Squarepusher is the greatest living musician. He is a master of electro, jazz, IDM, dnb and the bass guitar. His music is full of energy, emotion and meaning. I wish Charlie Parker and Squarepusher could've made an album - words can't say how good that could've been.
ive been listening to daft punk and squarepusher for a long time, they are equally great, daft punk and squarepusher are still pumpin out excellent music.
It's pretty Daft Punk-y. Repetitive structure, catchy riff, rock music elements, vocoder vocals. It's reminiscent of Aerodynamic or tracks off Human After All.
@@edgeofvision while this guy has 3,45667576 more talent than all of them 2 combined. and he doesn't need to use his money and invite some old mushroom pop rockers from 1940's to prove he's real.
@Dwaggysnaxx Think before pressing those keys...Tom is playing a Musicman Sabre, he also plays custom Zoot basses, hes also known for playing fretless Fender Jazz basses...now we've established who knows what they're saying; he appears at 0.34, 1.28, 1.41, 1.56(with a pick in hand!), 2.05, 2.16, 2.27, 2.38 and 4.00 with a six string electric guitar. Have another look....
For my money, this new album is genius. Squarepusher, kinda like AFX, has made a career out of raising a middle finger to expectations of any kind. Even on earlier albums, for every acid drill n bass track, you'd get another that was him noodling around on his guitar for ten minutes while sampling farm animal noises. People lacking a sense of irony may have trouble with it, but oh well.
@acousticmanland Yes...i did check that out. Im just a bit cynical to the idea that 4 other young, unknown musicians playing with Squarepusher don't want their identity revealed-i'd want the world to know my name if i was in that position.....It could be anyone under that helmet though, im not that foolish-i just noticed its the same guitar in this video that is directly behind the drummers head in the Gaurdian session. It stood out to me straight away...
@ruhaidai we will find out who they are some day, for the moment it makes perfect sense for them to remain anon, Firstly its a squarepusher project, its a way for him to work on his project without the external pressure of having to comply with the other aritsts, and gives the others the freedom to experiment. I highly doubt they are unkown (implied they might be, might not be), i think most would work with him, anon or not, and eventually we will know them, win win.
@acousticmanland Yeh it may be a bit over cynical, i agree. I also agree that this sounds great irrespective of what musicians are playing on track-Cryptic Motion is fantastic too! I'll look forward to seeing him again and hopefully with a band behind him!
@AmourSynthetique Yeah, I'll agree on that. My comment was written in anger and may have skewed too much towards dissing Daft Punk instead of those members of the music media who are making these ridiculous and unfounded statements about the similarities in question. I like Daft Punk very much, and what you say about their progression is true. I retract that part of my comment (though not the others by a long shot).
Wishing this band all the best. In my opinion this beats most modern day commercial music hands down. Ok it's not the 'old' squarepusher we know and love, but I respect this more than just some subtle iterations on what he's already done, which in itself is a lot. That makes this all the more interesting to me. Artistic exploration in a different way to before..? Nothing wrong with that...
Just when I feel bored of or disgruntled with the voluntary stagnation in British music these days, along comes Mr Jenkinson to remind us all again of his, and I use this word sparingly, 'genius'. I love the "mix" of influences on the Shobaleader One 'project' album. i hardly think you can call it "selling out". If anything, it's reinforcing the freeform nature of his work in it's essence. So much better than 99.99% of "dance" music at the moment for sure
every artist has ups and downs, but i really like this. the whole album is a classic set-up, but then dipped in an electro)-funky fondue! GREAT SHITE!!!
Agree with another poster that this thing normally is not my cup of tea. However, Squarepusher is so insanely fucking talented at everything - his chops are ridiculous and among the best in the world, melodies are totally infectious, songwriting skill top-notch, and as a dnb artist, breaks that are out of this world and a sense of rhythm that goes light years beyond that of your avg dnb artist. This guy is simply one of the most brilliant and talented musicians walking the face of this planet.
@adhurkhan This isn't just Squarepusher, it's his new group, Shobaleader One. So it's four musicians - Tom on bass, a guitarist, a synth player and a drummer.
@mushedoutmonk no. squarepusher is like the equivalent of yoda. and the ed banger blokes are his young apprentices. he conjures up the ideas then releases his force through gaspard, xavier and sebastiAn. trust me, i've seen them rehearse "ahem".
Has anyone else noticed the guitar used in this video is the same one hanging on Tom's wall in his session for the Guardian newspaper? I think its Tom playing everything as per usual....the guy's a genius!
@nathanwalker462 neither were those solo bass and guitar pieces on ultravisitor. i like that he's not just skullfucking tired idm formulas into the ground.
the genius of this is the soundworld he has created by listening to this through some shitty phone speakers, and even at low sample rates. There is a direct connection with the music rather than the distance u feel when you play other songs through such devices. He's spreading technological-soul/emotion that may seem like a contradiction depending on your views of technological integration and extension ala transhumanism. Making fun of cliche and always forward thinking. Great album IMO
First I liked this, then I stopped liking it a bit, now I like it again. I think for me that means it's good. It definitely achieves it's "Space-Pop" aim too, I can imagine it being played in some futuristic cocktail bar in an episode of Buck Rogers, I remeber thinking that about some of Just A Souvenir too. There's definitely nothing else like it that I can think of, it's not like Daft Punk. Not sure I can handle the secrecy though as to what the deal is with the band.
Squarepusher is great because every single album is different. I mean we heard him at his hardest at at his softest. He can do anything. I think people should look at him as an artist in a whole and stop whining about missing the breakcore style shit. I mean he comes out of left field all the time and throw down super hard gabber tracks. Fuckin Steinbolt! That shit was harder than most death metal! Let him do the damn thing and stop complaining!
@hveiti It's very ignorant to claim that Daft Punk aren't "evolving". There's a hugely significant metamorphosis throughout DP's work, and you'd have to be deaf to ignore it.
Does anybody know how he gets that cool vocal-like guitar sound on this track? There's definitely some weird kind of mod effects going on, but I'm not entirely sure what they are.
mix of phase and distortion probably. Mess around with flange, phase and distortion on your amp, you'll be surprised at the vocoder/voice-like sounds you can make
I want one of those masks. I wonder if its programmed to display different patterns depending on the noise of the guitar and vocals (are they vocals? I presume they recorded and synthesized live).
@LIGHTRONIX: I don't really care about the volume, it's just that they're impossible to understand and sound really boring. But I didn't care about the drums. I know this isn't Squarepusher's usual 10 million BPM Vic Acid-style material, so having a complex drum track wasn't that important to him.
@SuperDABATMAN Yeeaah... NO! While you may like Daftpunk tracks more, they are not TECHNICALLY better, by a long shot. 2:40 proves it. Hell, listen to "Bubble and Squeak" or "Feed Me Weird Things" from 96.
