As an Indian, thanks for covering these movies Cecil. I would recommend Bramayugam (2023) and Bhoothakaalam (2022). both are excellent psychological horror movies.
My copies of Overlord and The Ruins came in. Haven't watched Overlords yet, but did watch The Ruins at a friend's house last night who's big into horror movies, and she liked it quiet a bit, so big thank you on her behalf.
Thanks for the list, Cecil. I haven't seen many Bollywood films, so it's nice to have a list to work from. I remember seeing a "Bollywood slasher" that was 2 hours and 40 minutes long. I think it was a TV mini-series edited down. I swear you could have cut 90 minutes, and it wouldn't have affected the plot or kill count.
About 15 years ago when I first was getting into Bollywood, I was working with a girl from there who explained it to me. Essentially (this is the super short version) couples in India don't go to the movies often, so when they do they want a full experience. This is why the movies usually have these lavish dance numbers and a big run time. Its a cultural thing where they want the longer productions, while outside of there audiences want tighter edits and aren't super big with musicals. Some of them are so good that they cross the cultural boundries and become hits outside of there but its not the norm. (and it shouldn't be) One of the things I like about Bollywood films is they are trying to please their audience first and foremost. I think too many American films suffer because they try to please everyone and end up pleasing no one.
@@GoodBadFlicks Thanks for the recap, Cecil. I agree that trying to make films that appeal to everyone on the planet usually doesn't work. Bollywood is its own culturally unique thing and that is what makes it special.
Cecil, thanks for these Bollywood horror recommendations. I haven't seen a lot of Bollywood films, but I'm glad to find they have a thriving horror movie industry. Hope to see some of these come to US streaming so we can enjoy them over here!
Majority Bollywood horror movies are crap. Lame make up and jumpscares. However, there's one movie from the early 90's called Raat (1992) A south indian film.
I'm not usually into modern Bollywood films but Ragni MMS 2 and Pari look pretty interesting. And for now on every Time I see a zombie or ghostly enemy on a horror videogame, I will tell them "Shut up, you rascal"😂
Thank you for showcasing these Bollywood gems for those of us who've not seen them and/or only have a small familiarity with Bollywood/Indian flicks! I have yet to see any horror from Bollywood. Only stuff I've seen is more of the action flicks like Singham and Sooryavanshi (can't wait to see the rest of those Indian Police flicks too...if I can find them streaming or something somewhere..)
My all time favorite Bollywood Horror flick is RAAZ (2002), it's a remake of " What lies beneath. " but is way enjoyable.i highly recommend it. also I FREAKING LOVE " Darna Mana Hai "
I’ve never heard of Sunny Leone, and wouldn’t necessarily look up her previous work, but my goodness, she is eye wateringly gorgeous from what Cecil showed of her. I wasn’t aware they made humans that beautiful.
Great video Cecil. As someone who has recently been getting into Bollywood this has been a refreshing video for me. Also may I add "Shhh!" to your list?
I worked in a cinema for about 13 years. We played Bollywood on semi regular basis. Mainly we shown the traditional song and dance ones, but did show the, how do I word it, the more normal type of films. These never seem to go down well. The traditional films would sell out, every time. When we showed a more normal style film, maybe as few a ten would see them.
When cinema reached masses in India somewhere around 1950s, there were no theatres in towns and villages. There was something called "Touring Talkies" like circus. A small crew with a projector and the film reel would come once in 3-4 months hopping villages and announce the screening time, put up posters. They would tie a white cloth in an open field and people would sit on both sides. People would really get into the movie and wished it would last as long as it can, because nobody knew when the Talkies would come next to their village. With enough songs and dance numbers, the audiences would get their fill. Song and dance evolved, but it remained a permanent fixture in Indian movies. (I say Indian because there are a minimum of 18 official languages and 7 different major film industries).
I have to admit I love the straight rip offs of American films. I also like seeing their attempts to replicate scenes and practical special effects, the lower the budget the better. If you haven't seen it yet the Bollywood Thriller video clip a real treat.
Enthiran is the only Bollywood film Ive seen. Its an interesting combination of The Terminator, The Matrix, and what Ive heard is the stereotypical of Bollywood films, a musical number.
Tumbbad flopped very hard when it first released in India, but it gained a cult following over the years which prompted its re-release last month and they are making a sequel slated for 2025. Fingers crossed it doesn't catch sequalitis 🤞🤞
Since "Bollywood" is usually referred to commercial Hindi cinema, Tumbbad doesn't qualify as a Bollywood film but is an independent production. Maybe he will mention Tumbbad in some other video.
'Ragni MMS' actually sounds more like 'Vacancy' MIXED with 'Paranormal Activity'. And that second one sounds very similar to Giallo. Makes me wonder if "Indian Giallo" is an actual sub-genre... =\
Speaking of having variety, I'd recommend that you check out Demi Moore's new film, "The Substance." If you like body-horror in vain of "The Fly," you might find it interesting.
I generally HATE Bollywood films--yet Pari was freaking AWESOME. And I've got to admit, Enthiran is completely hilarious! I'd never heard of Ragini MMS before, though, but I need to check that out now, as it sounds right up my alley. I still won't watch anything with musical numbers, though...with the exception of Enthiran, of course!
Good video, but I have a request: could you please do one on European horror? Outside of the Brits and Italians, the rest of the continent is pretty much ignored.
Stree 1-2 and Pari are on Amazon Prime. (with subs) Ragini MMS 1-2 were streaming on...I think it was Netflix when I saw them but not anymore. Darna I was able to pair up with subs I found. Lots of these end up coming and going on streaming services so check them out from time to time.
Have you checked the older Indian horror films like the ones produced by the Ramsey Borthers? Also, I highly recommend vintage Thai and Indonesian horror as well! There's this Thai one called Ghost Money (1981) which I say is worth checking out!
Thank you so much for bringing indian horror movies to light. Out of these 5 my favourite is ragni MMS and pari, rest are "meh" for me. And if you really like story driven horror movie than watch "tumbad" one of my favourite horror movie from recent time. It's a folk horror movie. I think? Honestly, I'm a big horror fan have watched sickest of them all and disturbing one too but in compare to other countries horror movies indian horror movies are very Tame and boring sometimes and sometimes they such rip off scenes from the original movies in the mix which make me feel so off. But yet there are very good horror movies out there from Bollywood goes back to 60s and 70s.
This was a nice glimpse of modern Bollyhorror. Show some really cheesy ones from the 90's and people will see just how bad we can make them. Not just cheap but some horrible rip-offs.
They do exist! I think as their industry evolves it will become a little more common. The musical elements will never go away completely, thats a cultural thing, but there will be some films that go against the grain and don't put them in there.
May have to look these up. I do not like Bollywood\Indian* films, as they tend to be far to long, and I cant stand the musical numbers. BUT....RRR is one of the most entertaining films i have seen in my life. Its over 3 hours but does not drag. I even stayed for the musical number in the credit. Watch it. *RRR is Tollywood apprently, but to most of the world its all Bollywood if comes from India.
Not necessarily. As an Indian who doesn't exactly love bollywood (the Hindi language films), I found my calling in Mollywood which are Malayalam language films. There is no singing and dancing in them and the sole focus is on themes and characters.
Stree 1-2 and Pari are both on Amazon Prime. Darna Mana Hai and Ragini MMS 2 are both on RUclips but without subs. However, the average viewer should be able to find them out there. The only one that isn't currently available anywhere is the original Ragini MMS.
If you are getting into Telugu movies, my horror recommendation would be Masooda (2023). its a small budget movie but the atmosphere they set up is creepy and interesting.
