    close to what I would have guessed, which was 700 (to750 - was a bit unsure) but didn't commented
    congrats to Catherine for winning this very nice coin !
    how low lays this old settlement where you got the beads from ? looks like relatively sandy soil but also still like a critically flat area - old dune, about 3 m above sea level ? living there in the pre-dike past, I would've tethered a boat right next to my door, just in case !

    • @Medieval_Digger
      @Medieval_Digger  Год назад +1

      I’ve found the beads on man made shelter hills which are called terpen (a terp). There were hundreds of these settlements here where I live in the Roman and medieval period. It must have been a wonderful place with all these tiny island here when the place flooded. Thanks! 😎👍🍀

      @@Medieval_Digger thank you ! I'm ca 5 miles away from the edge of the sea marshes and always interrested in how much risks they were willing to take
      already thought about the possibility of somewhat leveled Terpen, with the find layers conveniently being spread out, but the soil looks so sandy - our "Warften" are usually made of super heavy and flood resilient wadenzee slib.....but I guess you have to work with what's easily available and maybe that area was some old sandbank or ice age river sand deposit
      dunno if I can agree with the romantic aspect of being trapped there during storm tides
      I mean several times a year the Northsea rises significantly above normal and until late medieval times the normal, "single-property-Warft" was just about 2 meters above sea leavel
      every few decades when the Sea was really raging, I wouldn't have felt save even on top of the roof ridge (gettin "refreshed" there by ca additional 1-2 m of rough sea, together with my family, dog,cat,chickens, few rescue sheep, maybe some panicking wave battered cows&horses and more sheep clinging (in-)to the roof, desperately trying to get further up to the rest of the crowd, thereby threatening the whole weakened structure, etc...)
      boat ! definitely *boat* next to door ! as big as possible ! kinda Noah's Ark class ! better save than sorry !

    The into to your video was stunning. You found so many different objects but the ancient half-bead and the Roman coin from dated in the 100’s were incredible. We’re the ancients brooches used to secure clothing or were they crafted as a jewelry? Man I can’t get over how many incredible things are just below the surface. Fantastic video.

    • @Medieval_Digger
      @Medieval_Digger  Год назад +1

      Hi Lee, Thanks! The brooches were clothing fasteners and jewelry in one. They came in bronze, silver and even gold. And there are hundreds or even thousands different ones that can be found. 😎👍🍀

      @@Medieval_Digger Thank you so much. That’s fascinating. I had wondered why some were so simple in design and others were more decorative. Really enjoyed watching!

      Next to coins, brooches are the most common metal things to find from the ancient world. I always enjoy finding them, I wonder who made these, used these and lost them. 😁👍

    Great video, but you don't overlap your sweeps, you're gonna miss lots of targets.

    • @Medieval_Digger
      @Medieval_Digger  Год назад +1

      Thanks! Yes, I know I don’t overlap. You noticed that very good! 👍 When I’m walking on old settlements I walk slower. But on the old dump sites on the fields where I live I walk fast. I’m cherry picking. I have so many fields to search, I can’t search them all! But when I find a lot of silver on a field, then I’ll go there again the next year. 😎👍🍀 I really think overlapping is overrated, you cover the same ground twice, and yes you will miss stuff if you don’t do that. But you will cover more ground if you don’t overlap and so at the end of the day; you will find more! 🏆

    What are the laws like on finding coins / treasure in NL? do you have to report it to some government department like we do in the UK? What about finding stuff on public land like on say beaches ?

    • @Medieval_Digger
      @Medieval_Digger  Год назад +1

      Hi, Thanks! It’s almost the same as in the UK. Except things can’t be declared treasure. What we find is for the half of the value ours and the other half is for the landowner. But I haven’t sold anything, and most of the landowners don’t care about the money. If something that I found should be in a museum then I’ll make sure it gets there. I report everything that I find in PAN, our equivalent to PAS. And public land, like beaches? I have no idea, I don’t do that. 😄👍

    • @silverismoney
      @silverismoney Год назад +1

      @@Medieval_Digger ok yeah we're allowed to go metal detecting on the beach, but technically all beaches are owned by the crown so it's a shady/difficult process but from what I read most people just get to keep whatever it is. But sounds like NL is basically same as UK in this regard. Awesome videos btw. Keep it up.
