My mom broke or rather shattered her left femur right above the knee. Shattered into 25 pieces. It’s was an open fracture. Did emergency surgery. Put in two plates and lots of screws. This was during Covid also. I was with her in the er so I was the only one that could stay with her. She stayed 10 days in the hospital and another four months in rehab. No one in our family could visit her there. She is so strong. This was 4 months after my dad had died, they had been married 63 years!! We really didn’t think she would walk again! But, she surprised us all….did I mention she was 81 at the time ?? So proud of her
That's amazing! Was that in the UK? I was just asking because I've had some pretty heavy duty surgeries for myself however in the USA, they throw you out as soon as possible, like as soon as you have a BM after major surgery!! And then maybe you get home health care for an hour once or twice a week for maybe a month or two....
Life can be so cruel, I had an abusive mother and father father died alone, mother is still alive I have not spoken to her in 25 years. Your mother was probably a wonderful woman, may she rest in eternal peace.

I am so sorry that Allison passed away. She fought hard. Metastatic cancer is really hard to fight. My sister died in 1997 of breast cancer that metastasized to her lungs. She too fought hard. She had it for 4 years. She was 37 & had a 7 year old daughter. RIP Allison.
I felt very badly for Iris. A lovely woman. My Dad was the same age when he fell and required surgery. He was hospitalized for three months. He was independent before that. It all changed after that. I was his caregiver for over 8 years. He was the best. Alison's story was very sad. An excellent episode.
My brother had Splenic marginal zone lymphoma and went through the treatment and was in remission, roll forward to last year and it's back but they also found a different cancer in his lung and he never smoked. They removed part of his lung and it was successful. His SMZL is not bad enough to have treatment yet, even though his lymph nodes light up like a Christmas tree.
Oh Claude, my heart breaks for you. Remember the precious times you had together and how fate finally brought you both together eventually. A relationship definitely meant to be x ❤. Rest in peace beautiful Alison 😢 I was shocked and scared when you said of her constant coughing and diagnosed with lung cancer despite her being a non smoker. You have me thinking, thank you x Fantastic news that Iris survived the dangerous for her, surgery. Well done, you are a fighter x
Allison died the same year as my Mom. My Mom also died of cancer in her brain, secondary to ovarian cancer which had also gone to her lungs. She was also on hospice at home when she died. Tears.
Allison was just like my dad. His started in his lung. By the time it was found, it had already spread to his brain. He had three tumors in his brain. He died 8 months later after chemo and radiation.
You don't need the stress that comes from an unsupportive family. You need to be protecting your peace now more than ever. Focus on your physical and mental health. I've ended my relationship with my sister and her entire family. Love yourself first.❤
The compassion of the medical staff when they realised that wonderful old lady had broken both femura and was unlikely to recover. The NHS at it's best. On the other hand the guy who put his finger in a meat grinder and TURN IT ON!! and then freak at what was a minor injury. We'll never survive another war!!
(Prelude: we’re Canadian.) My Mum broke her femur right above her kneecap. She waited four days for surgery, was on morphine the entire time. They fixed it with plates and screws. She was sent to a rehab hospital and was there for four months (when her allotted rehab time was up). Her femur did not heal at all. She broke it in May, she came home end of September. She had a second surgery in January and they inserted a rod). After eight months she could finally stand WITHOUT broken femur pain. Moral? If anyone you know breaks their femur DEMAND A ROD.
What province are you in that they didn't stick in a rod? I know quite a few people here in BC who had breaks in various parts of their bodies, my granddaughter for one when she broke the humerus in her arm. All had a titanium rod put in and healed well.
I lost my dad 6/30/2004. He had Caplan’s Syndrome. He suffered for two long years. I smelled his hands on my hands for over a year because I was holding his hand when he passed.
Once I started watching the BBC’s Call The Midwife and seeing how the poor lived in the Eastside of London 1955 and into the early 60s I took a big interest and started looking things up. One day I was talking to my dad‘s cousin, my second cousin, and I was told by him about living in the Gorbals in Glasgow. It was exactly as the show depicted. I can see the reason why my dad always wanted us to have the best that he could afford on his jobs wages. Then I looked up pictures of where he was raised, and it infuriated me. I know it was better than being out in the elements, especially in the winter, but to have one toilet for whole apartment block I just felt more, much more could’ve been done. Edited: You’re so right. We have no idea what it was like to be them and we are so spoiled. Even though I’ve never owned my own property I live in a house now that has three bathrooms in it. That’s luxury that we take for granted.
Lost my mum March the 11th 2023. Just three months after the diagnosis. She didn't have the chance to have any treatment at all. Her brain tumor was taken out but the tests were inconclusive and all we knew was definitely metastatic. She went downhill end of February and early March again and she fell into a some kind of coma a week before she passed away. She was 60.

People need to take responsibility for their weight. I know it sounds judgmental, but obesity leads to all kinds of disasters: digestive problems, sleep apnea, joint problems requiring expensive replacement operations, Type 2 diabetes and its horrendous and very expensive consequences (e.g. kidney dialysis), cardiovascular diseases (high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, various cancers, and worse Covid outcomes. ALL the world's health-care systems are warning that they're already overwhelmed and won't be able to cope with these consequences in the future, and it's not fair on people who suffer from conditions they didn't bring upon themselves when they have to wait in a queue behind people who could have avoided their ill health.
There are not enough doctors MAKING their patients accountable for their weight issues. Get tough with your patients - they will thank you in the long run.
