    So much has changed, but the best way to do IMO is buy the hard 4k disk and use the digital code that most come with,. Then you have the physical copy and a digital one you didn’t pay for with another transaction. My only complaint is Apple does not seem to let you store things on an external drive anymore so you have to use the Apple Cloud to watch and I dislike their interface. I don’t know about everyone else but I like my movies to start from the beginning each time.

    Excellent video. You schooled me a bit on Apple movies. I didn't know about the upgrades and the use of iTunes. I forgot all about iTunes when one of the oS upgrades back in the day removed it from our MacBooks. Lately I have been struggling with which route to go. I have almost 2,000 movies on my circa 14' HTPC running PLEX and gave some thought to upgrading to more modern specs so I could start putting 4k movies into my PLEX library. However, I read over on the AVS forums that some people were running into issues with copyright when ripping a 1:1 UHD. Reminds me of the 1080 days to be honest with you. So, then I thought about purchasing physical media again along with a Panasonic player to get the best possible picture and sound. I know housing a bunch of physical movies will get old again pretty quick - even if some of the steelbook art is awesome. I thought about Kaleidescape but I don't like the ideal of spending so much money to get started plus not having the ability to merge my already large collection. I get why, but it's a bummer. We have about 10 (sad, I know) Apple 4K titles, so perhaps I could start growing there but now that were adding atmos into our theater I wanted to take advantage of the best pq and sq that only physical media (or the Kaleidescape) can bring. But the question is, will I even notice the difference? Shane over at sparechange seems to boast about the differences. At the end of the day I prefer the UI such as what PLEX, Kaleidescape, Apple, and others offer. It's nice having your movies all in once location. Streaming has spoiled us in that regard. Since you have a Kaleidescape what differences do you notice between it and Apple? Is the PQ and SQ really that noticeable? Do you see yourself purchasing movies on both or mainly sticking to Apple? Thanks - Judd

      This is such a huge topic for me and something I debate and swing back and forth on all the time. In my experience, the difference from watching movies on Apple iTunes to K or disc has really diminished, especially on the video side. If I sat you in my room, true blind volume-matched test, I bet you'd fail an A/B between iTunes and disc/K. I bet I would as well.
      That said, we spend all this money on our rooms and gear and I agree with the idea of wanting to feed it the highest quality source content available, which is disc or K. Both have their pros and cons there too. K wins so much on convenience, ease of use, access, and elegance. It's just really expensive, but if you have the money, who cares.
      I try to convince myself all the time to shed replicate solutions for thing. Simplify life. Try to be minimalist focused. It's not always easy. Right now, I'm still building an iTunes library and a K library (I just bought the entire 25 Bond film bundle last week on K) and even still ripping a bit. One the one hand, I really dislike collecting the same movies twice and having redundant devices and knowing it's kind of wastefully spending, but on the other hand, I can afford to do it. Being able to afford something though, still doesn't make it necessary smart.
      Ripping stuff really sucks, to me, quite honestly. It's a time sink. Something you have to manage. Has so many risk factors and pitfalls and shortcomings. All it takes is another copy protection revision and maybe ripping dead ends. And I doubt we see another physical media format after 4k discs, meanwhile internet-delivered content should advance.
      I've started a video a couple times on this topic, but it's hard to talk on it and not ramble too much, so I haven't figured out how to tackle it. Maybe a live stream where I could dialog and go down a few roads of thought would be the best format.
      If you have the discs you ripped and were considering K, you could hopefully get access to a D2D plan in their store, but you'd have to work with a dealer to do it.

    Great video. I am a disc buyer, but I'm not foolish and won't buy any digital I ( I used my codes myself as well ). Many titles have never went to Blu Ray but are available in 1080p via streaming. I initially started with iTunes several years back, and then switched to Vudu because they were the first to really get into 4K, plus they would initially redeem a lot of TV shows as well with digital codes, also they have an upgrade path from 1080p to 4k. However, I went back to full iTunes when the last generation Apple 4K TV came out ( Since then I have upgraded to the latest Gen). iTunes has by far the greatest sales going on their content, and I too wait and buy the expensive stuff when it goes on sale, and you usually do not have to wait long. Plus they have the best quality. Thank you for your iTunes upgrade tip, that's something I did not know. 😄 As before, I mentioned that I buy Disc's. I've been ripping my discs for approximately 14 years. I think I started with a Pop Corn Hour, then went to Plex when nobody really knew who they were, and now still use Plex, but I have a newer Zappiti Neo as well. Never went the Kaleidescape route, but have watched them for years. Great videos thanks!

  • @pgreen0001

    Great video again. IMO if you are only buying digital media then I agree that buying directly from the iTunes Store is the way to go. I currently have 1853 digital movies in my library and some of them are duals exactly for that reason the original Scream comes to mind that I just rebought. I find most of the time the one I’m rebuying didn’t come with iTunes Extras and the new one does plus the bump in video and/or audio upgrade.
    Now I still buy disc and whether the digital code is from Movies Anywhere or directly from the Studio is movie dependent. I would estimate at least half if not a little bit more of the types of movies I buy on disc the code works directly in the iTunes Store so it’s seen as an iTunes purchase so I receive any upgrade Apple does for that particular movie. Now sometimes a movie will get a 4k upgrade and I will get just that and sometimes if it’s a full blown upgrade with iTunes extra I will get that as well but it seems to depend as you said where I got the code from. Whether is was UV or Movies Anywhere which can be connected to multiple accounts like your Prime Video or Vudu account if you bought movies there.
    As far as upgrading I’ve never used the gifting method. As I most use the Apple TV to rebuy movies that have been upgraded that aren’t automatically upgraded I typically only have to do a search on the iTunes Store in the app and the only copy that shows up is the iTunes copy that I don’t have current rights to and I can buy that. For example when the new version of the original Scream came out I thought I already owned it so I looked in my purchase snd sure enough it was there but in HD but in the store it showed the new version in Dolby Vision/ATMOS and of course I don’t own that version and it just let me buy it. I didn’t have the play icon like you showed so maybe that is just a feature of using the iTunes Store on your computer or phone.
    My biggest issue it with the library itself and not having the ability to edit the Genre when it is missed labeled. I have some sci-fi movies categorized as Action/Adventure and vice versa. I would love that fixed.
    I have no doubt in my mind that we will eventually get lossless audio and though the Bitrate will never be as high as physical media or Kaleidscape I think for 99 percent of the people it will be good enough. And while I support Kaleidscape’s existence and the movie wall is cool, IMO it doesn’t bring real value. Genre separation on iTunes is basically the same thing without all the flashiness. Portability alone makes me choose that over Kaleidscape.
    Anyways another great video and keep them coming!

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for sharing and the compliments! On thing that burned me specifically is the codes that ported into my iTunes were HD codes. Then that movie was upgraded to 4k in the iTunes store. In that case, Apple doesn't give you the 4k upgrade. That's where you have to rebuy the same movie and the gifting trick is needed to be able to buy it. I fear the same thing might happen again later one for 4k right ported in if we get 8k or high bit rate 4k. You won't get that upgrade later on 4k ported in rights. We will see. I agree and believe Apple will continue to push quality/bit rates and such in time. They are already doing with music. Movies shouldn't be far behind.

      @@Techthusiasm that’s weird. Because most of the codes I have for just Blu-ray Disc were upgraded to 4k if they were redeemed on iTunes as opposed to UV or Movies anywhere. • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  2 года назад +2

      Oh, sorry, I see what you mean. There are really two kinds of codes or ported rights. There a codes from some studios that were/are redeemed directly in iTunes itself. And there are codes now from most studios that are redeemed in Movies Anywhere and/or ported into iTunes through MA.
      Codes redeemed directly with iTunes are "safe". They function like a direct iTunes purchase. Ported rights coming into iTunes through MA are not. Good distinction. I kind of missed that nuance in my video. Maybe a good follow-up topic.
      As it is, most codes now are not redeemed with iTunes directly any more. Most have to go through MA for redemption and then port.

      You can’t download movies really any more with Apple or iTunes. You would need a Kaleidescape for that. But you still would want somewhat fast internet for it.

    I bought the Mario movie at the store with a HD code through movies anywhere. Imported the movie to my Apple library and then realized that Apple had a 4k version on their digital store. However, I wasn’t able to buy the 4k version bc I already have the HD version. How can I buy the 4k version from Apple?

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  6 месяцев назад

      Gift it to yourself is the work-around to this problem that you have to do. Did I talk about that topic in this video? It is dumb that we have to do that, but it works. Buy the movie as a gift and just have it email you the code. Then redeem that code yourself in iTunes. You'll get the 4K version now in your library as a proper purchase which overwrites the ported MA code.

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  2 года назад +2

      Well, per my other comments, I fear later on when 8k comes or whatever the next step is if you had bought the 4k movie directly with Apple then you'll get that future upgrade. If you ported in a 4k movie right through MA, you're probably not getting that future upgrade. The HD to 4k upgrade issue/rebuy will happen all over again. I am hedging my bet for the future and not buying HD nor 4k codes.

      In rare cases something could be delisted and removed from your account. This is incredibly rare. If something is delisted for sale from the store and you already own it, you would continue to be able to access your purchase.

  • @Spazza42

    Torrenting seems like an obvious choice for people wanting digital libraries but you can't stream any of it. Buying through iTunes at least gives you:
    1. A way of streaming the content you bought without having to download it.
    2. You can download if you want to for offline viewing.
    3. You get the upgrades if you bought through Apple.
    4. It syncs with more than 1 device. iPhone, iPad or AppleTV? It just doesn't matter.
    I have no objection paying for content as I'll happily support the industry. The biggest downside is it's simply one step closer to not owning shit, at least you can decide what to do with an old DVD/Bluray if you don't want it or it stops working.
