His translator did not translate the important word Hideki said. He did not just say "I am now the pioneer so many more will follow me." He said it more like, "Now I opened up the door to other (Japanese players), I would expect changes in Japanese players' mind and many strong players will emerge. So, I should work even harder in order to win."
I understand your skepticism with “pioneer”, because of its negative connotations with american pioneer culture, but its not a bad thing. Pioneer is maybe the translators way of shortening what he said/ Americanizing it. I would have liked to see a japanese american translating but short notice i guess.
@@rvp1073 Actually not short notice. Bob Turner became Hideki's translator through pure happenstance way back in his collegiate days (search it up on google). I get translations should be condensed/rearranged at times, but Bob has missed a bunch of details or flat our misinterpreted Hideki's answers in interviews if you can understand both languages. Really don't think Hideki cares since it has not got him into controversies over the years.
In a different part the translator wasn't correct too.
When Matsuyama was asked about his family and friends watching him play, he answered that he wasn't thinking about them while playing, but the translator said "I was thinking about them" .

They have no reason to give him one. Yes he was the first african-american to compete in the Masters, but that alone isn't a reason of making him a member of the club. The reason why the winner get a jacket is due to them becoming a honorary member of Augusta National and only members are allowed to wear the jacket.
