In this video, Sam talks us through the Rab Scimitar jacket. A medium-weight softshell option from Rab. This jacket is the perfect bridge between a fleece and a hard shell. Offering you the warmth of a fleece but with some weather resistance. The benefit of this over Hardshell is the high level of breathability.

Why would anyone want a jacket that only protects from light rain?

As mentioned in the video a soft shell is far more breathable compared to a hardshell so if the likely hood of rain is slim but you are looking for a level of protection just incase a soft shell is a far nicer garment to wear. They are also more comfortable and offer better range of movement so are good for climbing, cycling and other activities.

Some folk (me included) perspire so much that sweat is as much of a consideration for staying dry as rain is.

Tell me you don't have a clue about being outdoors or outdoor clothing without telling me. If you're not out in rain, why would you want a jacket that protects you from the rain while sacrificing breathability (like all waterproofs).
