Katharine has an absolutely beautiful voice and a true gift. Something about her voice reminds me of a torch singer from the 20s or 30s, that subtle smokey quality in her middle range... it's so lovely. And her expressiveness is quite rare in a "pop" singer.
Stunning that this season with her and her PERFECT voice... Chris Daughtry who gives me chills when he performs, that gray haired freak Leno clone won. Where is HE now anyway?
No, it's not an ipod. It's a little speaker singers put in their ears so they can hear themselves above the crowd and stay on pitch. Kat's speaker wasn't working in this performance, but she still had perfect pitch.
er, that didn't quite answer my question, but thanks anyway. i do understand the concept of monitor speakers needed by performers to hear themselves, my question is really why she needed it when she was singing acapella (not accoustic as per my earlier post). and then she took it out only when the band started to play...
Not winning the competition has some great advantages. If you're a great vocalist like Katherine is, she has far more opportunities. She is not constrained to a 2-year contract like the winner is. Many idol contestants who didn't win, went on to be bigger successes than the winners. In regard to the earpiece, my guess (as a recording engineer) was that it gave her starting notes and perhaps some chords to keep her in the right key. You will note that she removed it as soon as the orchestra behind her began to play.
She actually does have perfect pitch. Her earpiece was not working that night. In the longer video of this, she's excited because she couldn't hear anything through her earpiece.
Was this her first performance of Over the Rainbow or from the finale? Because the other one is better. Still, every time she looks up during the "Somewhere" part I get chills.
my did she need an ear piece monitor when it was accoustic? anybody familiar with the set up? I would think that there would be ample monitor speakers around the stage perimeter. why was there a need for an earpiece?
@rachelford2068 Simon said he would win because he sang popular wedding songs, which he did, Catherine was ruined by a music industry that could not write songs for her voice.
well where the heck is taylor hicks at anyway?! hes not even famous lol jk katharine kinda sucked here but she has improved so much thats why people say she shouldve won. but even in this video i sitll like her way better than taylor hicks.
When I hear this version my skin crawls. Ewwww. If you want to hear it done well, listen to Eva Cassidy sing it. The woman had soul; McPhee had stars in her eyes.
8 years have passed Kat, and this performance still gives me goose pimples!
i have chills... seriously, she is so amazing
LOVE the acapella opening and the subtle arrangement that truly allowed her to show off her natural voice.

I know! And what has Taylor Hicks even done since?
she is the best freakin singer EVER!!
way better than that grey hair guy she shouldve totally won!!!!
I know Right. Taylor won, but now it seems like Katherine should have won, and Taylor seems forgotten.
I sang a rendition of this song, and I'd love if everyone took a look at it and left me comments!
SEE A NICOLE PILLMAN !!!
Such a pretty song can ignite itself into a race/crack/dope/I'm better than you/ war. That's sad, folks...
watch leonas version it craps all over this
Regine Valesquz and thats about it.....
must be hard to have that spotlight just on u and sing a song like that! good though...no GREat!
