MANS4ON Dude it's a telecaster that cost easily over a grand, and considering it's custom made. Also thousands of dollars in amps and pedals goes far, without good shit, you wouldn't sound like that all. He's not terrible, but definetly not the best.
Alister Shade you dont need a lot of pedals but you need decent qualty equipment. Any real guitarist knows playing on low end squiers and a shitty 20 watt combo amp hinders you. Sure a 5000 dollar tube amp and a 2000 dollar fender doesnt make you better at guitar but it sure as hell makes you sound better if you can already play well. I think decent equipment is a necessity in being a good musician. Practice all you want read as much theory as you can but your 200 dollar squier will sound like garbage with your "high quality" playing. Ps: by decent equipment im talking about the mid price range (600-1000) which is definitely affordable if youre dedicated and employed.
John doesn't use a lot of pedals, he uses maybe three at his shows, and I think one of them is turned off. I use more pedals than he does, but he gets the effects that he wants from the way he plays and his technique. In this video, it sounds like he may be using a Whammy pedal, but nothing more, other than maybe an overdrive/distortion. As far as decent equipment goes, a master guitarist can polish a turd and make it shine. I was fortunate enough to see Jeff Healey play at an outdoor venue with Johnny Winter. The stage was just a couple of steps, up onto a cement 'stage". and I was able to stand a few feet from Jeff as he ripped through his incredible show. He was using a VHT Bulldog amp and maybe a Bogner the time, which are thousands of dollars each, but for his guitar he used 3 Squier Strats that night. A white one, a black one, and I think there was a sunburst one that sat on a stand as a backup. He sounded absolutely incredible!! His tone was some of the best that I've ever heard, right up there close to the way Robin Trower sounds. Jeff walked all over the stage and I thought for sure that he was going to walk into me and off the stage. lol (Jeff was blind for anyone who doesn't know who he was. He was in the movie Roadhouse) He dropped the black guitar right in front of me during a really ripping song that he was doing. It had a tremelo system and he was stepping on it, going crazy . When he picked it back up, it was still in tune and I felt sorry for that guitar. lol So his cheapo Squier guitars sounded great, but it was because of the hand of the player. After that, i started noticing a lot of metal bands using Epiphone guitars to get their sound. I watched and interview with someone, maybe one of the guys from Exodus or Heathen, who said that using a $300 Epiphone gave them the metal sound that the Gibson version would not do, without changing the electronics.
Very cool. Now, I'm heading over to playthisriff.com, and I'll be able to play just like him. It'll take a little practice. So, in about a thousand years, I'll be able to play that solo. Rock and Roll stardom - here I come.

Let alone appreciate the hours spent to acquire those skill I've always been fascinated by players like this and quite frankly a lot of the "shredders" I know. We all started playing because we liked, no... loved music. Somewhere along the line though players get lost in the technical side and ultimately become jaded against the very music which inspired them to play in the first place. Once lost they lose all concept of what music should be. In my opinion music has to be listenable and secondly it should convey or trigger emotions be they good or bad or in between. This guys good but the only people who care are not the ones who are gonna be there for all his concerts, hell they might not even buy his album. Songwriting first, this stuff last.
