This port was such a downgrade. If you're on PC, you can try out the Sigma 2 Black Mod which makes the experience much closer and in some cases harder than the original 2. 12:00 Also, if I'm not wrong the purple wounds weren't because of censoring nor handholding purposes, it was because the PS3 (what the port was based on originally) couldn't handle the polygon and vertex count that the original had, hence the reduced enemy count and purple wounds.
When I come back around to do the Master Ninja play through I'll install the black mod. It still feels like the smoke is there to let the player know "you can execute this enemy their limb is missing but I can see it being used to hide a simplified gore model. Definitely was disappointed by the final staircase at the end not having 200 ninjas slowing down the game on it but I have to re-record that run.
