    I recently met a guy with a super nice frame, rocking an old school lined bifocal. No problems here to start, but he mentioned having trouble with glare, but I could see the hint of an AR Coating on the front of the lenses... it only went south from there. Watch the video for details!
    The take away here, if an anti reflective coating is "cheap" there's a reason for it. The machines to make quality AR coatings are incredibly expensive to purchase, and take up a large chunk of space, not to mention the knowledge required to operate them. Quality anti reflective coating and cheap, are rarely, if ever synonymous.
    For more information on anti reflective coatings in general, this blog specifically will help enlighten you further!

    • @ThatGlassesGuy03

      Odds are you have a "blue blocking coating" which is actually a mirror coating. Or the costing you have has already failed/defective from the factory. Alternatively, you have some uncorrected astigmatism or are experiencing night myopia. These last two wouldn't typically present as "increased glare" though :)

  • @fundifferent1

    Yeah....I just got the AR on Zenni glasses for Zoom and disappointed that you can still see reflections on them. I had gotten AR on cheap frames a long time ago and they scratched off in just a few days and I had to have them take it off. I thought these would be different.

    • @ThatGlassesGuy03
      @ThatGlassesGuy03  2 года назад

      The Zenni is rather bottom of the barrel in terms of AR, From memory they're still over a 4% reflection (which, notably, is higher reflectance than uncoated glass). I wouldn't judge modern AR coatings too harshly based on theirs, as it's also a spin coat AR (the most failure prone).

      In the long term it's less than ideal as it does wear on the coatings faster. Yes you can use it... but as a daily cleaner, I wouldn't. Typically not. Many ar coatings fail over time and come with complaints of increased glare as glasses age, so no surprises there. The highest quality coatings can last for a decade easily, especially on a good substrate like cr39, glass, hivex, or 1.60 materials 🙂

    • @ThatGlassesGuy03
      @ThatGlassesGuy03  3 года назад +1

      Ahhhh this is an entirely different phenomenon! I've rarely met another optician that properly explains these coatings as what they are. Zeiss drivesafe is a well designed coating *for its purpose, and that purpose alone. Night time FLARE.. often described as glare incorrectly. The short version is... that purple dot you're seeing is exactly that... the purple/blue spectrum of the led partially reflecting off of the front surface (read front side wavelength tuned mirror coating... this is quite literally a carefully selected low reflectance mirror coating designed to reflect away a small percentage of the nuisance spectrum that causes flare (perceived by the masses to be glare). So, yes.. ive seen what you're referring to. Also a property of any and all blue blocking "tech" coatings. Simply a low reflectance mirror tuned to a specific wavelength of light. Largely ineffective and a nuisance. Zeiss blueprotect, Hoya recharge, essilor crizal prevencia et.al. smaller brands such as retinal bliss DES etc etc etc. You are seeing exactly what you think you are. The lens creating the glare you were hoping to eliminate. 😳

      Ammonium solves the AR coat but shouldn't affect the polycarbonate plastic of the lens. I've had great success with a product called "Armour Etch" which contains ammonium. I've given new life to three pairs of glasses so far. Two of them turned out good as new, third pair turned out alright but not perfect (the AR coat was heavily scratched). 🤣 you must be a hyperope with minimal if any cylinder correction. And if that's true, absolutely AR is not at all necessary for you. However, that's a very slim part of the population. I quite regularly advise low powerd hyperopes with no cylinder AR is not necessary if cost is a factor. Personally as a moderate myope with an eye for details, it's a huge difference, and the more power and the higher index the lens the more and more of a factor it becomes. For Crown glass in any RX it's not really necessary either due to the way light passes through crystal glass :) There are factors for sure, BUT, for the vast majority of people out there today with some astigmatism and/or myopia, it's definitely advantageous.
      Blue blocking AR coatings... those.. that is milking the customer and entirely unethically IMO.. but that's another story :)
      Alos just worth mentioning, due to the range of coatings out there today, some are indeed even worse than an uncoated lens when it comes to plastics.
