    Sighting objects along the line you've walked on a bearing can act as good markers if taking a back bearing too.

    What about magnetic variation?

      Magnetic declination in the UK is, at the moment, minimal so unless your compass can show half a degree accurately it’s not really worth calculating unless you’re in a military operation.
      Of course that changes over time and it’s good to briefly mention this.
