In 1974, a young lad watched his dad arrive home in British Racing Green Jaguar 420G. That car made a huge impression on the young lad and to this day some 47 years later he has owned nine Jaguar's and still craves another classic Jaguar.
That young lad is me, and to see this video brings back many brilliant memories!

When I was 10 years old a doctor used to visit an elderly lady who lived across the road from our house , he had a golden sand MK10 I used to just stand and look at it and wait for him to leave so I could see him driving away in this magnificent car . From then I vowed some day I would have one I am now fortunate to have six Jaguar cars one being a 1969 420G totally original with 37000 genuine miles from new and also being a very rare manual overdrive version .

I have always been fascinated by this model. Just beautiful. Our family took our first trip to England and Europe in 1967 when I was 15, and I first saw it then. NEVER forgot it. I have two VDP sedans... a 2001 (titanium) and 2002 (slate mica) . I love their sculpted lines...would have loved to own a 420G. There's nothing like a Jaguar (and with a great mechanic, it's no big deal to own one)0.

From the side it is the most beautiful shape Jaguar ever designed. The rear is beautifully sculpted but the front with its bulbous sides was controversial. However the 4 main lights were iconic and as for the interior sumptuous is an understatement.

A black 420G is one of my dream cars, if money was no problem.
It looks absolutely sinister, in a beautiful way.
I was close to considering buying one a few years back,
but it wouldn't have fitted into the garage.
Did you notice, classic Jaguars don't have cigarette lighters?
    They have cigar lighters.

Truly a thing of beauty. By the late 70’s and early 80’s these and the earlier mk10’s were to be seen, everywhere, unloved and rotting away in every town in the UK. Zero rust protection coupled with buyers who gave not a thought to longevity or preservation. Thankfully a couple of hundred have survived. Have Jaguar ever made a car that wasn’t beautiful to behold?

Nice film. When I was a kid (late 70's) dad got one delivered home (much to mums disapproval) on the back of a trailer, the head gasket had gone, so he reckoned to fix it up. It was in the garage for years with its back end stuck out and the garage door tied down. Engine in bits. It's was too big to fit. I remember playing on the back seat and the smell of it inside. Gold & black it was. Have to ask him what happened to it, don't remember TBH.

From 1973 onward I'd visit scrapyards (Britain) for odds&ends there were all kinds of Jags.
I loved sitting in them admiring the walnut & leather, quality carpets, that old Jaguar/Daimler smell, the dials, switches, fold down tables like in airliners.
Although beautiful in every way they rusted badly, not lasting long. Positive earth, salty roads in winter I was told.

The Mk 10 and 420G are the vintage Jaguar to own if you are of a larger size (height and/or girth). I've had several, and can tell you that the cabin is a very serene place to watch the scenery pass you by, in comfort, at highway speed. It's hard to believe that Jaguar decided to "replace" the 420G with the XJ6 series I, a much smaller car with similar styling. I guess they felt that if you needed that big car, you'd buy a Daimler DS420, a car built on an extended wheelbase of the 420G platform, and which was advertised in one brochure (assumed to be seriously named) entitled "Your Daimler Limousine is here, your Excellency".

As I have aged my appreciation of the brilliance of combining the performance of the Jaguar chassis with the ambiance of the Bentley finally struck. Yes My Mark 10 is black with black interior.

From Sydney, Australia, my mum bought a new black with cream seats Jag mk10 in November 1961 & replaced it near 10 years later with a 1971 opalescent gunmetal grey 420G the second last new one delivered to Australia she kept it for decades when a drunk in a truck hit it & wrecked it. I bought a 1967 cream with oxblood (deep maroon) leather seats in 1975 i still own & drive it. I had multiple toy ones as a child, I bought all 10 colors of the Corgi ones, 3 colors of the Dinky toy ones, 2 out of 4 colors of the Spot on ones as they were expensive, then 3 different brands of 1/24th scale plastic ones , all 4 colors of the big 1/20th scale Telsalda ones and one gigantic 1/12 scale Laurie toys one towing a 1.5litre GP Ferrari race car on a trailer. Worried that they may break as they were fragile brittle plastic I put all the big plastic ones in a glass & wood cabinet I scavenged from a demolished house as a 9 year old. I still have all of them, the real one I bought years ago & ALL the toy ones, the big plastic ones are like new. A mint boxed Laurie Toys 1/12 scale one with the Ferrari race car is no longer a 19/6pence set , but on ebay or an auction house its now a 1,000pound antique!! I used to stand looking at them , my prized possessions in the glass cabinet , Nanna said you can look & wish with all your might , but they will not turn into a real one !! My looking at them was my absolute determination to have one in reality in my then coming future as an adult. In '61 I saw the real ones being made at the Jaguar factory, escorted through the factory with my hand held as a 6 yr old by Norman Dewis. MK10's were hand built sitting on enormous wheeled work dollies, when all was complete a crane using the 4 jacking points lifted the fully completed body with all its interior fitted & lowered it onto the suspension units, front & rear. All the wood pieces are numbered & belong to a certain car, impressive to a six year old. E types & Mk2's were all going around on conveyors being part built & moved along, the mk10's were not they sat on their own some being built/assembled by hand. Re the Daimler 450 version of a mk10, jaguar were going to do it but when they floated as a public company & BMC bought the magic 51% they were told cease. The different dash top with the black crash pads & the knee protecting tray crash pads in black & the chrome waist strip, even the new grille as fitted to the 420G were all to be the different Daimler fittings, look at the grill slat material on the 420G it is the same hollow square cut grille material as the Daimler 250 sedan & the Daimler Sovereign 1A (ie the clone of the jaguar 420 compact prior to the xj6 daimlers). To absolutely stop Jaguar from building them, all remaining completed Daimler 4.5 Hemi engines were one day collected, same with all the tooling, all spare parts by order of BMC, removed & smelted down so said Norman Dewis. For a 6 months from may to november 1966 Jaguar built the big ZENITH cars in 2 flavours 4.2 mk10 & 420G, this was the exact same time when all the engines were taken away, all they had to do was make a new grill frame without the Daimler flutes at the top , as all the grill slats had already been cut, the black plastic with gold lettering Daimler to cover the mk10 bootlid plinth's Jaguar script were used on the Sovereign's & later first few years of the Daimler DS420 limousines, this plastic piece is tooled & molded to fit & be glued over the Jaguar lettering , like fitting a hand into a glove
