This is an excellent video. I have done a lot of woodwork & believe in the importance of sanding but this tutorial reinforces that & taught me a new trick of damp sanding. Thanks for sharing!
Yes, finally someone acknowledged the importance of sanding. It's not an easy task, nor is it fun to clean up, but it is necessary. Do not forget primer though, that is another key point.
he is mainly sanding to take the sheen of the paint to make sure the new coat sticks better but paints like oil undercoat will stick to it well enough without sanding.
Repainting inside my house, I initially used the popular chemical deglosser for trim. It took forever & I never could really see it take the "gloss off" which was its name. Using 220 grit is a million times quicker and you can tell easily when you are deglossed. The stff may be good for highly irregular surfaces but for trim like this 220 is way to go. Good video! Thanks
The whole advantage of using deglosser is that it eliminates the need for sanding. If used properly the deglosser should do it's job- taking off the sheen and letting new paint adhere to old.
I have 11 doors and door frames and 7 window Sills to do because the painters i hired didnt do this. They painted over oil based pain and now its just peeling off. Is there any way to do this with an electric sander or am i doing all this by hand??
It looks like he is not replying and I had the same question about which grit he used to sand the trim. Others say that they saw 220 on the back of the paper but that seems like a pretty high number for rough sanding. Anyone know for sure what # is good to start sading down old paint from trim?
@zoki kostadinov I had the most god awful honey oak cabinets. 63 of them. Yes 63. Had to sand them all and paint then a night neutral gray. Tedious but worth it
@darinbambrick3543 The difference between a craftsman and someone who just gets paid for doing a job, is the attention to detail with the desire and patience to implement it into his work. Also, teaching proper technique makes for a better how-to video, and a new subscriber!❤️ Thanks for the videos!
Fantastic video. I am going to start sanding this weekend. I have 5 rooms of skirting to do. Just had it newly plastered. Is it easy to get plaster off the skirting aswell? Thanks
2 more tips: 1. CLEAN any previously painted/finished surface BEFORE sanding. Otherwise you may be grinding dirt/grime into the old paint. 2. Hand sanding as in video is always good, but sanding sponges/pads are also good for lightly profiled mouldings- they can take the shape of the contours as they sand. Just be careful to not get too aggressive or burn-out can result as mentioned in the video.
Does anyone have suggestions for what to do when burn through occurrs? I needed to wtch this BEFORE starting my project!! Also the paint has been knicked clear off my trim in places so I think that would need similar treatment. Thanks!
This is a little late but there's nothing you can do but smooth out the area around the burn through as to make it even with the surrounding paint, then add a few extra coats to that area. We all do it from time to time and that about all you can do, unless you've cut into the wood too deep, then you'll need to put some wood putty in the area and sand it when it's dry to even it out.
TY for the vid. I need to sand my doors trims and repaint. The job made by builders was terrible. There are blotches of paint and particles, that look quite hard to sand by hand. I am going to try with a small electrical sander or else i will just go crazy and ruin my fingers. Not sure if it's a good idea but my moldings look much worse than the ones in this video.
Thank you for the video. I have really old baseboard and some part of the baseboard, the paint fades away. That it exposes the original wood. When I sand it down, do I have to remove all the paint on the part that hasn’t fade away to match the faded area? Thanks
No you don’t have to sand all of it away. You only need to dull down the sheen on the surface. Make sure that you sand at least 90% of the surface. Does that help?
Great video that molding is look paint already... do you sand it for paint the second coat ???... by the way after you apply the final coat you still sand the molding with high grid sand paper for best result ???
Does not matter if oil or latex. It depends upon the condition of the paint. If the surface is really bad because of heavy brush marks or because there are many coats of paint over bad conditions. Then wet sand with 150 grit. If it’s in really good condition then use 220 grit. If it’s in perfect condition, you still have to sand the surface to “open up” The surface so that your new paint can “grab” The surface and hold on to it permanently. If the surface is near perfect then sand with 320 or 400 grit. Always wipe clean the sanding residue that is left over from wet sanding. Hope that helps
@@marwanm8942 if the paint is still peeling easily its because the previous painter did not prep / sand either at all or they didn't prep / sand properly. so all loose peeling paint has to be peeled off first. then properly sand the trim
It depends on what you're sanding. If it's previously stained, you do need to prime it. However, if it's previously painted, no need to prime, but still need to apply two finish coats. What other information would you like to see on this channel?
@@rbbc916 What about sanding a whole door, mine are flat and I have an electric sander but no dust removal system, am worried about breathing it in as I can't use water near electricity, but will be super fast though!
Well, it’s difficult to know what he has actually done. Hopefully he sanded. If he has not sanded the paint might come off when you sand it. However, you now know the best way to sand it. Please watch my other videos that should help.
Is this method good for doors as well? I need to paint my doors and trim, they are already painted if I can save money by just sanding and not having to apply an undercoat that would be great. The paint will be darker than what is already on there
It works, but not very well. You won't get a feathered edge into the existing wall finish. Rather, you will end up with a ridge around your patched area, which will eventually show up in your finish coat.
Sorry for the delay. There is a technique for plaster/ dry wall repairs. I like to use durabond brown bag product. It's a harder finish and is more durable. However, it is a little more difficult to sand. What other content would interest you on this channel?
Problem that might arise is the difference in shade, I touched up my radiators with spot touching and you can see every one. Depends how long before you did it and if its the same shade, why not try a bit that's out of eye line, preferably out of the way
Some lazy animal painted the doors and frames so badly that they have paint runs, dirt balls stuck in paint and marks all over the surface. They painted OVER the trim and locks and everything as well. Just absolute scum. I'm thinking of smoothing the surface by wet sanding with finer grit sand paper instead of an entire repaint. Then I'm just going to touch up any areas I go through to the wood with sandpaper with some light paint and polish the doors with automotive polish. Let's see...
Top tip about damping down to control dust. Thank you.
Oh man, just think your advice in the US could save my day in Norway. What an impact you just made.
Thank you very much!!!
It has helped me for many years!! That’s pretty cool… all the way from Norway!! Have a great day!!
Had no idea about wet sanding. Makes total sense on semi gloss surfaces

It works for exfoliating feet too.
Wet sanding is for woodwork that has a finish on it. Wet sanding does not work on bare wood
I have watched like 50 videos and FINALLY found exactly what I was looking for.
Thank you! Wet sanding I have never thought of before for wood trim. I am sanding (and caulking/repairing) old 1965 door trim.
Thanks Debbie. I hope your projects go much easier and smoother with better results in the future

Great. Straight forward and clear.
What if the old layers of different paints peel off and expose the wood??
Then u need to prime
Great video. Thank you for such a clear explanation.
If you burn through the wood, do you just spot prime that area - or do you need to use wood putty?
That trim looked like it was fine to begin with!
If my trim looks like that once I've finished I'll be very happy.

Saw 220 on the back

No need to sand if you paint within the next 24-48 hours. Not necessary unless you have debri in first. Only need to sand where debri is located.

Is de glosser required after sanding stained surface or is it replacement for sanding stained wood?

No. I use #220 grit. I buy from Home Depot because their sand paper has a wax back for the water doesn’t destroy it

You’re only scuffing the surface. You just want to take the sheen down or smooth out anything in the paint surface
