    Cooking shows such as these were such a product of their time. This one, along with Fanny Cradock and Delia Smith, were all about how to produce relatively simple dishes with cost in mind and using ingredients that most people would have to hand. These days it's all about arty camera angles and creating dishes which most ordinary people just wouldn't bother with.

      Exactly. Cooking programmes today are aspirational not practical. Just like property programmes about houses that cost a minimum of 600,000 quid

      Exactly 100% you said right

      Take at look at James May's Foodtribe channel. He grew up in this era, and nearly all of his recipes are very simple economical recipes of that era.

    “Are you going to put this one in?”
    “No I’m going to let it soak for half an hour” [like I just said about 30 seconds ago, you dunce Judith!]
    That was payback for daring to suggest the milk mixture be heated first.
    Then Judith hits back by implying that Mary has burnt the currants.
    Fab! I love the faint tension between them.

    Just made it, so easy and only one egg needed during Corona lockdown. No raisins but had old cranberries so used that instead.Tasted delicious.Thank you Mary Berry.You are the best.

    actual bread and butter pudding! nothing fancy! just like my mum made! minus the lemon zest though. and the crusts left on. and also the burnt raisins. always tuck in your raisins, Mary.

  • @acmulhern
    @acmulhern 5 лет назад +9

    I never put the currants on the top before baking though, just under the layer of bread. Then at the end, when theres less than 5 minutes left i put the currants on top. That way they’re not burnt and bitter. That’s one thing I really hated as a child and I really try to avoid it at all cost.

    It amazes me how much more stodge people ate back then but you didn't see as many overweight people from what I'm told, I guess people didn't snack on processed junk as much. Also, I assumed Judith Chalmers would be the bossy one out of the two but she comes across as quite self-deprecating at times.

    One egg

  • @fiona-lyons
    @fiona-lyons 4 года назад +1

    I warm the milk- not heat- and add cinnamon and nutmeg for lovely spicy warming pudding. Can't understand the lack of spice here. Also I layer Iike lasagna not just bung it all in. I guess this is ok but I was expecting better than a bland, burnt pudding from Mary B. The pressure of tv I guess.
