They didn’t explain much details about what happened 10 years ago when he played as an amateur at Masters so allow me to share this story for those of you who don’t know. It was only a month after the tragedy of earthquake/tsunami hitting northern part of Japan. Hideki, as a student going to college there, wasn’t sure if he should participate in Masters leaving the people under such distraught circumstances. His life was also not back to normal, only eating cup noodles everyday and losing weights. Finding out his hesitation, people in Sendai had started sending him letters with encouragement to participate in Masters and go after his dream and not worry about them. They also told him watching him pursue his dream would give them hope and courage they need to strive for the future. They say the letters amounted to be about 4-inch thick. With that, he decided to play at Masters for those people who pushed his back, so he wore the shirt with 🇯🇵 embroidered and brought all of the letters to Augusta National. The result was the top finish as an amateur. He responded to their voices and their hopes with his clubs. Many people had lost houses so they watched him play at the shelter or even in a car.
This year was the 10-year anniversary of 3-11 in Tohoku. That’s why it was even more meaningful for the people in Tohoku area and for Hidemi to win at this time. He said he was able to change (step up as a golfer) because of those people pushing his back to get there 10 years ago.
Anyway, thank you for reading this much if you are still reading it.😅 Also, thank you so much for all of those kind, heartfelt comments towards him and Japan🇯🇵. While Asian hate exists, it’s so nice that we can all take a break from those non-sense on the golf course. You guys rock!!!😘❤️💕
Also, Japan thank you for your support you have shown us towards 3-11 tragedy. 🥰 Wishing you all the best and happiness from a Japanese golf fan.🇯🇵💕❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
great story man!

The people’s champion. Always great to see a underdog take it out. Especially a champion who plays with such appreciation and respect for the game
Very well said.
Not sure he was an underdog multiple experts had him winning
@@ristonfuller1319 definitely an underdog. hadnt won a tournament in 3-4years
Tekmateak mate come on, he was an underdog. He was definitely not a favourite. I think he was paying @$56 to take it out before the tournament began. No japanese man had ever won a major and this guy had been out there for 10 years. Not many saw this coming and you can’t sit here and say he wasn’t an underdog.
I wouldnt say he was a favourite to win, but I also wouldnt call him an underdog. Yeah he hasnt won in 4 years, but hes shot 61 at firestone on a sunday, tied sawgrass record of 63 before tourny was called out last year. I've been following his career since his low am, and hes been one of my favourite players, so maybe thats why i think this way.
I can't wait to hear the warm reception he gets going home to Japan! His country gotta be super proud!

I remember watching this live, I really rooted for Hideki because he deserved to win his major. I also watched 2017 PGA Championship when it didn't go his way so I was really glad when he managed to pull this off.
おめでとう ! 素晴らしいチャンピオン!

Nothing like the quiet guy just going out every day to practice and compete just doing his best every day and accepting the challenge and the results because he gave an honest effort each and every day. And today he is the MASTERS Champion. And a rockstar in Japan.
well said Ken!😀

Couldn’t have picked a better year to win it with Japan hosting the olympics in a few months 🇯🇵 ⛳️ Big up Hideki
That will be indeed interesting. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
I didn’t know Japan was hosting the Olympics in a few months
Olympics with barely any fans. So it doesn’t even matter where it is.

Most people don’t want the Olympics to go ahead.
Couldn't of happened to a better person. Hideki has always been one of my favorites on tour for his humbleness and complete respect for the game and his competitors. His attitude is infectious. Congrats to Hideki Matsuyama. Best thing is we'll see him in Augusta every year now for the rest of his life!
Hideki absolutely roasting his last two drives to close it out after a rough stretch on 15 and 16 and under all that pressure was absolute class.

3 bogeys out of the last 4 holes. Matsuyama was doing his best to choke the tournament away. That's what frickin' intense pressure can do to a player. Fortunately he played great the first three rounds and built up a nice big lead to have a bit of cushion for when the 'chokies' took hold.
1打差で優勝って改めて観ると感慨深い。 おめでとう!来年がさらに楽しみになりました!有給とって応援します!目指せマスターズ2連覇!
Top Talent from Japan! Love from USA, honor to watch this player.
ありがとう松山英樹😭
Thank you Hideki . Pride of Japan 🇯🇵
He played incredible especially the 3rd round after the weather delay. A great and humble champion.

Congratulations to the first Japanese to win a Masters Golf Tournament. I love it. He is officially a legend in that country now.
I'm so proud of him as a Japanese! Thank you from Tokyo.

“This is the Masters!”
Yeah thanks for that update dude.
Wait what was I just watching?
Ugh, he says it in that snobbish voice as if he could be shooting better.
Survival under extreme pressure. Not excelling but surviving is sometimes what it takes.

My first PGA tournament I went to, I wanted to follow a Japanese golfer. Because they have great swings. I sat around until the first one came along "Hideki Matsuyami"! and I followed him for 18 holes. Seeing him drive was just something else. His drive is out of this world organized, mechanical, just a piece of beauty. At the end of the day I thought "Well that was fun and educational. But this guy probably won't ever win anything."
Are you happy that your assumption was proven wrong? 😊
hey, you never know. he still might.
I mean how often is a pro golfer's swing not great?
もうこの瞬間をずっと待ってたよ
Great day for golf, great day for Japan. Making history... Congrats Matsuyama
Loved this ! True peoples champion
We're really proud of you Hideki. Also thanks to all the patrons and great Augusta national stuff from Japan.

Arigato Hideki for giving us a show- you kept many of us at the end of our seats. You deserve the WiN!!👍 Congrats 👏
I think watching his caddie turn and bow to the Augusta National course is one of most special moments in all of sports.
Watching this again eventhough I got no clue about golf.
I heard Matsuyama from one of my students who was (maybe still is?) passionate about golf.
This performance is really fascinating.
This was great to see and huge for Japanese golf. The pressure alone of trying to win a Masters on Sunday is massive and then add in carrying the weight of an entire country pulling for their guy to do something no other Japanese man has ever done is just crazy. Really handled that like a champion and even held it together after some missteps on the back 9 where it got really close with Xander pushing.
Congrats to Hideki on a much deserved win!
Matsuyama, well done. Just well done. You let your game speak for itself. No BS. No fluffs. No drama. Just pure game.
Congrats to a deserving and humble champion. It got tense toward the end but he held it together. Well done sir!
HM has been one of my top 3 players I route for over the years.. very happy to see him take this Championship.. more to come undoubtedly
Congratulations to Hideki. Lovely moment for Japan and Golf.
He endured well and played. If I were a player, I think I was exhausted by the first tee shot. Really congratulations.
A thoroughly deserving champion. What a performance.
I love his style of play !!!! Great job
It definitely means a lot for Japanese people. It also means a lot for Asian people nowadays. Thank you. Hideki Matsuyama.

松山最高‼️
What a superb exhibition of chipping & putting from Matsuyama over rounds 3 & 4. Very well done, a well deserved green jacket.
He was horrible on putt shots honestly... never made a single long put, even middle ranged ones.
Real nervy but somehow managed to pull it off. Congrats!
A well-respected man now playing a gentleman's sport. Great sports man
Wonderful! Exciting to see him win against an amazing field of champions.
Congratulations, it was wonderful to watch your win!

Great player, he was due.
Wow, beautiful.
Crazy he had such a lead after 15 holes and he still left a considerable number of shots out there from short putts. Scary to think what damage he can do in the future when he makes those things inside 10 feet all the time
Brilliant to watch...congratulations Hideki🥳
So happy for Hideki Matsuyama and Japan. Well deserved win...
A clínic in shot shaping , course management. This kid never bombed, yet he kept the ball in play.
It proves you do not need to tear fairways to win this one.
Hello bro, how are you doing today?
He is very powerful through hips and torso and steady as a rock on puts which you need on that sloping billiard table .
Wow very clean swing i like it very much
Massively deserved by Hideki and 🇯🇵. Kanpai!
