There was a time when the view at mines view was really stunning. Back in the 80s there weren't many houses back then. And all you could really see is trees as far as the eye can see. And the mines itself but having seen what it is now, no thanks. There are a lot of beautiful places to see in Baguio. I miss the pine trees tho pine trees was plentiful then as pine trees was what made Baguio different from other places in the Philippines. Still I'm enjoying the Baguio vlogs hope to get back there in the coming days.

Thank you Marshall for showing our old haunts when I and my family were still residing, doing business, and our kids were studying in Baguio some years ago. One of the best places in the country for people with stable income. In our tropical country with long hot season and suffocating humidity, nothing beats the free aircon environment in Baguio. And the fresh vegetables and fruits make for healthful living.

Baguio has become very crowded and during peak tourist season, traffic jams are a big problem and also parking space. If you look down over the view deck fence of Mines View Park, there are tons of plastic trash thrown over by tourists that are lodged in the cliff-side greenery. The management should really look into that as below the viewpoint are residential houses and that's where all the garbage would go and then in time, it would just become a big trash pit. I do hope things will get better with more environmental awareness, education and programs.

The 1st time that I've ever watched your vlog was when you went to Baguio for the 1st time. From then on I've been following all of your vlogs & I've really enjoyed watching them. In your 2nd time in Baguio I've observed in your comments that you were not that satisfied. Baguio this days is already populated unlike before and many people from other places go there specially on holidays. If you want to have a peaceful & quiet athmosphere, go somewhere else in the nearby towns of Baguio like in Atok Benguet where you could visit the Northern Blossom Flower Farm & other scenic places. The places you've visited are mostly commercialized & over crowded. If you'll be going to Baguio again try to visit Ben Cab Museum in Asin Road. It has a cafe where you can eat after you've seen all the creative works of art. For me, Camp John Hay is stiil the best place to go in Baguio next is the Philippine Military Academy. I wished you just bought your ube pasalubong at Tamtamco's which is just located in the city's public market. It's of the same or better quality from that of Good Shepherd's.

They also sold t-shirts, Strawberry jams, ube jams, blueberries, igorot made carvings, rugs, carpets, necklaces, rings, earrings, lamps, others. Ice cream stands, fruit juices, bean curd taho, snacks, peanuts, peanut brittle of various sizes and containers

If you have time, you may want to try and go to Mt. Kalugong, the east wall or mountain in La Trinidad, to view the "Salad Bowl of the Philippines" the La Trinidad valley, and maybe on the other side of the mountain. There's no need to hike because a car can go near the top, but no public transport. There's also a restaurant on top that serves some native food, assuming they're open.
If you haven't noticed, the La Trinidad valley is inside like a gigantic crater, it's almost completely walled in by mountains.

The area you see from Mines View is the municipality of Itogon, the mining district. Indigenous Peoples (IPs) of the Cordillera practiced artisanal/ small scale mining prior to the arrival of Spaniards. According to an elder, in the olden times the river of Agno glistens. True enough, they did surface mining by gold panning where gold dusts of high grade thrive in the rivers. The Spaniards failed to control the Cordilleras and the mines. On the other hand, American soldiers studied the reports of Spanish regiments and successfully determined where the mine sites are. In 1905 the big scale mining operations owned by Americans started in the area. At one point in time, 13 mining companies operated in Itogon alone. The Igorots allowed the Americans to mine underground while the Igorots continued their farming and cattle raising on the surface. Little did they know that eventually, water tables will be destroyed, and mine tailings polluted and killed the rivers. Thus rice farming, gardening and cattle raising were ruined. Open pit mining (OPM) techniques were introduced early in 1990s but refused by 6 out of 7 barangays. It took only five years for the open pit to operate while indigenous communities in Barangay Loacan were displaced, burial grounds desecrated, schools, churches and residences were eased out. Mountains were flattened out, forests gone together with the disappearance of the wildlife - civet cats, monitor lizard, owls, wild birds and many more. In late 1990s, gold prices dipped down and some companies ceased operations. Three large-scale mining companies still hold on to their lease contracts. Today, small-scale mining (or camote mining) continues but some have incorporated the use of chemicals introduced by large scale mines - cyanide and mercury. More envi friendly indigenous techniques persist though. Eventually, some areas were developed as subdivisions down below the Mines View. The value of the gold in the mountains you see is immense but luckily, communities would rather preserve the integrity of their environment though much has been degraded. The primary mineral is copper and gold. Where you have copper, you have gold. Where you have gold you have silver - thus the silver jewelry industry in Baguio thrived before. The Mining operations which started in 1905, gave way for the Americans to develop Baguio City - the Summer Capital of the Philippines- because during summer the American colonial government will hold their Sessions in Baguio. Architect Burnham envisioned and designed the city only for 20,000 population back then - so roads are narrow and now we see traffic jams. - Go visit the Baguio Museum to get more information. Thanks, your viewers learn from your vlogs. And by the way, for the info of many, small-scale mining contributes more to the coffers of Philippine Central Bank. As to why some large scale mines stopped, according to the IP elder, when the indigenous communities were threatened by eviction and saw the destruction of the ancestral lands due to big mines, they cursed the corporate mines and eventually, nature spirits decided to hide the gold.

It's a nice quiet area away from the Mines View crowd, ideal for an early morning walk and also has a nice view. There was a 200 year-old pine tree there in Outlook Drive, I believe it was one of the oldest pine trees in Baguio, sadly it got uprooted and washed away during a storm back in 2018.

The garden is not really that great, in my opinion. Aside from the ube jam, Alfajores (similar to Argentinian cookies and Russian tea cookies) are the best at Good Shepherd's. I hope you get to buy the raisin bread and banana bread of Baguio Country Club which has a kiosk at SM Baguio, get there in the morning as these goodies are in high demand. Safe travels.

Hi Marshall as previously mentioned i prefer Baguio City of the old. Baguio city now is ugly, crowded and lacks urban planning. Mines View Park in olden times was beautiful and calm and no houses in those hills. Now it is ugly and noisy. As i said Philippines is good at destroying places and making it ugly. We are not aesthetically inclined. Besides the cooler climes it is mostly for local tourist now in my opinion. I hope the local government address the issue of urban planning and rebeautification of Baguio City and bring it back to its former glory.

Hi, we translate Pasalubon as Souvenirs in English.

Foodstuff are not souvenirs. Pasalubong is usually famous foodstuff from a certain area.

Souvenirs are usually things one buys for one's self. The word Pasalubong has a meaning that we just don't have a word for in English. That's why I joked about co opting it. Anyway, thanks as usual for your comment my friend.

I'm surprised you haven't visited BenCab museum. If it's relaxing views you're after, their garden and surrounding woods have those in spades. And the owner purposely bought the neighboring hill to preserve those views.

I wanted to go just to have a look,m no camera. I think vlogging would be tricky because it's all someone's intellectual property and I wouldn't want to impinge.

I see. Thought cameras would at least be allowed in the cafe, garden or the hiking trails; never had any issues with camera use in outdoor areas the few times I was there. But still might be worth a visit even without vlogging. 🙂

You can probably equate pasalubong to edible souvenir...then again when I ask for pasalubong I don't expect it to be edible goodies.
