On "My Car Story" we're in Geneva IL at The Geneva Concours d’Elegance on 8-28-16.
We're looking at a 1975 Toyota Celica GT in Red Paint.
The car's Owner is Rich Sperling. Rich purchased this car new. The car has under 30,000 original miles, unrestored, and in original condition (plus the added car alarm).
The 1970’s Toyota’s were so prone to rusting out, the fact this car is here this many years later is amazing!

I had one of those 1977 Celica GT Liftback, headers and high performance cam, 20R engine. it had almost 400K miles when I sold it. couldn't keep it anymore, life happens, the person who bought it worked at a classic car dealership

I have watched your channel now for years and just saw this today> Not sure how I missed it. Anyway, this is one of the cars that really started the change in the auto industry. The American manufacturers simply could not compete with this. The quality and responsiveness and even the dealer experience were way beyond what any American manufacturer offered. I love American cars, but this is really something special.
Hi Todd V, Happy to read you're enjoying the Channel with me for a long time :-) Thank you. You're right, these cars started the market moving from the American cars, Lou
Thank you for compliant Rich the owner of the car
I had this same year and model, for my first car, in 1985. I was 16. The oil pump malfunctioned once on a trip from Amarillo to Austin . Left me, at 16, stranded out near Coleman , TX. But I got it fixed in Coleman . It had over 100K miles when I got it in ‘85. It was 10 years old and felt ancient , compared to other cars from ‘85. I guess lots had changed between ‘75 and ‘85. I remember that “20R” on the engine head. Man I miss that car. I just do not see them anymore, ever
Hi Trent, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your 1st car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
I had a 74 Celica. It was white with the red stripe. It handled like a dream. It could go faster than 100 mph. I have a picture of it to remind me of my youth...LOL!

As a kid, I used to look at this style Celica in magazine ads and just dream and dream.
Thank you for viewing and sharing topgrain. Glad to read this car brings you sweet dreams :-)
Toyota's answer to the Mustang and the Camaro back in the mid 70's to mid 80's. The engine was nearly indestructible - the body and chassis would give out before the engine would . Incredible car. Arguably one of Toyota's best.
You're right on with the body giving out. It's so amazing to see an unrestored car like this, Lou
i don't think that those are the original rims
Quite impressive. The first new car I ever bought was a '75 Celica GT in a copper metallic color with white interior. At the time, demand in my area was so high I had to get on a waiting list for 2 months to get one. As I recall, the walk-away price was $5,150, tax included. I should have bought two and stored one! Thanks for keeping this one alive so long.
Hi Rex Stanley, Thank you for sharing details on your 1st new car and adding to the story, Lou.
Rex Stanley. it was my first new car to and I had to try find one got lucky The owner of this car. Rich S it was fun I wanted to last forever so I stored it many years .
What a beautiful car!!! What memories it brings back. I got mine (exactly the same as Rich's) during my senior year of college - late '74 or early '75. The price was 4020.00 plus tax and tags. I LOVED that car. Moved to Cleveland to attend Med School and the car was rusted away by the time I graduated. I wound up putting almost 120,000 miles on it though. The five speed transmission on that car was the best. They really were a bear to steer at low speed. Fat 185-13 HR radials with tubes didn't help. Haven't seen one on the road in many years.
Very nice car. I bought a 1975 Celica ST in 1988 with 86,000 miles. Put a couple hundred thousand miles on it, then upgraded to a 1990 Celica GTS. Should've never sold that car. Years later, I bought a 1974 ST and did a ground up restoration on it. Took 2 parts cars to build it! 😁
Hi Chris Norton, Thank you for sharing your Toyota experiences. The 1974 sounds like a great car. Well done! Lou
Thank You Rich .S owner
My brother bought a '75 Celica GT new back in 1975 and I was in love with that car. It was a 5-speed in Oriental Bronze with white interior. Still think it was one of the most beautiful cars Toyota ever built.
Thanks for your comment Rich S. Owner

Lovely car. I remember my friend had a 79 Celica in Michigan. It rusted a lot but still drove very well. This was when Toyota started making people in the Midwest really take notice.

My Celia was blue with white interior, I had to replace the motor $300
The car must have stayed in the garage to look so good. I wish I could own a classic like this. I remember riding in one of these as a kid. One of my neighbors had one. Great memories.

Amazing condition, just amazing, Lou
yes it is i bought it brandnew this is my car Rich S This is the the american version ta 22 was japense market car
My very first car right out of college was a silver '75 Celica GT... same car. I bought it in '80 and there was no rust.... or so I thought. Turns out the top of the front fenders were full of Bondo. Had to junk it in early '83 as the rust had overtaken it completely.

This is incredible, he's the first, and only owner since new, and he didn't put miles on it. Stored it during Winter, and the paint is flawless, when he bought this car obviously at the time it wasn't a classic, till 30 year's now. The parts for this Generation Celica, would in fact be hard to find.

Hi gene978, you're absolutely correct. My brain was not getting the message at first that this car was all original. Floored Is the right word, Lou
I bought the same car back in 75, mine was brown with the 4 speed. Had a lot of fun in it. The powertrain was bullet proof, unfortunately the body didn't like our winter, only lasted 5 years. Yours brings back a lot of good memories thanks.

Hi Lou, great find! Most of the Celicas that are still around have been modified, with custom wheels, engines, etc. This is a rare one and you can see how nice it looked when it was new. I had a silver 74 Celica GT which was almost identical, except for the bumpers and gauges. 74 and earlier Celicas had oil pressure gauges and an ammeter...
Hi gojoe283, Happy to read you enjoy this find :-) I like that it's original too, as that takes you back to that time period. I went to your Channel, and can you please subscribe & hit the bell so you can see all the upcoming cars, and don't forget (if you can) to watch the commercials so I can keep sharing with you as that's how I get $. Wow, just wow. I bought/drove several Celicas back in the day, but even when they were just 8-10 years old, none of them looked anywhere close to as nice as this.
Glad this one received a double "Wow" from you :-) High praise.
Beautiful car. Mint condition. Glad it's not in a museum. Wow

Wow that was my first car. Forest green, with the trunk luggage rack and caramel interior.. All my HS friends had big ole American cars, except one, he ha a Datsun B210. I'd love to own that. Just soooo cool.
Glad to read this one reminds you of a car you're familiar with :-)
My first car was a 76 celica gt coupe, 5 speed stick. Loved that car!! Rusted out badly and had to junk it. I've wanted another one for the last 30 years.

Hi Tony, Glad you enjoyed it, and when I walked by the car, it made me do a double take, where I was saying to myself, "is that what I think it is?" and as the story went on it only got better :-) Thank you for commenting, Lou
I remember when I got mine in 85, the exact same 75 model, I took that chrome metal piece off the side of it . I just thought it looked more like a Mustang without the chrome piece on the side

My neighbors bought a 74 Celica for their teenage son. I was a few years younger but that car was my introduction to Asian cars. I drove it when I turned 16 and really liked it.
But alas, he traded it for a '79 Camaro which seems cheap and crappy in comparison.

I would not drive that car with that kind of old tires . I seen in many cases were car enthusiast keep original tires from the factory for value but they forget they wear out and rubber degrades and could blow up in any situation causing a mounts of value to such a bueatful car

Very nice! The first gen of Japanese imports sold in America are getting rare.
Glad you like this one, and you are right, the Japanese imports are getting rare, Lou
Those original tires are a huge safety hazard!...They will rot from the inside out, no matter how many miles are on them! A friend of mine had this model, drove the hell out of it, and loved it.
Hi Curbozer Boomer, I have a few cars on the Channel with original tires, and I agree, they are a safety hazard, and at the same time I'm amazed some of them hold out, Lou

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Celica
Hi Kevin, Happy to receive "⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️" :-) Lou
20R engine (shown here) must be pretty reliable engine as well as 18RC or 8RC engines. However, since 18RC engine is made from cast iron head and block and 20R has aluminum head, could blow head gasket more often if not careful. This is because I drive1974 Celica GT, even to this date with over 300,000 miles and as far as I can tell, the head gasket never gave up yet. That's how reliable some Toyota engines are back then with cast iron engines.
HI Patrick Murphy, Thank you for sharing your first hand knowledge, Lou
It's a catch .22. Cast iron heads are more likely to crack with getting hot and cold, aluminum heads are more likely to warp if they get over heated.
I had a 74 Celica GT that looked pretty much like this one, mine was silver and didn't have those Federal rubber bumpers. Great car but it rode like a hay wagon and the fat tires/manual steering was hard to park in tight places! Mine also had oil pressure and ammeter gauges, that they replaced with idiot lights in 1975.
Hi gojoe283, Sounds to me like you remember the car well :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing, and adding to the story, Lou

You bet Lou Costabile. Your Celica looks amazing and I love red! I own a 2000 Camry and Love it!
Thank you Rich S. Owner
I bought one of these brand new on 22 Sep. 1975. Drove it almost seven years. I wonder about his claim of only 28k miles. My engine components looked better and his look like it's had more than the claimed miles. Also the tires look much too good to be as old as claimed. Brake pedal wear seems more than 29k too.
Hi Brian, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou

Hi Enrique Lopez
, Happy to read you appreciate the rarity of seeing this "Survivor" :-) Lou
Good evening:
Do you sell it ?
Hi Jose, I'm not aware of this car being for sale, Lou
It’s a pity that USA laws require those ugly bumpers - the other question for the owner would be how does an 18R engine find its way into a GT? Elsewhere GT models came with DOHC 2TG and 18RG motors some with the much sort after Yamaha cylinder heads
Hi Stuart, Safety shmafty. Slow down, scrap the bumpers, and looks cool :-) Lou
@@loucostabile - I owned a 1974 TA22 LT which was the only trim level imported by Toyota to Australia, great car that I purchased new and own for over 25 years and from memory over 700,000km - it was far from original at the end.

Nice video but it kinda annoys me how much you order Rich around.
Hi Rodger Hurlburt, As the "Producer / Director / Host, I must have been "Directing" a little to much. Rich has done several videos with me on his cars and he's a big Supporter of the Channel. Thank you for sharing and I'll do my best to not sound so pushy. Lou P.S. You can also turn the sound all the way down and just enjoy the cars that are so awesome on the Channel too :-)
Wow it looks like a Souped up Gremlin
Hmmm, I never looked at it that way. Thank you for sharing your perspective, Lou

Being a Toyota owner of 1983-SR5 4x4 truck, 1984-Corolla LE, 1984-Celica GTS, 1986-Supra Turbo, 1992-Camry XLE, 1996-Camry LE, 2007-5.7 liter Tundra, 2017-4.6 liter Tundra. Knowing Toyota vehicle the 1975 Celica Rich has is truly a treasure but looking at the wear on the interior and the amount of deterioration of labels, paint, hoses and general looks of engine compartment and when started the Cecila, wow the poor little 20R's valve train sounded so wore out. Rich shows 29,067 miles but looking at the numbers you can see that the 2 and 9 both numbers are off of center column meaning the 2 and 9 have been rolled back. The Celica has at least 90,000 to 115,000 miles on it, I have family member who are fraud investigators for decades looking at this car they pointed out much more than we could write on this comment section. So buyers beware!
Hi OAK, This is not a car for sale. I've seen more than one of Rich's cars and they're all legit. I appreciate you sharing your Toyota stories, Stay well, Lou
I sure you this car is original on restored I bought brand new miles are true not tampered with stored for many years survivor .Rich S owner
Those hoses are original there is some patina from storage over years the car wasn't driven for for years it's not restored car it's all original original miles it just turned 29.000 miles and ,69
Any of these in Canada rusted away to a pile of dust.
You're right about that.
Ouch, check the valve clearance already.
Hi Fons Paulussen, Thanks for viewing and sharing a tip, Lou
