- In this episode onboard our LIVE ABOARD NARROWBOAT we experience an eventful but typical BOAT LIFE day. Coping with the ever growing duck weed problem along the canals, fierce locks, nearly falling overboard and finally difficult moorings. We still love our LIVE ABOARD LIFESTYLE on our TINY FLOATING HOME. One event causes us a bit more of problem which takes us a while to resolve, just one of the perils of BOAT LIFE on the BRITISH CANALS & RIVERS.
At the end of day we always get moored and enjoyed reliving the event of the day. Today did prove to be a really interesting day on our TINY FLOATING HOME!!
Season 1 | Episode 38

I have complained to the people who make avocados 🥑, I keep winning the same toy, I have a whole draw full of wooden balls.
Hi Ian.
Good joke my friend! And I thought I was the funny one. Anytime you feel like sharing a funny with us please do. I love a laugh! Take care Ian and thanks again. 🥲❤️
No way!! I have the exact same problem no matter how many times I hope for a puzzle I to get the wooden ball😉
That bloody wooden ball seems to be in all of them Rikki!
Why would you eat something has a wooden ball in the middle and tastes of nothing! Jaq loves them.. 😔❤️
I’m wondering why the damaged or partially sinking boats are not removed from the waterways? Is it up to the boat owners or the waterways management. Just curious. It seems dangerous to just leave them to rot. Thank you for another lovely video.
Boaters are encouraged to report sunken vessels. Mind you, they’re not very quick to respond.
Innuendo after innuendo. Ropes and brownie points. Hilarious!
Hi there and thanks for watching. Yes there are so many sunken and abandoned boats. It’s such a shame, they would all make amazing holiday boats or homes for people. We love your comments keep them coming 🙏
It must be so difficult for CRT to keep on top of it, never mind the cost of it. Thanks for your comments 😀
So pleased you enjoyed the vlog. One thing the Captain and I do is make each other laugh. 😄
I'm so happy I've found your channel!! What a lovely couple you are 😍 I'm waiting to complete on the sale of my flat then I'm heading out to buy a canal boat and take to the cut as a solo female continous cruiser. Some people have said I'm mad because I'm too old (I'm 55! And a fit and healthy old bird at that so sod 'em!) and crazy to be giving up my bricks and mortar. But I don't look at what I'm giving up, I look at what I'm going to gain. Life isn't about accumulating property and things, it's about making memories via our experiences so I'm going to gain plenty! Anyhoo, I've learned a lot from watching a few of your vlogs already so thank you! Off to watch some more. Hugs to you both. Tracy 🙏
Hi T.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a comment.
Wow. You are a brave lady! How exciting. You have great plan which you’ll love no doubt.
There are many solo female boaters who enjoy the canal life. We are all one big happy family in the main and people will always help when needed.
We hope you pick up some handy info via our channel which may help with your exciting new venture. Good luck from us both T. Take care. 😜❤️
@@cruisingontheborder thanks guys! 😊 😍
What a great comment👍🏾 I wish you all the best and hope your dreams of buying a river boat and cruising the canals comes true… I used to watch Foxes afloat and got addicted to watching British🇬🇧 canal videos, there’s just something magical about it all…. Good luck T from NZ🇳🇿
👍❤️
@@MMCPN hey 👋 Thanks so much for that lovely comment!! Another dream is to visit NZ one day. Stunning country and very few people which oddly appeals to this committed introvert!
All the best Ricki. Tracy ☺️
Hi Both countryside much nicer than citys
Hi Patricia.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a comment.
Yes we prefer the countryside to the city but we did like being in London. It was a real experience!
👍❤️
Hello, I've watched a few of your videos and haven't noticed it but, is there any back story on you guys that I missed? Like how you started out with the purchase of the narrowboat, your first adventure after you bought it, where you started from.... I realize social media can be a mine field to navigate so I wouldn't blame you for not getting too comfortable but, I was curious about your lives before all of this as well.
I have really enjoyed the videos I've watched so far and look forward to watching more. Thanks.
Hi Roger.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a comment.
We have indeed got a back story and we have a video entitled just that in the can. We will release it soon.
Take care Roger and thanks again.
Loving your videos. I have been binge-watching for some days now.
They are both facinating and inspiring.
Thank you for taking us along on your travels.
Glad you like them! You are so welcome 🙏 look forward to reading you other comments xx
THUMBS UP " -- NICE VIDEO.
Thank you very much!
That was a lovely stretch of the canal, that deep lock gave me a funny feeling I'm not keen on those deep locks, there were a lot on the Manchester Ship Canal Tour from Manchester to Liverpool I went on. Some were quite scary 😮. I find your videos very interesting thank you 😊😊😊
Glad you enjoyed it Fiona and thanks of the lovely comments and information.
🥑 mush it... don't smush it.... 🥑
😂😂😂😂😂Girl'z 😅😅😅😅😅
Hi.
Thanks for your comment.
Mush, Smush, bash, batter, totally destroy! They are all things I’ve done with Jaq’s avocado.. I’m not the best prepper!! She seems to like it still though..
🤣🤣👍❤️
Another great Video Michael and Jacqui . I think you need a kind of snow plough blade on the front of your narrow boat that , to push the weed to one side 🤔.....😉👍
Agree with you Jerry, it was so thick in places. We tried pushing it to one side with the barge pole but it was way too heavy!! Thanks for watching 👍
With regards to the weeds across the canal, couldn't you have stood at the front of the boat and used a pole to push/sweep it to one side before driving through it? Never driven a barge so have no idea myself.
Hi Diane.
We did try with tut pole and boat hook but the weed was so heavy it was impossible to move. 👍❤️
Does the propeller have a cage around it to stop big debris from hitting the propeller? The surf ribs do in Aus.
Hi.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a comment.
We don’t have a cage around our screw sadly but it’s not very often we get things around it and the weed hatch is easy access without getting in the water! 👍❤️
So with all this weed in the river what does the canal and river fees actually go on 🤔.
Hi Tony. Great question 👍 thanks for taking the time to leave us a comment. We love reading and answering them all. The weed is a massive problem and we’re sure a costly one at that. We wouldn’t like to have to manage the CRT budget, a huge job. J & M 🙏
In my honest opinion, the best thing to do with an avocado, is bin it 🤢🤢lol
Hi Diane.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a comment.
I’m with you!! Bin it.. but I was kind to my wife and sorted the horrid thing out for her. 😂👍❤️
Them weeds only grow and flourish in toxic and poluted water due lack of oxygen. I am surprised as that happening in flowing waterways.😢😮😢.
Great Vlog yet again. My favourite brekky smashed avocado on sourdough with a hint of chilli 😃 Trev would have been equally bemused as to how to prepare an avocado 😂. Pennywort is dreadful really hard to contend with. Totally agree with Michael regarding the towpaths, much as we loved the Avon and Thames last summer, I like a morning walk along the towpath with Young Ralf, a couple of miles and hop on at a bridge. Xx
Hi both.
You girls seem to favour the avocado more than the boys! I’ll bet Trev is proud of me for ‘smashing’ the thing!
And… I got a brownie point! 😂👍❤️
Hahaha Michael he certainly did 😃
I've never eaten avocado in my life. I have family in Arizona and they love them. They can't believe that I've never tried one.
Hi James,
I’m with you in the avocado. Jaq loves them but I’m not a fan. At least I managed to deal with it correctly and got a brownie point! 👍❤️
All in all that was a pleasant day … although not without its impediments. Looked up the significance of your watercraft’s name. Enjoyed that. The weather was appreciably calm much like the protagonists of this post. There’s something to be said about charming well adjusted adults might I add.
Veuillez s.-v.-p. agréer, mes chers Narrowboaters, l’expression de mes salutations les plus sincères.
Cheers

Hello to Canada, how lovely to hear from you and in French as well. Merci beaucoup!! x Yes we have heard many different options for the BR name - one is it could be named after a 1960's motor racing team - incredible.
@@cruisingontheborder Now the racing team I knew nothing of… Cheers ..
Will be watching.
All the best !
@presspound7358 no we didn’t either… amazing what you learn isn’t it 😀
Thank you!
Hi there 😀 lovely to hear from you and thank you so much for watching. Keep the comments coming, we love reading them all and we respond personally to all of them. 🙏
Salt black pepper and a little squeeze of fresh lemon on that avocado…. Delish ! From one hipster to another 😁❤️🥑
Hi.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a comment.
Thanks for your avocado advice. I’ll make sure I use your recipe next time I do avocado (if you ‘do’ avocados??) for Jaq.. I fear she’ll go full hipster though if she eats many more! 😂😂❤️
@@cruisingontheborder 🤣🤣
Are there perhaps any speed traps ahead on the canals...for those who love speed... 😊😅😂
Too much diesel engine noise !
Hi Colin,
Sadly the narrowboats can be slightly noisy boats. The engine is located directly below our aft deck which is where we have to do a lot of our pieces to camera. Our engine is soundproofed also. We are sorry you thought there was too much engine noise. 👍
Oh my goodness. Recognized this stretch having walked from the Aylesbury basin all the way to Paddington back in 2021. Took 3 days but loved every second. Was so nice to come across your channel.
Hi.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a comment.
Your walk must have begun great! How long did it take you? It’s a nice stretch that we featured in the video. We post a new vid every Wednesday so you’ll probs see more of your route coming up. 👍❤️
@@cruisingontheborder ill keep an eye out for the next video. The walk took me 3 days. Did it September 2021. Great experience and my then 50 year old carcass managed it well enough!!
Congrats on the walk! Not sure my body would hold out for such a walk. Jaq would be fine with it but not me!
Thanks again. ❤️👍
Hi Guys im really enjoying your vlogs on your adventures along the canal networks,

Great vlog! Once hired a boat without a weed hatch! Guess who got into the water to cut electrical cable and nylon tights from round the prop!! There must be easier ways to earn a drink from one's mates😀😀
Hi
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a comment.
Sounds like you drew the short straw sadly! Glad I only got my arms wet though! 🤣👍❤️
Avocado. Have you tried it with balsamic vinegar? Mmm. Cracking vlog as ever guys. Have a good one.
Hi again great to hear from you. No I’ve not tried balsamic, but will definitely do now, great recommendation 🙏. So pleased you enjoyed it, we love putting them together.
The canal locks look in a generally poor state when compared with the Thames. Why do you think this is?
Hi Paul.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a comment.
We agree about the state of the locks compared to the Thames locks.
We guess it’s due to a lack of funds by CRT as opposed to the separate funding via licence fees on the Thames.
Also mainly steel boats on the canals v a lot or GRP on the river meaning less damage.
Thanks again Paul.
What an interesting passage. A little bit of everything. So glad you won the battle of the avocado.
Looks a very peaceful canal even though the debris is in high quantity.
Hi.
Glad you liked the episode. It was certainly and day full on incidents!
My battle with the avocado won me a brownie point so all good! Lots more videos coming up every Wednesday!
Take care 👍❤️
Wow a packed vlog this week I'm with Mike cheese on toast 😋 yummy xx
Hi David.
Thanks for the cheese support! We need to fight the good fight against these hipsters! 😂😂

A little salt and black pepper mixed in with that smashed avoid on toast makes for a very nice treat.
Hi Tom thank you so much for your great comment. Jackie loves her avocados, super healthy and so many different taste options. We just wish we’d had Tabasco on board! Hope you continue to watch we’ve lots more brilliant footage coming.

A little salt and lemon juice on the avocado.
Hi Ruth thank you for the lovely comment, I’ve tried that combo. Another viewer has recommended balsamic vinegar have you tried that. I’m definitely going to. Hope you keep enjoying, do drop us comments we love hearing from everyone. 😀
Liked the hands to ramming/riding off stations
Hi
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a comment.
That’s a phrase i used when I was in the RN! (Hands to) maybe your ex Navy yourself? The ramming stations call was very much needed!
Thanks again and take care 👍❤️
@@cruisingontheborder Was on Gurkha , with you, its Kevan TAS mess
Hi Shippers!!
I thought it must be you pal.
I knew only an ex navy lad would know such a phrase!
Great to hear from you. Glad your liking our channel. We need to get two funnels on Border Reiver to pay due respect to good old HMS Gurkha. Bless her!
Take care Kevan.

Certainly! 👍❤️
That's the first time I've ever heard harefield described as tranquil,I fish that stretch of canal a lot....
Hi John.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a comment.
Inside knowledge I guess. We were going in what our canal map book told us. I guess I’m comparison to the Paddington arm it was kind of tranquil. 🤣👍
