on?
Why so many dislikes? Was a great informative video.
ikr
+Mr.Tumbleweed yeah. With out wildlife how would you fish. And he said he doesn't use these harmful products so obviously that not why...
Colin Soileau Okay, lets try typing your sentence so someone can understand wtf youre trying to say, thanks. To be clear, you could empty that entire can into that lake, not that you should, but theres so much water that it would dilute it to basically nothing. So such a low PPM, its basically non-existent. Maybe you didnt know that.
+Mr.Tumbleweed thats what you made it sound like.
Colin Soileau ...?!
Anyone saw that fish to the right at 11:27?
Nah~ you're just special.
Yep it was moving
That was a snake, or an eel
Prob.someone added it to the footage, idk how,but they can do that
These thumbs downers obviously didnt watch and realize you dont condone using WD becuase for one, it doesnt work and two you dont like using un-natural bait in your water. This video should decrease the amount of WD in the water, thus making for cleaner waters. Great demonstration sir!
what if when WD is used on a bait, its oil, and oil can have a effect on the bait, maybe it causes the bait to release more of its juice, cause oil is heavier than water, so it soaks into the bait, expelling the juices from the bait, causing the smell on the water being much stronger. Just thoughts lol no idea. Tell me what you think about this theory.
Take a can of liver flavored dog food. Dent in the sides so you can tie a rope around it with no worries of it coming off. Take the old style can openers (triangle shape on the end) and poke a few SMALL holes around the top of the can. Toss it out and go home. Come back 2 days later and pull in the rope with the can and cast liver out on a hook to the same area the can was in. You will nail catfish and bullhead all evening long.
+tokiesgalore This sounds like a good idea. I'll give it a try.
+David Haworth Sounds like chummin.... Where's the sport??
"goldhead56" if you want sport buy a fly rod and fish for trout, with flies, in a stream. If you want catfish for dinner use this method.
+David Haworth What about crappy? chum the waters and have a heyday?? No sport no thanks
+R. “goldhead56” Schulz Like I said before, If you want sport fishing, fly fish with artificial flies for catch and release trout. If you want to eat crappy, chum.and use live bait.
who knew that there would be so many racial and ignorant KEYBOARD WARRIORS on a video that is teaching people not to use WD-40 for fishing, as it will cause harm to the envirnment....just sad man.
not just the envirnment WD-40 contains Benzine, My friend is dying of Lukemia and found out the hard way
I am so glad to see somebody post a video that has real results. It was a little too long for my tastes ..but..kudos to this guy for not faking his results.
I tried this. I was on the boat and sprayed it on my worm and instantly over 20 catfish jumped into my boat and were all fighting each other over the worm with the wd40 on it. they would not touch the other worms.
To bad people are ignorant and didn't even bother to listen to you or watch it all the way through. Great video man sorry about the hate.
Yes, I have used it my friend. Works great. The problem is the chemicals in it. Some claim it's only fish oil like you said,,
true, it's not fish oil,, like you said..Anyway I got a lot of trouts using wd-40,,,the problem is it is full of chemicals so I quit...
If your bait is fresh and alive,,, no brainer,,, it works better and is not poison...some use frozen or dried, (dead bait),,etc...not as good.
Don't poison yourself and the family. It's not worth it. Go natural like I said fresh, (live bait),,,, top of the world!!! No problem.
Your video was very detailed looked really nice...
what river in what state are you located?
Fantastic qualitative experiment. It may be detailed, but that is well documented. WD40 should pay for your time and effort. Thanks a lot.
I like the dog 😀
I have caught catfish on a piece of cloth on a hook soaked with WD-40 when they wouldn't bite on anything else we had to use for bait. I was younger and more foolish and did not consider the environmental consequences. If they didn't hit it immediately on casting it into the water, we had to reel back in and reapply the WD-40.
to stupid to read the poison warning on the can?
lastdollarfilms Well, yeah! I believe I stated that I did this when I was younger and more foolish. As a young man, I was to stupid to know better than to do a lot of things that common sense would have prevented me from doing. Ride motorcycles at breakneck speeds. Pour gunpowder into a smoking hole. Chase a wounded rattlesnake through tall grass. Confront a burglar while half dressed and armed with only a pocket knife. I do know from my stupid actions that you can catch catfish on a rag soaked with WD-40. This was before cell phone technology gave us video capability all the time so I don't have video proof.
lastdollarfilms Yeah, I agree.Sounds like a lie anyway. Fish don't like fabrics! :P
Aron Zivo I wouldn't believe it, either if I hadn't seen it.
phlodel My words exactly :)
what is swimming to the right of the boat at 11:27?
I've tried putting ed on my bait, I thought' what the hell? They aren't biting anyway.'
So, yeah, I finally caught a fish. Idk if it was the bait or the spray
THANK YOU for pointing out how WD-40 does nothing but pollute the water.
I was gonna point this out myself ;) :D
Use something else that doesn't pollute the water! Use like Koolaid or pour baking soda on your lure. Whatever you think adds the magic but don't pollute the water.
Thomas Nozal read the description ffs
Omg give me a damn break
Even just the little extra effort of calling the actual company and asking them.. most “fishing youtubers” wouldn’t even put that much effort into vomiting another video out for content. I appreciate this man
cant be any worse than a 2 stoke boat motor, it releases oil into the water through the exhaust
Thanks for doing the experiment I've always wanted to try. The way I heard it was that they used oil/water that gathers in the bilge area. But WD-40 is a good test too. I've watched a few of your videos now and just subscribed.
I also gathered something else after reading everyone's comments:
1. People are stupid.
2. Go to 1,
You handle trools well, Cheers :)
WD-40 stands for: Water Displacement Compound 40. If you spray it on a moving bass lure it allows the fish to find the lure easier because of the amount of water displacement.
is this in Maryland? I go crabbing a lot and people say the same thing about wd40
What part of New Mexico? I'm in Otero county.
Oh my god! How did the thing get over a million hits? this dude is so boring I fell asleep
lol
+Phil Vanelli It's actually kind of relaxing to me
+Phil Vanelli Because people want to see if they can fish with wd 40
Probably didn't work because its a little like oil, and I didn't know fish to be attracted to poison... And you even say at the end don't use pollutants... Well? Why did you then?
He used the pollutants so 193.984 other people won't bother to try them.
Live in Idaho, and fish for trout. I am a mechanic, am used to having my hands in all kinds of fuel and grease. When I go fishing I put WD 40 on bait to mask scent from my hands. When I use this I catch fish. Been using this method for years.
grammaidaho How the hell much Doo-Da (my term) to these, peeps think you use anyway? Just a spritz, right? And what about that petrol residue coming out the boat motor? Still does that? What about hand lotion, sunscreen during a swim, bath? Last thing endangering the enviro is DooDa used while fishing.
Kissyourarmadillotoday Laura so your thoughts on the subject are its ok to pollute more because we already pollute? Genius
I see some jack ass deleted comments because they made to much sense. Idiots.
I heard it was fish oil also so thanks for clearing that up. also I had a fish off with a friend , I used rubber worms with the wd and he used rubber worms without. he caught more by far as if the wd scarred them away ..
You should put one with regular bait close to it and one with the WD-40 and find out if they're biting that day or they just don't like the WD-40.
I swear I was watching burn out videos then fixing scratches with wd40 and now I am here....oh RUclips you have done it again lol
+Evan Sakeeb I was watching how to refill spray cans with compressor when suddenly IT happened. After 5 mins of watching this I was like "What the fack???"
While everyone is so Eco-friendly! The oil coming out the exhaust of outboard motors is more pollutant to the environment than a couple of squirts of WD-40!
Because the boat motor is necessary but spraying non burned oil as 'fish bait' isnt. It only takes a small amount of oil to contaninate 1000s gals of water
i think it was power bait but I could be wrong but I heard it started by a guy throwing his coffee grounds over the side of his boat n noticed bass were coming to eat the grounds so he started balling up the bait on his hook
Had heard it was Preperation H. It has fish oil in it. But I agree about the pollutant issue, so I never tried it. Have heard about it for many years, though. Nice work.
