I just bought the two cheapest Squier basses, the Mini P and the Bronco, and they came perfectly shielded (w/paint) and grounded from the factory. Totally quiet. Squier Indonesia's QC is great at the moment.

Super helpful as always! I just got my hands on a beautiful Vintera Jazzmaster in fantastic shape but had so much electromagnetic noise it was annoying to play. Turns out the prior owner had installed a new pickguard and didn't pay attention to where the wires were running so they were all literally directly under the neck pickup. After shielding the entire cavity (with COPPER foil tape lol) and making sure the wires sat in the route next to the neck pick up as opposed to directly under it it now sounds completely quiet to the extent that my amp makes the same amount of hum whether this guitar is plugged in or not. Such a huge improvement and thanks for the tips in the video - I wouldn't have been as careful about the wires without Mike pointing that out in this video!
Love to see that wiring job. I plan to put new electronics in and completely rewire my MIJ JM in the future and now I know what to strive for in my wiring.

For non colored wire, you can take a colored sharpie marker, hold it to an edge of the plain white wire, then pull the wire while maintaining contact with the marker until the whole length is marked. This creates a stripe that color codes the wire. Use multiple colors to differentiate. This method has been used by old amp builders to differentiate, so it does have an old school appeal.

I have a paetscaster jazzmaster with 3 pickups i builf about 4 years ago. I added the 3rd middle pickup about 2 years ago and all was well until recently. Its now super noisey like I have a grounding issue. I opened it up and its such a mess. Im tempted to rewire the whole harness just knowing i could do it so much better now. It was my first build, so ive learned a lot since then. If i am hoing to do that though, I may experiment with different pots in the rhythm circuit and maybe even put a tbx tone control in the lead circuit.

Shielded my heavily modified squier vm correctly with this video and the other (thank you). slowed down the video to watch the care of an artisanal master, offset connoisseur, and an artistic/unique player to boot. Wendy Eisenberg rules so so much. I've always wondered what pickups they use.
Also! I'd appreciate a video on adjusting spring tension in a Jazz/Jag vibrato system, with and without tremlock. There's hardly any information anywhere on how that spring adjustment screw affects the range, sensitivity and stability of the vibrato system and I bet you have a lot to say about it. Love the channel!

I just opened my '62, and OMG somebody was high - the wiring makes yours look sooo good. Ugh. A rewire is now on the table.
I screened my JM covers inside and connected that to earth.I was told it may knock some top off but I thought a JM can afford this.Its the quietist JM ive ever heard!
I would love to see a complete, long-form wiring tutorial some day!

my vintera came with wires under the pickup as well in-between two horizontal pieces of foam when I put jm-v and jm-fats in it i ran them besides the pickup in the space left underneath
My second electric was an ‘86 MIJ JM66- only $250 with a case - that I bought new in ‘87, instead of a bargain bin, beat-up, CAR, pre-CBS Model with a missing collet and a Mighty Mite neck (I also passed up an old Big Muff that would now be worth a lot more than the $40 they were asking). The main reason I didn’t get the Sixties Jazzmaster was that finding replacement parts at the time was nothing like today; Seymour Duncan had pickups but that was about it. Allparts didn’t have vibrato units till the Nineties.
The MIJ had weak, inaccurate pickups; the wiring was not completely to spec; the collet was not good and would not hold the vibrato arm, which was too straight and too short; and most importantly, and inexplicably, the back of the neck pocket had an inch-wide wedge chiseled out. Last year I updated the wiring and pickups and it’s better but not great.

Hey Mike, I just installed some Duncan Antiquities in my new Squier 40th Anniversary JM. Does it matter which orientation the pickups are in stalled in (wires coming out of left or right, looking down at them)? I noticed here you put them both in with the wires coming out on the right side of the pickups. Thanks!
Hi Mike, any advice for a Jazzmaster whammy bar that squeaks as it turns when being played in the Kevin Shields style, meaning as I strum the guitar I have the whammy bar in my palm, and it’s constantly moving up and down along with my hand. As the whammy bar moves up and down, it makes a squeaking sound. Any help would be appreciated.
So you don't send a ground wire under the pickups soldered to the shielding on the cavity? I wonder if that's what's making mine super noisy? Where do you then ground the pickguard to the cavity then?
Anyone know where I could find a sheet of that red tort material that Fender Japan used to use? Trying to find sheets of red tortoise shell with little to no yellow.

It's super nice to come across someone on guitar RUclips who'll respect someone's wishes when it comes to pronouns. I have a few friends who use they/them and some people are super shitty about it to them.
Dave, totally! I have friends of all stripes and that diversity makes the world a better place. Hell, it makes me better, and respecting pronouns is the simplest way to let someone know that they matter.
Noise is unlike a liquid, in that it won't make turns in order to seep through cracks in the shielding, so partial shielding CAN and often will help. That is, until you move around and the noise is in-line with the electronics, which can happen if it's a particularly half-assed partial shield. Even in a tube amp, which is extremely sensitive and high impedance, I've seen a small piece of metal used as a shield internally between preamp and power sections. No faraday cage, just an inch or 2 of steel.
Of course, the pickups themselves, sitting proud of the shield and being wide and, well, magnetic pickups, are the biggest noise picker-upper but yeah I'd say a full shield is worth it in a JM. Every bit counts.
A.question: how to ground the wire on the bushes?
Saw in some original usa jag diagrams the ground wire soldered on the tremolo unity, seems really more usable forn post mainteneance.

hey! Just to confirm. The back of the pick guard should also be completely covered in conductive tape? There's none on the back of mine. Also, should the inside of the pickup covers be covered in tape as well?

Hi Mike! Great videos! I just bought a used Jazzmaster and swapped out the pups for a Lollar P-90 and regular Jazzmaster. I'm getting tons of buzz when it's in the P-90 only or JM only position (it's fine in middle position). Do you do projects for customers like you're doing in this video?? I'd love to have this whole thing done to my guitar and would pay handily!! Just didn't know if you're available for that....please let me know. Thank you!!
I have one of these blonde gold bad boys , last year I took it apart, shielded throughout, swapped the pickups, staytremmed it to heck and it is just my favourite. I didn’t like the idea of the colour combo but in person it’s beautiful

Great video as always. Do you find that shielding the pickup cavities cuts any of the high end? A lot of people claim that it does. Not sure if there is any truth to that or not. Of course a lot of people claim the Earth is flat too.

Mike, great channel. Hours of fun and knowledge to soak up. How do you feel about adding treble bleed circuits to your guitars? As a beginner to modding guitars what would be your essential list of tools? Maybe an idea for two future vids! ;) Keep up the great work and your guitar playing is some of the best out there.
I sometimes do, it really depends on the guitar. Artoo used to have one but the particular network I used changed the volume sweep to be way too wide, but they can be great tools for the right situation. Thanks for the kind words!

great work. i opt for heat shrink over electrical tape as e-tape can get very gummy over time, but I agree that zip ties are not the way
This is precisely why I sought out specific kinds of e-tape. Some of the old leaded tapes really got gross, but most of what I've been getting from 3m seems to have held up well enough.

Paint can be fine, it's just harder to check while you're working. I usually stick with tape

I wish we lived closer. I bought Curtis Novac JM set that you recommended and have in Pancake. Id rather let an expert do it as Im not experienced rewiring pickups, pots etc. Id pay you to show me online if you could pickups and pots, recommendations haha. Love your work!

Hi there! I'm a big fan of Madison Cunningham. I love the sound she gets out of her Jazzmaster tuned to C standard. So I started thinking about making a baritone Jazzmaster using Warmoth for the body and neck. And I was wondering if you have any experience dealing with that tuning and what to look out for to make everything work smoothly.

Just follow the same setup procedures that you would with any other offset really, pitch the neck angle back and raise the bridge. I've set up a bunch of Jazzmasters as baritones within problems.

Also, I fought the hum for a while and went with a Novak JM-HC in the neck and it's transformed my relationship with the Jazzmaster all around.

Could you possibly do some content regarding the various tremolos.? Specifically is a MIM much different from a USA AVRI? And Also Possibly various neck profiles what people should look for depending upon their preference? I have a Squire JMJM and A MIM Vintera. Much different. But in a good way. Already upgraded Squire with USA Trem and tusq nut, Novak wide range, looking at doing similar to Vintera.
There is a huge difference between the vibratos you mentioned, I always just recommend upgrading from any of the imports to AVRI at the very least.
Did you ground the shielding? It might still be noisy bc I didn’t see it get connected to ground.
Shielding is automatically grounded when connected to the electronics via the shielding on the guard. There's no need to add wires or anything, that's why I left overhanging bits on the cavities.
Hi!
Im having grounding problems with my cij jaguar 66.
The main issue its hum at zero volume on lead circuit. The rythmn circuit has no hum at zero volume.
The cavities are grounded. When i touch the strings, trem, switches the hum disappears.
Any thoughts before send to a tech?
First thing I'd do is grab a multimeter and check my connections. Very likely that a solder joint is bad and needs to be reflowed. Check your grounds and pot terminals first!

Ah, was hoping this would have the stock Japanese pickups. I've been eyeing a 60s style CIJ JM (I have to see how I feel about pink paisley so will revisit in a month). Thoughts on the Japanese Jazzmaster pickups?
Some of the worst pickups ever made IMO. Dull, noisy, and they're not even really Jazzmaster pickups. I always, always recommend tossing them.
