Starmania is a legendary rock opera composed by the genius Michel Berger (singer and composer for the greatests).
The lyrics are from the french canadian Luc Plamondon who also wrote the lyrics for Notre-Dame de Paris.
There are many great songs from the same musical that were covered later by: Celine Dion, Cindy Lauper, Lara Fabian,…
The musical is currently touring again with a new casting, including the amazing Louise Charbonnel (check her cover of Indigo night and you will be blown away)
The version that attracted Dimash to do a cover is not this one in fact but the version from the amazing Gregory Lemarchal, a very young french singer who was stellar, singing despite suffering of cystic fibrosis and died only a pair of years after having been discovered . He is remembered as the Angel of french music.
Je confirme, tout est absolument exact. :)
Oui, pareil. Bravo !
Tous les cris les SOS... Listen to that song, one of his most beautiful tracks... After Starmania, Daniel Balavoine made his own career, he was a writer, composer and singer, he became the favorite singer in France...
3:17 "French don't like other people anyway" easy on the stereotype my dude 😅(regarding the lyrics though, I don't know if French as a language is the "best way" to sing this song, but there is some genuine well written lines in this song, that is one thing "good" French songs can have sometimes, this popular yet litterary aspect).
Balavoine is amazing, honestly. I've grown up with his music (and other old French music, haha) and the emotions are just soooo real.
If you want another version of this song by another great French singer that left us way too soon, Grégory Lemarchal has a lovely one he performed on Star Academy (a TV show like X Factor, The Voice and the like from the early 2000s). He sadly passed away at 25 from an incurable disease.
Balavoine too left us way too early.
Tous les cris les sos. Is a great song from him.
Song's name is actually "SOS d'un terrien en détresse" and there two Balavoine's songs with "SOS" on the tilte, this one and "Tout les cris les SOS"
I always knew and understood this song but since I've seen Starmania it always bring me on the verge of tears.
It's about a men living on the word and asking himself "Why I am here ? Why I am not just bird to fly and live peacefully despite how awfull this world can be?"I oftenly related to this when I was a child
Thank you for this great reaction and analysis ! 😊👍
Actually they tried to adapt Starmania in english and had the main songs performed by some famous english singers (cyndi lauper, tom jones to name a few), and this song renamed "only the very best" by Peter Kingsbury is also fantastic.
Yes. The musical was "Tycoon".
This is a very tragic song in Starmania. It comes after the sudden death of one of the main characters. It sums up much of what the story is about: the struggle between the light of stardom and the darkness of everything else. It's very existential and truly the crux of what each character in the story is feeling (and resolving in different ways). I've known this song since it came out in 1978. It's extremely famous in France, because it's beautiful of course, but also because it's very hard to sing. The song was written for Daniel Balavoine's voice and covered the full spectrum of his voice. It's impossible for me to think of this song and imagine any other voice singing it. Many have tried (and mostly failed) and a very few have managed to make it their own (like Dimash as everyone knows), but Balavoine's version is the only one that is true to the song and the story behind it. After over 20 years off stage, Starmania is touring in France and other French speaking countries. Can't wait to see it again.
Thanks for watching this. If you enjoyed Daniel Balavoine's unique voice, you should check out some of his other songs (my favorite is Tous les cris, les sos). Sadly he died very young. His career was just taking off and ready to go international when he was killed in a helicopter accident. But many of his songs are still well known in France and regularly covered. He was incredibly passionate and an amazing singer, creator and artist. He's become something of a legend in France. No one ever replaced him and his songs are still very relevant today.
Quel fidèles description et quel bel hommage à Daniel Balavoine. Merci pour ces mots, Martine.
The problem with Dimash version is that he's slaughtering the lyrics, as he doesn't speak french... There are moments where what he sings is pretty much gibberish, so I can't get into the performance at all...
Balavoine version is the best for me, second best would be Gregory Lemarchal (but his own story adds quite a bit to the meaning of the song...)
Great analysis and you’re right, delicacy makes this version unique
FWIW, I find "Le Chanteur" to be Daniel Balavoine's greatest song.
He didn't compose SOS but he became one of the top 2 best sellers in France in his era, with his own pieces.
Hie from France. There are so many hits to discover from D Balavoine ,just dig !!!
with incredible play by the bassis jannick top
Bass player: Jannick Top. Top musician. He was always here behind Balavoine, Michel Berger, France Gall. Played in Magma, a legendary progressive french band.
You could also listen to the version of Peter Kingsbery (Cock Robin) - Only the very best, very different, but very good too !
This is not Daniel's best performance - you would need to listen to performances at the time when Starmania first came out or the original recording. The sane role was played wonderfully for many years by Bruno Pelletier (who also sang on stage in Notre Dame de Paris). I saw him live in both and he was wonderful. Unfortunately no good video of SOS on RUclips but NDP is available. Check him out!
You should listen ' Tous les cris les SOS ", such incredible vocals and new sounds for that time (1980's) created by him, powerful and expressive music !!!!
Daniel Balavoine. Period.
Janick Top at the bass...
Dimash has better range. But the fact is he doesn't really understand what it means, in context. And that's fine. But when Balavoine does it.. it's vulnérable and sad.. it's heartbreaking.
Also... Balavoine was an awesome human being. Anti racist, anti misogynistic. Would go in french media to argue against assholes. Great person.. beautiful artist. Gone too soon as is usually the case.
And important fact, for me, at least someone have to understand a song and in all the cover, we french cant understand a shit so are you 😂
Dimash knows the meaning of the song...he studies the lyrics before he does a cover of songs.
The technic does't make all.
in the same style style i suggest france gall monopolis taken this opera rock to
I have greatly enjoyed your reaction, and the interesting comments you made. Yes, ut is the best version of that song, I agree totally. Daniel balavoine was a grand singer, but even more than that, he was an icon of French music and culture. Like others suggested to you, you should definitely listen to "Tous les cris les SOS", a song of his that is truly haunting.
And this song fits perfectly one of the comment of the video : in french songs (but i guess it is the same for other language), the words, their sounds and pace (like a wave) participate to the music itself. I cant imagine "Je me raccroche à la vie/Je me saoule avec le bruit/Des corps qui m'entourent/ Comme des lianes nouées de tresses/
Sans comprendre la détresse/Des mots que j'envoie " translated in another language. The pace of this sentences when they are delivered is definitvely linked to the words and make "Tous les cris les SOS" a jewel...
Have you heard the version of Gregory Lemarchal, before Dimash. 👍👍👍
Michel Berger was ready to get the ride of Luc Plamondon on starmania lyrics, Music was ready and he was lazy and the lyrics was sheezzy, so Berger spent time to rewrite all with Luc
Gregory Lemarchal have an Amazing version who sweat his life in it !! worth watching it. ( Gregory knew IS life would be short, he die young because of sistic phybrosys )
Lemarchal version is very emotional when you know the situation he was in, and choosing this song has an entirely different meaning then...
bass a sick on this version true
Great bassline, don't know why they put a bassline like that on a song like this 😂, but it's great
You answered your own question. It's great.
nice
It’s so romantic so French… compared to Britney Spears lol
Well the song is not so romantic : it is about someone who considers to commit suicide. The song is taken from Starmania that is rather dark and very prophetic of our current society (ecological problems, people that became terrorist from despair, politics & business that are interwined, the star system and its flaw. Everybody (or mostly everybody) dies at the end....So no, not so romantic....
Balavoine's best version !
Ça se joue avec gregory lemarchal
@@bonnetnoirparisien9335oui Gregory l'interprète magnifiquement aussi. 👍
Please great vocal DİMASH - SOS cover...👍🙋🏻♀️
you should listen to the version of Dimash from Slavianskiy Bazar. I give you 1000000% you will change your mind about who sinngs SOS the best!
Do you know what you are talking about? Obviously not.
Dimash is a good voice technician, but i can't feel any emotion when he's singing.
I agree. But I would recommend the Digital Concert version from 2021.
Lemarchal and Balavoine sound pretty and very emotional and have a good range.
But Dimash is additionally more dynamic and has better technique, an exceptional range and I also feel more emotional when hearing Dimash’s performance. (But how you react emotionally is different from person to person. The technique though … Dimash always ❤)
The og !!
