The hyena is using Xander's memories to attack Buffy, so it comes off as sexual assualt. If the hyena attacked without possessing anyone it would be a standard hyena attack, while Xander wouldn't sexually assualt Buffy (but he does have a high school crush on her); combining Xander's crush with the hyena attacking creates an issue that wouldn't have happened otherwise. It's a horrible moment (not because of Xander or the hyena) because of Xander _and_ the hyena combined; with the hyena having Xander's memories. Hope that made sense.

The show gets a bit dark here with the principal getting eaten, proving Buffy is not just a kid's show.

I think what Willow sees in Zander a boy who she is comfortable enough with to be friends, which for Willow is 90% of the crush need.

I first watched this show in the mid-naughts and this episode stuck with me. The decade before watch 2, it returned to me more often than most, even more plot twisting. It sings to real life so much.
    Annointed.

NGL the gym coach is literally ME when dodgeball is in play. No mercy. ALSO this episode is hyena slander BC REAL HYENAS LAUGH WHEN THEY'RE SCARED OR NERVOUS. I love them. They're good bois.

1:24 'Anointed One' not 'Appointed One', but an easy mistake to make, especially as we don't see any actual anointing. He was one of the passengers on the bus.

As hyenas, like these, mostly live in African savannahs and grassland (although in the East they are found in jungles, too) scavenging dead carcasses and grabbing other predators' kills in formidable packs, the music is most likely made of sounds of the hot, dusty, arid African deserts and mountains. They steer clear of male lions that will attack any lone hyenas, but will rush a female lioness, though. The writers got a good part of the lore right. In Buffy, they use the many threats and demanding situations as a metaphor for their teenage high-school life, relationships and growing pains.

"It's a very funny show..." then bullying, animal cruelty, murder, cannibalism and attempted sexual assault.
    It's a hilarious show...when it's not horrific and tragic.

  • @Buffy8Fan

This episode was a great overall metaphor of high school bullying.
    RIP Flutie!!!
Eion Bailey as Kyle DuFours (one of the pack) in his first professional acting role ever. He eventually becomes known for playing August Booth on _Once Upon a Time._
The look Willow gives Xander after he gets her out in dodgeball is odd to me, as in that situation it's justifiable to try and get people out for the purposes of the game. I don't consider the Scoobies pulling a "Scully" and ignore that moment wrong, if they had done that. It isn't until Willow asks Xander what's wrong with him that you could even start arguing anything truly wrong with Xander, and not until the pig is eaten that any proof is shown outside of Giles' explanation of "teenage boy," even if you know something is off.
Early on, the writers said they realized putting Willow in danger meant the stakes were higher because they knew the audience liked her. It also fit well because of how naïve her character is.

    • @ernesthakey3396
      @ernesthakey3396 3 дня назад +3

I think Willow gave Xander a look because it is likely they have played dodgeball before and as her friend he's never targeted her, so this was another behavior change. That's speculation on my part but I think it makes sense. Also, he threw the ball pretty hard.

A good head canon. But that's also the point. It doesn't really prove he's going through anything other than being "a sixteen year old boy." Giles was right about that. Even Buffy thinking Xander's change in friends is slayer related isn't really anything different than what Riley was doing in _Inside Out 2_ on it's surface. Eating the pig was the first real clue anything slayer related was going on with Xander.
People talk about this episode (including me) like its metaphor is about bullying, but I also think puberty is a metaphor it tackles as a secondary metaphor.

Mostly Buffy is a teen drama, with the real trials of growing up represented as monsters. Some episodes it's more blatant than others. Teen dramas often have some comedy, perhaps Buffy has more then most, but it has darker elements as well.
Xander himself has been a victim of bullying, I don't think he'd find the bullying funny. Bullied kids often become bullies, but not because they find it funny.

The first season is my second favourite season; find it a bit upsetting that people are so down on it. Everybody loves Willow; apparently I'm not everybody... Not really much more I can comment on that for quite some time because... spoilers. This is my second favourite first season ep; though I do agree, for once, with the activists because, despite their reputation Hyenas are at the top of the parenting tree; unlike the 'cute and willow-y' meerkats who are the worst; actually even more murderous to their own kind than Human Beings and even Dolphins. I can't remember how long after this aired that I wrote it, but I wrote a fanfic about one of the possessed twenty-som *oops sorry* teenagers in this episode; long time before I could show you that one though. The gym teacher sometimes causes flashbacks; exactly the kind of teacher who was actually worse than the bullies I had to endure. I do sometimes wish the possessed kids had eaten him as well as Herbert the Ba... Pig & Principal Flutie, or instead of (well maybe not Herbert, who is making me feel hungry watching this at just past 2am :-) kerk

16:36 xander has a crush on buffy and not willow. that's the truth. what possessed xander said was just that in the most hurtful nasty embellished way possible. so the truth is completely innocuous but when stated evilly it sounds awful. so you're right but i think it's not bad as you make it seem there.

The only goobers who think that the first season is not reprsentative of the show don’t grasp two things. First, as with a novel, the early chapters of Buffy are essential to build up the story. But then they mistake comic books and comic book movies for literature, which they are not. They are sketches for the masses. Buffy, in other words, like a novel unfolds and what comes before unfolds into what comes after. Duh.. Second, they don’t grasp-and this is a pretty impressive example of amnesia run amok-that tonally the first season of the show is just like later seasons. All seasons of Buffy are full of comedy, dark comedy, tragedy, satire, parody, drama, melodrama.
Why picking on the one kid? Uh, you do know that lions, for example, choose the weakest of wildebeast, for instance, for a kill. Why? Uh, because it is easy. Speaking of you knows, every episode of Buffy plays with metaphors, which, along with character and story arcs tie the series together. And the metaphor in this episode is perhaps that like the wild beast humans too go after the weak and vulnerable in high school and in life. See bullying. See rape and rapists.
I lived in Canada. I was never taught that running from bears in Alberta and BC was a good idea. In fact, running from beats of prey is not really a good idea since humans can’t outrun most of them. But hey, whatever floats...
Finally, love the inappropriate literalism. But hey, fundamentalism is a general human trait isn’t it? Interesting.

Flutie went out way too early. An interesting episode mirroring gang culture and pressure that comes with it. One of the best episodes of S1 but stick with it this show just matures into an incredible show in later series.

Xander sucks approximately 90% of the time. I actually prefer that this predator version of him is straight up about it.
