I have to tell you I love trains. Even though I am blind I wish I had the vision to drive one of those locomotives. I pray that I get to ride on one at some point. My favorite company is CSX. But the bright side to all of this is I am going to be a ham radio operator. And my sister lives right across from the track so I get to listen to the train traffic. God bless these engineers.

I’m a conductor for a class 1. I can tell y’all you can’t simply like trains then work for a railroad. When I got hired on I really never thought about trains. If you say you like trains they will be leery to hire you. Those that do will go nuts when your phone rings on rest, when your in a hotel and can’t sleep, when you walk a train at night in the rain because a facility left a brake tied. However it’s a great job, you become family to your co-workers.

I guess nowadays we can’t see videos like this until guys are retired! So many videos had to be taken down in the early days of RUclips.
We run GE locomotives like this on the iron ore trains in Australia. They import them from USA. They go from 35,000 tons to over 42,000 tons gross weight! I have a neighbor who is an engineer (train driver) for BHP and they had to force derail a 42,500 ton train last year because of the new ECP brake system. Cost them millions.

I retired in 2016 after 41 years of railroading 36 years as engineer. Its a good job but you will miss a lot of family stuff. And never mind other things like crossing accidents and suicide by train, you have to have your mind right. Thing is if you are doing your job right, blowing the horn, running the right speed, it keeps the ghost off the bed post.

Very good questions ...In short you got to know your sh**. Learning your territory, the wayside and the grade (road) crossings is evidence of what level you are at in your skills. The old heads often bragged about knowing where they were at within 3 seconds even if someone blind folded them and delivered them to a particular spot along the RR day or night. During my 38 year career I can testify to that.
