    The difference between this performance and all the others before the tournament is mainly due to attitude, if England can continue to play with this intensity they are a very tough team to beat however it remains to be seen if this is the standard going forward or a backs against the wall effort. I'm hopeful that this is the start of something but I can't just dismiss some of the stuff they produced in the lead up to the world cup, fingers crossed though.

    Limited attacking performance, by necessity (so the jury's still out there), but startling how clearly this shows the flaws in Borthwick's selections/strategy:
    - Ford only playing because Farrell is banned, and plays a blinder - what does Borthwick do now? Can't see him dropping Farrell, once available, but he should since Ford is a better 10 and plays better without Farrell at 12
    - Mitchell - wasn't even in Borthwick's squad initially
    Fitness where it needed to be - so credit to Aled Walters for timing that right; Itoje finally firing on all cylinders again; Earl & Tuilagi also immense
    Should clearly make the 1/4 finals now, but do they have the gameplan to progress any further??

    Wish England well but…..I watched the highlights and…..Ford kicks, Ford kicks, Ford kicks, Ford kicks, Ford kicks. If this is the New England strategy in action it will work, as it did against Argentina, if basically, the opposition does not turn up. Having shown the oppositions the only ace in the England hand, what do you do now? Hope you have some answers beyond, Ford kicks.

    • @brup.
      @brup. Год назад +2

      If you only watched the highlights you simply cannot get any sense of how the game unfolded. On a steaming hot evening when the ball was clearly like a bar of soap (hence the high error count from Argentina who failed to adapt) tactical kicking and taking 3 points every time they were on offer was exactly the right strategy. Ford's three drop goals punched the confidence right out of Argentina who started to chase the game and coughed up kickable penalties in the second half which Ford took full advantage of
      Couple that with an excellent defensive performance, holding their own at the set piece despite losing Curry to the red card (which again you wouldn;t see in the highlights) and suddenly England have the foundations they appeared to be lacking just a week ago.
      Playing phase play in those conditions whilst down to 14 men would have potentially resulted in both handling errors *and* fatigue amongst the forwards either or both of which would have risked Argentina coming back into the game. Whilst I'm concerned about a lack of out and out pace on the wings, in Mitchell, Care, Ford and Smith England have some of the best attacking nines and tens in the game and when the time is right I'd expect to see different tactics albeit I don't expect to see England trying to run it out of their own half much if at all!
      My biggest concern is what happens when Farrell is free to play because right now I wouldn't be picking him in the 23. He's not a centre and having him on the park shackles Ford or Smith at 10 as their not running the show themselves. We'll see on that but given where England were before the Argentina match I'll take that win and see what else they can cook up as the tournament goes on. Frankly, if they can kick their way to a world cup trophy I'[ll take it!

    • @brianseage5452
      @brianseage5452 Год назад

      @@brup. So I would have watched England being fairly good in defence and hopeless in attack. It was clear that Ford could not expect quick ball from the breakdown so had to stand back and drop kick and could not trust his centres or wings to put together a cogent attack so did not pass to them. Of course the team and the trainers hail this as excellent strategy on the night but it also highlights the total inability of England to penetrate any decent defence and (as we saw) score tries.
