My parents bought one new in 1977, I remember riding home from the dealer. I bought it from them in 1987 and drove it for 20 years then sold it for more then I paid for it. Would love to get the car from this video, it is done how I would loved to have done mine.
When I was in High School back in the 70's this was my Ultimate Dream Machine
I bought a 77 GT Celica new great car bought because it reminded me of the 70 mustang and I had to have it. Drove it for 3 years no problems whatsoever wish I had it back

Wow, this car sure has a presence! Both now, and back in the day. I think it would have looked good all stock in orange, but it also has a badass menacing look as it is now in black with those modifications.
Cheers! I do have everything saved to reverse to stock form....except the original 20r that I can easily access if needed. If I ever sell it all parts will be included in the sale.

My first car was a near new 1977 Toyota Celica GT Lift-back 5 speed with the tan interior. It was yellow with black accents and black window louvers on the lift-back.
What an awesome car.
It had an ESP panel which alerted the driver from anything from brake fluid to a burned out headlamp.
100,000 dollar cars today do not even alert a driver for a burned out headlamp.
My friends loved it, and even though it was rear wheel drive, it had a limited slip rear axle which did awesome in snow.
If they made the very same car today, they would sell like hot-cakes.
We had one that we sold in 1993 and I have always regretted letting it go. My husband made the decision to trade to a minivan. I figured we could just stash the fourth child in the liftback, right? Now I do have a 2005 Mustang GT but will always miss the Celica that got away....They are very much alike in ways.
Uncle had a yellow gt version in 70s I loved it.❤
I've never heard anyone say "seh-LEE-ka" until Gen Z discovered this car. Everyone in America always said "CELL-li-kah".

Love this car. It was my favorite car in high school! That 20-R engine was a great, reliable and strong engine back in the day. My car was black like this one with louvers in the back and Supra rims. Put a nice, powerful stereo with an amp mounted in the back with a bass box and I was the coolest ride in school after the guy with the Nissan/Datsun 280ZX
Brings back great memories. When I lived in Calgary in the 90s, I had a 77 Celica with the18R-G and Webers. Never could get them perfectly balanced, though.

we had one too. A Toyota Celica ST Liftback from 1974. Miss that car. But its in good hands now.
I really wish they would do a retro version in today's market that's both electric and hybrid that would be awesome and I would buy that

In Australia we call them Celeeker, as in Sleeker, My wife and I had a 75 model in the late 70’s, great little car, when our daughter came along, it was too small….unfortunately.😊

A fun car those 20 rs aren't particularly fast but if you revved it up a little and dump the clutch you can get a nice little skrrt!, skrt! The little two-wheel drive trucks were fun as well

I was wondering why they were saying suh-LEE-ka, and then it occurred to me: oh, they're Canadian.
The best thing about the Celica is that you could have a great style, full featured car that got 25MPG. You didn't have to drive a boxy, dull car to get good mileage. Too bad they didn't put the better engines in the US models. I got the 18R and 20R and they both suck without heavy mods. The 18RG is more about show because it didn't add a whole lot above what you'd get with some basic mods, and parts were very hard to get. Now, all the parts are hard to get.
stock 20r made 96hp where the 18rg made 145. Parts for the rg are getting marginally easier to find with new repro technologies but they are definitely not cheap. The higher revving rg is a joy to drive.
@@neilreid2529 The one RG that I drove wasn't very impressive. It was higher revving, but the regular 18R with good mods was right there with a stock RG. The main thing was that back in the day, the 18R had a pretty good selection of parts. I had 2 different cams, headers, Offy intake, Weber carb, compression, porting, ign, etc. Remove the smog and add a few things, and you're right there with the stock RG. Modifying an RG was very hard and it was still a 8 valve engine. Hard to raise the compression, cams, etc... The head design and carbs was cool, but you still need more. Only 1 RG made 145, others were like 125 and getting an R to 125 wasn't that hard.
Any recommendations for a mild upgrade to my 85 Supra?
I would like to get one and honesly it would not do anything to that car! the 5mge is a thing of beauty. I thought real hard about putting one in the celica

There's a whole bunch of discussion about this and the actual word Celica is Latin, meanwhile it may be Japanese car, it's awkward to hear cellica. It's ok either way.

@@bobbynochill Sorry for late reply. Wheels are 15X7 zero offset the rears do have 1" spacers to bring them out a bit. Tires are 195/50/15 sounds small but they sit well at that width for this car. Cheers!

@@bobbynochill Zero offset but as mentioned I have 1" adaptors on rears so a 15x7 minus 25 offset would be ideal. My wheels are from the 70's so adaptors were the only option. Frrots work fine as is at zero..

They're Canadian. Everyone outside of the USA pronounces it like this. Even the earliest American TV commercials for the Celica pronounced it this way.

That is because Russ is Canadian and that's the way it's pronounced there. Also in Japan, UK. and most other countries around the world. US is actually in the minority with it's pronunciation.
