Did you talk about your IBD in your personal statement for medical school? Is it a bad idea to bring it up in terms of what made you want to become a doctor?

I agree to an extent but you also need to acknowledge that you cannot only blame the individual. Maybe this applies well to students, but you brought up political issues at the beginning and kind of trivialized systemic oppression and racism to a "get your shit together" attitude that blames the individual for their misery rather than a system that's specifically designed to keep the poor poor and make the rich richer. Yes there are exceptions but they shouldn't be exceptions. It should be fair across all society's classes. And the gaps and privileges of the rich are undeniable. This maybe works on an emotional personal level but cannot be applied to a bigger picture that takes into account the politics involved.

I have this mindset, and it really takes time to develop. I developed this at a young age from a mentor, which did wonders for me. I truly believe that the greatest thing anyone can have is a great mentor. My mentor was a youtuber at the time, he stopped making videos but his teachings live within me till this day.
I really do believe you can be this mentor for the next generation, and I appreciate the time you take to open peoples mind to the greatest they have-their mindset

There were definitely many depressing times in my life but I am so glad I stayed positive throughout it all. Sometimes keeping that positivity is extremely difficult. But you have reminded once more why it’s important to keep moving forward. Time is not infinite and if i chose to move forward rather be positive than negative n think about how dreading the hardships are going to be which will do nothing for you.

Also the school I was attempting to get into wasn't as good as the school I'm in now, where I've met so many amazing people. Little detail: because the second school happens to be in my hometown I got the chance to continue playing ice hockey, which also led me to meet a lot of people. Absolutely no regrets.

Today, after a night full of intense anxiety, self-gaslighting, and endless crying because of having realized how much trouble I'm having with the current material in my general chemistry class the night before my third exam, and subsequently not doing great on the exam this morning (though still seeing it through till the end despite my difficulties), I re-watched this vid again along with the Dealing with Failure video. Today, though still a little sad, I'm calm, motivated, and know exactly what I'm going to do to plan out my path to overcome my individual struggles with the math and concepts, in order to get A's on my final two exams, and finally, an A in the class. Thank you so very much, Dr. J, for making these videos. My sanity and mental health through my difficult pathway to nursing and becoming a CRNA has been saved many times in very great part because of them.

I agree with this 100%. Our perception IS what determines our life situations. Happiness is our choice. There are blessings in adversity. I learned this at a young age and accepted it at the age of 22. I’m the daughter of an immigrant woman raised in LA with no hope or money to head to college; but alas I made it. My mother passed away when I was 22 leaving behind my then 5 and 8 year-old siblings that I inherited. I worked full-time and paid my last few semesters of undergrad. For a moment I had given up my dream to be a doctor... but here I am at age 27 (never too late) giving it another shot. Life isn’t fair but then again, who knows what is really good or bad? Thank you for the great videos, Dr. Jubbal! You’re doing a great job 👏🏽

Very clearly explained taking it from your own life.

As a current medical student, I think this would be an extremely pertinent lecture to be given before starting a difficult semester/Step 1- we are a smart bunch, but I think there is a real propensity for students to perpetuate a “poor me, this is so hard” attitude. Thanks for sharing!

Great video, I read The Obstacle is the Way and was fascinated by stoic philosophy. These are two of some short phrases I have as wallpaper in my phone as a constant reminder of how to approach studying (and life):
    Momentum follows action
Focus on the task at hand
