It's not entirely certain: the mask was used by any who wanted to ward off doubts. The Hornsent npc might have put it on after his family died to ward off any hesitations in his pursuit of revenge. It doesn't mean he was a potentate.

@@timtom2284They had it coming. The Hornsent had almost caused the extinction of the Shaman village except Marika and those who would become the Black Knives. Marika herself even knew the people of the Lands Between saw the Crusade as horrid actions which is why Messmer had everyone guide their hate towards him and eventually the the Land of Shadow was cast away. In the end the Hornsent had to face their past actions one way or another and I doubt something like the Nuremberg trials could happen in the Lands Between

I actually didn’t wanna summon the Hornsent. The Hornsent were assholes anyway, so killing Messmer by myself and denying them any revenge felt like a “no one was in the right, so I’m doing this for my own unrelated reasons” moment.

As much as I wanted to help him initially, Leda put it very well how him and his people were, which made me change my mind. None of them were saints, they just were on the losing side of a war. A war they started.
The Hornsent wasn’t a hero. None of his people were anything near. Their acts against Marika’s village and her people were actually quite evil. It’s their own folly that brought the Hornsent his suffering. Starting a war with a *god* wasn’t the wisest idea.

There are very few times when I support an eye for an eye. Finding out what the Hornsent did to the Shamen was one of those times, an entire culture based around using people as glue as a form of worship is something that requires exactly what Mesmer did

No one noticed the Hornsent (the character, not the race) design is reminicent of the Wormface enemies in the base game. The guys that puke out Deathblight. Which I thought was interesting.
Same with the Divine Dancing Lion clearly being a Grafted being like Godrick and the grafted Scions are. (Ive had people deny this, but like, its got at least 8 legs that I counted).

My assumption was that he’s a classic case of “civilian punished for the crimes of their government” like the vast majority of the random hornsent spirits we see. Him being a Potentate kinda ruins that, and it also ruins the whole “Cycle of violence” vibe.

As much as I don't support Marika's bloody crusade against the Hornsent, this is an example of reaping what one sown. That being said, I understand and sympathize with Hornsent's obsession with vengeance, losing a wife and child would surely push one to the edge, not only would he want Marika dead but that would be the only thing keeping him going, everything else is meaningless.
That being said, I will still gladly murk this bag of maggots everytime I play the DLC, I do not particularly like backstabbers nor edgelords, his drip is also pure dumpster fire and the less I have to look at it the better.

Basically the story is telling us revenge is pointless, genocide no matter what is not justifiable and that shit is never as straightforward as it seems. Kind of like in real life. Sure you can go back hundreds of years and find that all the that resentment originated from some where for some horrible thing that someone from either side did, like an invasion, killing a politician, discrimination, religion, who was king and who wasn’t. Everyone will air out dirty laundry to justify the murder of millions, and very rarely does one party involved have clean hands.
Basically his people used the people of the Shaman village as tools for their rituals and made most of them those jar things you see in the DLC, Marika avoided this fate and ended up climbing the tower to become a Goddess, and at somepoint during her empire had Messmer raise the place and nearly annihilate the hornsent culture in retribution for what happened to her.
This guy was upset about it because he lost so many of his people including his family and wanted revenge but Miquella promised him he'd usurp Marika if he served him so he did, and thus that's why he remains on on Miquella's side even when the ruin breaks. Though on some level he actually seems to understand that what his people did was wrong and that Miquella can redeem them. His quest can end in several ways though.
If you side with Leda he dies before he gets his revenge since Leda doesn't trust that he'll stay loyal.
If you side with him and summon him during the Messmer fight, he ends up taking revenge on the person who caused him the most pain but becomes obsessed with it, having a taste of revenge and finding it satisfying he throws away Miquella's offer of redemption and decides that he'd rather have more revenge and wants to kill everyone and everything associated with Marika, so he invades you later on as the next step in his one man crusade...which is where said crusade ends.
If you side with him but then don't summon him against Messmer he becomes distraught at losing out on his revenge. With no chance to pay Messmer back for the hell he put his people through he instead throws himself back into Miquella's cause, siding with Leda and helping her keep you away from Miquella hoping that when he becomes a god he'll redeem the Hornset.
No matter what though his journey ends in tragedy, he's too broken to ever see revenge as a bad thing and the only other person who can save him from his desire for revenge has broken themselves down too much tot be the savior he needs them to be.
Ah yes, won ton sin. When you dip your won tons in anything other than soy sauce or sweet n sour sauce.
