Such a great video!! Thanks for posting Kristian!
It’s great to see, when amazing producers appreciate each other’s work. I like it! \m/
We asked for drums, Kohle delivered drums! All hail the almighty Kohle! 🙇♂️
There you go!
Just tracked our drums for our first album, we had one reflection mic on a wall, one slap mic on another room, 4 overhead, and 3 room mics.
Now we have all the options !!
Well done! Now you can have fun.
The room of boom Kohle Drumshotz snare sample has been a lifesaver as well because of the room sound!
When i first started out i though: "Why use so many room mics?". Well...
1. Lenght - Direct mics sound punchy but it's a really short sound, room mics extend the sustain of the shells.
2. Dimension - They fill out this super cool space in the background and edges of the speakers that if you don't use rooms, you don't even know it exist.
3. Glue - It melds all of the drum sounds into a coherent unit (all for one and one for all!)
100% true
Hey! I'm automating some room mics right now. What a coincidence!
I used to work in a studio with a stairwell in it. Fantastic place to stick a ribbon for some natural reverb.
A stairwell is a place where you MUST put a room mic!
Great content as always!! It's great to see your approach on these mixing techniques! Video saved for future recall, thank you 🤘
I'm glad you pointed out the out of tune tom. haha. Isn't going to make a huge difference in the overall sound of the record, but on the room mic it's pretty gnarly.
Love the snare so much man. I like how you do the 'washy' cymbals. They don't loose their clarity or air.
Awesome. The room mikes and the way you treat them really make the sound huge, impressive and unique. Thanks for sharing, Kristian.
Thanks man!
That Blumlein pair added SO much to the kit, great vid.
Cool tip with the FF Pro-Mb. Thanks! I’ll try that.
That first example room mic is very In the Air Tonight, very cool!
Great tutorial and really in line with my approach to learning and capturing real drums. Seriously, your videos are spot on, dead simple, and the results are night and day. Keep up the great content.
Thanks man! Spread the word and stay tuned!
Thanks for sharing stuff like that! Great attitude Kristian
Love room mics! Great tips here!
THIS is amazing, gonna try it on my next recording!
Stellar sounding recordings. Really love this type of content. Thanks man, we need more of this knowledge! :). All the best.
❤️🍺Thanks!
Maaaan so far I've only used room mics for the washy sound, thanks for the video Kohle!
Absolutely amazing. Thank you very much. I need to try this asap :D
Beautiful drum sound!
Great point at the end. You don't need a purpose built room for great drum sounds. Some of the most epic drum sounds ever recorded were done in random places with mobile recording rigs.
you the man! thanks you as always.
Sounds incredible
Very comprehensive. I will definitely consider using this technique in the future.
another amazing video Kristian! gonna try that Pro-MB trick on my close room (AEA R88) Keep ‘em coming!!!
That should be aweomse on those AEAs. The perfect kind of mic for that. Just try find a place where they capture more shells than cymbals.
Kohlekeller Studio Yeah, I usually have them a bit lower (about waist hight) I do run into some problems sometimes when there’s a crash in the middle of the stereo field. I get this weird cymbal swooshing sound going from left to right and back. I asked Kurt Ballou from Godcity/Converge if he had experienced that and he said yes, in some (smaller) rooms when there’s too much sound coming back into the mic from the rear. He suggested setting up some baffle/absorber behind the mic which is what I’ll try the next time I have this issue 😊
Auf jeden Fall geil!! 🤘💪
Man those drums sounds great
Hehe, definitely inspiring!! Thanks for sharing your wisdom, it will be helpful in the Quest for the ultimately unique sound;-)
Killer video!!!!!!
nice sustain on toms :D a drum need sustain.thank you CK for this nice tuts and tips :)
awesome!
Huge difference! So much more alive and powerful!
This channel needs to be worshiped
OBEY! ;)
that toom tune sound amazing 🤣
i like lacrimas profundere ! Now that i know, that you recorded them - i like them more !
Haha! There you go. WIN / WIN
Great video brother!!! I had a question about the AKG C5600 room mics you use.....What was your thought process in choosing those particular mics?? Thanks man!!!
awesome! i just need those plugins xD
Uh yeah!
Great ! :)
You can really hear the chandelier in the room mics.
I agree but it’s easy to overdo it. A little bit of room sound goes a long way.
Wúnderbar Kris!
What a difference. Wow :)
Kristian, you have to create a drum kit for Toontrack Ez drummer !!
Very nice! Thx for the video Kristian! I wonder what you think about putting the phases of the tracks closer to the kick or snare? I mean, do you usually do that? Getting overhead or room signals closer or "in phase" of the the snare signal by shifting the recorded tracks 'back' on the snare? When I do it it sounds like even more impact, but on the other hand it is not that easy, takes a lot of time and I am never sure if it is worth the effort. I know: what sounds good is good. I am asking more in a theoretical way. Hope that I am asking in an understandable way? 😅
Every time I tried aligning overheads or roomtracks to the closemics, it sounded weird and not natural.
I just check the polarity!
@@KohleAudioKult Thank you very much for the answer! I feel the same. Really appreciate answering my question and many thumbs up for your content! It is really great and informative. And a joy to watch! Thx again!
Hey Christian, klingen klasse die Räume. Gruß ausm Village
Gruß zurück!
Is it possible to mimic stereo room mics with only one mic? I have enough SM57’s to do that long distance thing with them and I’m planning to use single Neumann TLM 103 for closer room mic.
unfortunately I'm one of those home recording artists/mixer/producer that on my own stuff I have to use samples, but have just give this a try out on a couple of tracks I'm working on and the drums sound massive thanks man
You can use the tricks on any natural sounding room channel of any VSTi
@@KohleAudioKult totally agree I'm going to do a video on this at some point
That kick sounds phenomenal fuck. Can we get a snippet how can we reach that sound?
Hello, How to do manage to blend the kick with the reflections of the rest of the kit? Do you tweak a reverb plugin just for this purpose? Thanks 🙏🏽, great video.
I just make sure the tracks are „in phase“. No magic
Awesome video as always! Can you do a video about your CC121 Cubase controler? Is it worth it?
It is. At least for me. Don't know if that's worth a video though
Check out Dom Sigalas's channel. He just uploaded a very in-depth video on this controller few days ago. It's really cool.
Were you careful to position the room mics so that the phase would line up, or did you just adjust it after recording?
Just check if + or - is better.
Those mics are so far away that fine-tuning is not really necessary.
Do you use any plugin to phase align?
Hi Kristian!! This video is a great video!!
Could you get this room sound from a small room recording?
The smaller the room, the more difficult. But with extreme compression, you can make small rooms sound a lot bigger.
Check out my newest video about this:

Wow!! Thanks for answer, i appreciate it!! Going to see it!!
I found your channel after your collaboration with Warren and all your videos are huge!! Thanks for sharing your experience!!
Greetings from Spain
Great video! I just have a question, do you move the room mic in the DAW to match the main drum track for phase? Thank you
No I dont! I just adjust the polarity if needed.
@@KohleAudioKult Great! Thank you very much.
Those drums sound orgasmic!
Check out my newest video then! Thanks! 🍺❤️
can i use a separate drum bus with reverb if im using samples, instead of room mics?
You can try. But room mics will work a lot better with compression.
Thanks for the tips!, one question, with the room mics been different distances from the kit, do you need to do any time adjustment or aligning or do you keep them as they are?
Mostly I keep them where they are. Moving them mostly sounds weird to my ears. But never say never.
@@KohleAudioKult many thanks 👍
Do you know how you are gonna fix this drum tuning issue on the big floor tom ?
By not adding that much room compression on that part, haha!
The tom is tuned too low for its size. Just a half step higher could make it go away. Could also be that one or more of the lugs came loose.
Floor toms are super sensitive to tension changes. The tiniest loosening can drop the tuning completely below the usable range. It's important to check the tuning before each take, despite how ergonomically horrible the bottom heads are to tune. This problem goes away with higher tunings but who wants that kind of floor tom sound?
Hi, how do you do with the latency between close mics and the room mics? Do you keep it as it is or do you adapt the timing by moving the room mic tracks?? Thanks for your effort!
I just check the phase between them and the close mics. That's usually it.
@@KohleAudioKult Thanks! I am running a minor studio in Stockholm/Sweden and struggling, mostly with the snare. You accomplish really nice drumsounds!
Hi Kristian,
supposed you would haven't a stereo pair for the distant placed room mic position but a mono room mic. Would you align this to the near placed stereo ribbons or would you use it unaligned to add more room information to the drums?
Best regards!!!
Stefan
I never align them unless I’m recording in a huge hall.
@@KohleAudioKult ah, okay! Thank you for the fast response!
Best regards!
For a second I thought Room Blumlein said Room Blumpkin
Are you aligning the phase on the room mics?
Beside checking the polarity, no!
Hey Kohle!
How is the CC121 Controller? Can you make a video on it or other DAW controllers?
It's a handy tool for Cubase. I love it. I'll think about doing a video.
Right now I'm pretty sure there are 200 other videos descriing the functions already, no?
@@KohleAudioKult Maybe. But your videos are always both informative and entertaining, so its easy to follow
Geil.. 🍻
Logo!
Can you get good results using dynamic mics for the closer room channel? Thinking they would be warmer and not as much cymbal harshness.
defekkto I don’t think so. Ribbons are warmer/smoother than dynamics
for me ribbons are better and warmer, but dynamics would be still better than any condensers.
Don't forget Dynamics will sound more direct because of the cardioid pattern, so Ribbons should be closer to the source to sound similar.
@@KohleAudioKult Thanks for the advice, I guess I should get myself a pair of ribbon mics
defekkto Absolutely! Get some Voodoos or Rodes.
@@KohleAudioKult do you use them on amps as well?
Hello. Great video! Interesting question, from an amateur. Let's say I have a drum recording (live or samples). Can I have any luck placing speakers into a lively room and playing back the drum recording on then, to capture a room ambience sound with a pair of microphones, which I then mix in applying the techniques you suggested? Or should I as an amateur just use reverb plugins in send mode for that? Thank you!
I have actually done that in the past.
It’s not like real room mics, but it’s a cool technique.
Do you delay room micophones by a distance they are located from a drumset?
They automatically have a delay. Or what do you mean?
I did mean if you have any phase issues
@@Szczur23 I always check phase of course. But if the mics are a few meters away from the kit and the close mics, there's usually no phase issues.
@@KohleAudioKult fair enough, thanks
Wait, what if I don't see Kohle in hell? Like, what if we keep missing each other. That'd be weird.
Bro -- WHY DON'T YOU HAVE MORE SUBS!?? People suck,.....J/k........not really. Anyway -- amazing vid!
I feel like such an amateur for having never realized there were multiband expanders
I love your videos, but it's so annoying when you call ProMB the dynamic eq... This is actually a multiband dynamics processor. I intentionally didn't call it multiband compressor because it can do much more than regular compression, but THIS IS NOT A DYNAMIC EQ. What's the difference? Multiband dynamics use crossover filters between each band, so they introduce fixed phase shift. There's no such thing in dynamic eq which only introduces phase shift when a band is being boosted or cut.
Thanks for the info!
I might be more of the lumberjack type of guy, but if I dial in an eq band that somehow reacts to the dynamic behavior of the input signal, it becomes a dynamic Eq to my simple mind, no matter if there’s a static phase shift or not.
The tuning of the toms make my ears bleeddddd. Nice video anyway !
